sputnik
On the Howard Stern show yesterday, theyplayed some "Led Zeppelin" songs that were apparently ripped off from bands way beforeZeppelin that werenever given credit. It was the sixties and seventies, so maybe they just spaced out where the songs came from. Or, does someone have an ax to grind? Here's an example: http://www.classicrockcentral.com/more_classic_rock.cfm I can't say that I have any more than an average interest in Led Zeppelin. Is this a big deal for you fanatics? From the Howard Stern web site: "Denny Somach came in to talk about how LedZeppelin borrowed practically every note of their first record fromother artists. Denny said he was the world's leading expert in classicrock and accused Led Zeppelin of using other people's songs. Dennysaid Zeppelin stole from a Joan Baez version of Ann Breeden's Babe I'mGonna Leave You, for their own song also titled Baby I'm Gonna LeaveYou. Howard played both songs and agreed it was a dead rip-off.Howard then played a song by Jake Holmes called Dazed and Confusedthat was identical to Zeppelin's version. Jake opened for the Yardbirdswhen Jimmy Page was in the band, and that's where music historiansclaim Jimmy first heard the song.Howard also compared clips ofBurt Blanche's Black Water Side and Zeppelin's Black Mountain Side, and the riffs were the same. Howard then played Eddie Cochrane'sNervous Breakdown and Zeppelin's Communication Breakdown, whichwere shockingly similar. Denny then asked Howard to play a Spirit song, and everyone immediately recognized the riff from Stairway to Heaven.Denny then handed Howard his ticketstub from a Led Zeppelin concertfrom 30 years ago that they both had attended. Denny said Howard hasn'tchanged much in 30 years, as he even left the Zeppelin concert early.Howard admitted that he left early, saying he only did so becausepeople were setting off M80s in the theater." charlieboy
Happens all the time. What's ironic is Zep has the nerve to sue their record company for royalties on songs they should be paying royalties as well.
