Marine grade Plywood advice needed

Recommended Posts

I just acquired three 4'x10' 3/4" sheets of very beautiful Teak Marine grade viod free plywood I hope to use to build some new speaker cabinets. $50 for all three sheets.

Will I run into any problems using the marine grade?

I've never used this before and If it's not feasable to use I'd like to find out now before I go to all the work of building some nice cabinets.

Thanks for any input.

Well, After building my "Wallrus" and getting them tuned to where they really perform and sound so smooth I had thoughts of building another pair. I never got around to it.

My brother-in-law called me yesterday with the Teak ply. I've always loved the looks of the Khorns but I prefer the Cornwall sound after a few mods.

My planned project is another pair of the Wallrus disguised as Khorns with a cane or tweed front.

Unreal deal on the plywood, Harry! Can you post a picture of the grain? Sounds like it's gorgeous!

You'll probably need to pick up some teak edge banding (or solid stock) to hide exposed edge grain (but you probably already knew that).

Hopefully I can get you pics this afternoon. I drove to Noblesville (about an hour north of me)to look at it and pick it up but I couldn't get it in my Nissan pick up without damaging it. My brother-in-law is supposed to bring it down to me this afternoon. I've got to fix his PC for the delivery. He's got a large construction van ideal for transporting them.

As far as the refinishing goes, I date a girl who's dad owns a vintage furniture restoration business. She is quite talented in refinishing and restoring woods and I'm bringing her into the loop as I begin the build. I'm no expert on refinishing although I can stain and clear quite well. Edge banding and the likes are probably best incorporated into the build.

Definitely sounds pretty; is the wood solid teak, or teak veneered over plywood?

I'm defintely no wood expert, but I can't imagine any wood being void free, but possibly sealed voids (?). Voids, however small, are inherent to the grain structure of wood. It must be sealed (?). Either way, congrats, should make for some pretty speakers.

Harry, I don't now much about the marine grade (probably mostly in the type of glue), but my plan for MY CW's is teak/cane. I don't know if I've ever seen them together but the coloration and 50's deco furniture deco look are spot on. Have at it man.

How's the relocation going?

I haven't seen the look of the cane and teak but I can imagine it clearly in my mind. At this point all I have done on this project is paid my brother-in-law for the plywood. It's still not here yet.

The move is a typical move I guess. Still living at 2 places and surviving out of suitcases until finally settled. I had to get the 6 year old in school where I'm permanently living and still have a lot to do in the apartment. Through the week we're staying at the house and weekends in town at the apartment. Getting closer to finishing up the move though. Thanks.
