Here's a site that has Programming Guide and Undocumented User Tips for Sony RM-AV2100 Remote. Also has info for other Sony Remotes. Haven't looked their info on other Sony Remotes, because I also have the RM-AV2100. Site does have some useful tips for RM-AV2100 users.

http://www.RemoteCentral.com/av2100/tips.htm

Hope this helps.

I had the RM-AV2100, but got rid of it. In some ways it was a cool remote, but I found myself still using my satellite remote. Why? The damn thing is too big. You can't operate it with one hand. You have to hold it with one hand, and operate with the other. The other thing I didn't like was, although you can teach the remote functions that aren't already stored, you don't always have an appropriate button to program. For example, I like to be able to open/close the DVD player with the remote (some people think that's stupid, but I still want it), I had to program "Eject" to the "Video 1" button. So you have to memorize what you've programmed into which button. To make matters worse, the buttons I programmed this way were mostly not commonly used buttons, so I always had to fumble around to do something that wasn't an everyday thing. I wouldn't think it would be too tough to have a "Button Rename" function. The last thing that bugs me is the Macros. You get only three, and if you own a single piece of Sony equipment, you have to eat up two of them to turn the system off and on. The reason for this is Sony uses "inside codes" for their own stuff (a seperate on button and off button) this is great if you have ALL Sony stuff, but if you don't, you're SOL. All in all, it's a cool gadget to impress house guests, but in a practical sense, it has a few too many downfalls for me.

WHOA!!you can program a macro into ANY of the 'function' buttons, there are about 16 of those. for example: when a customer wants to watch dvd, they press and hold the 'dvd' button, and i program the commands to change video inputs on the tv to dvd, switch the receiver to 'dvd' turn the dvd player on, and the remote becomes a dvd remote! GREAT remote! macros ALWAYS work w/sony equipment, but also work often w/other brands! avman.

Had mine over a year. Couldn't pass up a buy for $99.99 @ ecost.com's 2000 year end sale. The minor issues I have are, size of unit (still better than using 3-4 single remotes), inability to rename icon names and small size of icons/text when using in dimly lit rooms. You must also have unit pretty much in frontal view to clearly see icons & text.

But at the price paid I'm very pleased with its operation. It's used it on a daily basis and has functioned flawlessly w/one change of batteries 11 months after their initial installation. Will get a Pronto when prices fall at or below $200.00, will use the RM-AV2100 to control bedroom HT components.

Ross,

Will check their site after work. Hopefully, they're factory refurbs w/manuf's limited warranty.

Many Thanks!

Hey Keith - Your question generated good add'l info on Sony remote and a Pronto source as well. I'm glad you posted!

Mike and others, about the older Pronto.

I've go the original TS-1000 model and it's got plenty of storage space for all of my equipment. It's got room for both my HT and my family room equipment, with storage to spare. I've even got my CD changer's discs categorized by music type for random play. Mine is set up to switch all my equipment to the proper inputs and it even opens the DVD tray, then pauses on a "insert disc into the tray" screen. My wife loves it (as much as she is capable of appreciating any piece of audio/video equipment that is). The *only* time you'd exceed its memory is if you wanted individually list every CD you've got for direct access to a particular disc.

The TS-2000 model does have more storage capacity, but some of that is taken up by its pre-programmed control codes. You really don't need that if you have access to a computer for programming the Pronto.

I think the 1000 is plenty! And, at $150 for a refurb with factory warranty it's a great buy.

Ross

My friend has the Pronto and it is really cool, more of a palm pilot size, well two palm pilots but still smaller. he has it programed to do all kinds of stuff, still though, his HT really lacks... TOshiba 32" TV and a 5.1 speaker system made of Technics and RCA... yuck. Trying to talk him into a Klipsch system... Smile.gif

Thanks for the info Ross! I have never gone the refurb route and was wondering why it would be refurbished in the first place? I don't have a problem buying used... it's just the word "refurbished" that scares me. I agree that $150 is a great price for the remote but can you get a TS-1000 new any more? If so, where?

Thanks again for all your input...

Mike,

The Pronto's something I wouldn't hesitate to purchased refurbished. Their only weakness is that they are somewhat fragile if dropped onto a hard surface or they are squashed. If dropped hard enough, there's a choke inside them that can break and the screen backlight goes out. If squashed, the screen can break. In fact, my oldest son broke the screen on my first Pronto.

I assume it's because of these issues that there are refurbs out there. My first Pronto was exchanged by my dealer and I'm sure it was resold with a new screen. I've not heard of Prontos dying without some kind of abuse, so I wouldn't be afraid of buying a rebuilt one.
