Somebody please talk me off the ledge!

So I'm building a new house with a dedicated theater room. Its not massive. I think about 18x15 - ish. I wasnt able to craft a custom enclosure for the RF-7s to make them fit flush with the back wall. We all know how big these things are and in an effort to "cleanup" the HT I have toyed with the idea of ditching the RF-7's and putting in some In-wall speakers in their place. I know the 2-channel music wont be nearly as good but what about HT? I have a RC-64 and will soon get either RS-7's / RS-63's or Hell I may just put In-walls all the way around for my 4 surrounds. I know this option will look better, but im not too sure I will enjoy the sound as much in HT mode nor do i want to let go of the RF-7's I do love them like my children. Please share your thoughts, and talk me off this ledge.

BLASPHEMY!!! With that kind of thinking, you only have three options:

1. Audio Counseling

2. Torture by being confined in a small dark room listening to a BOSE system.

3. Mail the RF-7's to me. As a friend of the forum, I will help you out by paying the shipping on them.

In all seriousness, please reconsider what you are thinking. Trading RF-7's for inwalls? Who needs a "clean" HT room. I thought that was the purpose of having a dedicated theater room is so that the WAF is no longer a factor. That's what we are doing. My wife said when we build our house in May, she wants me to have a dedicated HT so that she will not have to see any speakers in the living room. Works for me.

I have a RC-64 and will soon get either RS-7's / RS-63's or Hell I may just put In-walls all the way around for my 4 surrounds.

I'm not listening....Blah...Blah...Blah.....

I know this option will look better, but im not too sure I will enjoy the sound as much in HT mode nor do i want to let go of the RF-7's I do love them like my children. Please share your thoughts, and talk me off this ledge.

If you REALLY love your "children" you will not give them up for adoption.

On a side note, how do you like the Yamaha 2700? I will be getting the RF-83's and at one time was considering getting the 2700. Now I'm beginning to lean towards an HK with an external amp. Still deciding but wanted to get thoughts from an owner of the 2700.

I really do love the 2700. I have always had Yammy's not sure why, probably because its all my old man used to have when i was growing up, and now the man is using denon, go figure. I got a killer deal on the 2700 when Tweeter was giong out of biz. I picked it up for 900 i think. What i truely love about this thing is the onboard power and the HDMI hookups on the back. Currently I run a B&K 220 for the RF-7's (I highly recommend putting the RF-7's on a sep amp) and run the others on yammy power. All in all I do like the 2700 and will use it until i become either blown away by another product or till it fails me.

Well you could try to frame in the speakers and use acoustically transparent cloth to make it look clean. With the new lossless audio on Blu Ray/HD DVD home theater can use all the fidelity you can give it. I'm amazed at how sweet some of this sounds. From the Gilmour Blu Ray to the instrumental Bond theme on Casino Royale (the Cornell track is great as well) I'm constantly amazed. So don't build a home theater room only to downgrade. You'll regret it.

Curmudgeon alert!!!!

At the risk of zigging when so many are zagging (as someone had to put those ideas into your head!), why not just put them in the corners????

Now I know(sic) that most worry more about aesthetics than the quality of the sound, but I simply don't see the dilemma here.

And if you are worried about someone seeing the speakers when the lights are dimmed and the movie is playing, i would suggest the problem lies with those staring at the speakers instead of the screen, and I would think that it is easier to find more intelligent friends who can figure out where the picture is than to find better speakers.

This reminds me of all the folks who are convinced that a LaScala is too tall to place a TV atop or above it and instead want to flip the M/H horns onto their side and radically change the polars for the 'much worse' orientation, and thus dramatically increasing the amount of acoustical energy directed towards, and reflected off, the floor and ceiling. And this early arriving first order reflections constitutes energy that must be absorbed or effectively diffused.

In these cases the cure is much worse than the imagined problem...and it represents 'simply changing things in an effort to correct...well we aren't quite sure what we are correcting, but we are sure it needs correcting' at its best/worst....

Soffit mounting is possible for some speakers, but it is neither a trivial issue nor a matter of simply framing in a box! The speaker must be isolated from the surrounding wall in order to prevent energy transmission to the wall and to prevent the wall from becomeing a secondary radiative source; and the framed space acts as a tuned space that will adversely modify the response of the speaker as well as detrimentally coupling with the room. Again, such mounting can be done, but it is not trivial and not simply a matter of framing in an alcove...

Additionally, for HT and mutlichannel use, I would focus on having 3 identical front speakers. If you don't trust me, I can dig out quotes from folks such as Russ Berger who insist that this is fundamental and it is observed in the multi quadrillion dollar mixing and mastering suites - despite so many feeling D'Appolitto inspired sideways mounted MTM configurations are best for center speakers - I guess because Best Buys features them.....And yes, I am being sarcastic. As it bothers me to see so many, in an attempt to do the right thing, fall victim to so many myths based upon some fancy picture that features more velvet and aesthetics than acoustical sense.

The fundamentals are actually quite easy. Don't make them harder than they need be!

{Oh, and to run off in one more tangent...I also get a perverse sense of enjoyment (as I cringe in horror/humor) watching a pending trainwreck as so many lust over some $3-5000 multichannel receiver when they could get a perfectly good front end processor /pre-amp for a fraction of the price and simply add 3-4 Crown Xtis amps for $1200-$1600 that will so totally exceed the puny integrated amps that all share the same puny power supply that cost twice what the Crown amps cost.}

I guess the power of marketing is really that strong. If only ratonal thought were....

So please relax and focus on room treatment to maximize the
acoustical properties of the room. You are already 2/3 of the way there with
fine
speakers and a dedicated room! Don't get sidetracked manufacturing
problems with mediocre solutions.

And if you still have some say in the room topology, PM me and I can suggest a few very simple mods that can make the room better and eliminate some of the necessary treatment by avoiding the problems from the outset rather than having to correct for them afterwards.

I have 2 RB-75 Klipsch Bookshelf Speakers (Fronted ported and mate to the RF-7s) & 1 RC-7/2 RS-7s, that were slightly used in our bedroom that I will sell you for $1800 plus your RF-7s (if they aren't damaged anymore than the speakers included in on the deal) and I will let you audition them in the DFW area. If you want a 7 channel set up I will throw in a pair of RB-5 IIs for $300. All speakers are cherry except the RS-7s which are in black. This way you may not have to upgrade your AVR and have a well matched system that will accommodate the room.

That might actually be funny if it weren't so true. Between that and seismic blasts cracking windows, jeeesh.
