sean5340
Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good cartridge for a Pioneer PL-512 turntable? I don't want to break the bank about $100-200 dollars. The system is 1986 JVC 120 per channel reciever and 1979 Lascala's. Thanks Sean
TheEvan
Sean, welcome! Another Looozianan here. The Shure M91 (and whatever other letters accomapny the current model) is a humdinger for under a hundred. Same goes from the AT440ML. sean5340
Thanks for the advice. I'll try the M91. I hope Baton Rouge is getting back to normal since the hurricane. Pretty normal down here.
jcmusic
Sean, The cartridge you want for your system is the Shure M97XE, it will match up nicely with your system. The AT 440 MLa will be a bit bright for your system. Jay
Islander
The Shure M97xE sounds good with my La Scalas.
sean5340
Cool. I found the M97xE on Amazon for $59. There's also a deal that throws in a tracking force gauge for $79. I guess I should get it cause I don't have one. Thanks
jcmusic
Sean get the gage you will need it for sure, unless you come and borrow mine. Jay
TheEvan
Oops, I actually meant M97. I was just showing my age. We're doing fine in BR except for the traffic...but Houma traffic stinks too.
sean5340
Now that I'm putting together my office system I'll need another cart since I sold the M97xe. Some things have changed however. The receiver is an HK3490 and the speakers are JBL 4311's. This system is for near field listening. Pioneer PL-512 turntable. Now, would the M97xe be a good match for this setup? Or is there anything new and exciting that I should consider? The 4311's are not bright and sound very nice near field. I'm looking for something that will excel with acoustic instruments and female vocals. It must work well with piano recordings. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. I can't believe I'm answering on a thread I posted on years ago...after being off the forum for some years, but here I am. As to cartridge choice, I still think the M97xe will fit the bill. It's neutral, warm & present. My listening runs to mostly acoustic, naturally recorded stuff, mostly classical. P.S. Baton Rouge traffic sucks more than ever. sean5340
Houma traffic is bad but nowhere near as bad. I've been doing a bunch of online research and I may try the Ortofon 2M Red. It looks like I can upgrade the stylus down the road. Do you have any experience with the Ortofon?
Jim
Try the RED or Blue. Or for about half the price try the Ortofon OM20. Same goes with stylus upgrade. I'd get a protractor, and gram scale as well to fine tune everything.
