Would it be Treason?

I Have a set of bose 701s that i have pretty much lost most of my respect for. They sounded good when i got the great in fact, but after getting and praticaally all KG system, they just dont stack up. Would like to know though, would I have a change of retro fitting the cabnets it two klipsch 8" woffers two horn tweeters and a 6 or 6 1/4" midrange say from a center channel. Its not that i miss the the sound of the bose at all.... its the way the sound got there i liked. When i used the bose for Rear surrond it was a great feel but they just couldnt keep up with my kg4s 2.5s and kv1 up front. when i put my kg 1.5s and KG 1s for rear surround there was no comparrison as far as quality delivery and clarity.... but the reas sound great but empty to me. If any one has tried some like this or has any advice on which woofers and tweeters and such too use, mid cross over wire for proper impeadance would be awsome. OR.... If its a compleate waste of time and money it would be really nice to know before i started pursining it. just got the idea with i sat my 1.5s and 1s on top of each other... like bose cubes... only bigger... i was like has was if I took those 701s and totally gutted them and rebuilt them with you know.... real drivers, peal the bose emblem off and super glue a klipsch tag inplace for a total mind bender. Hey im sure people have tried stranger stuff... and if it is treason.... i never said any of this lol.

First off, there is only so much information going to the rears, not every 5.1 movies, concerts sound the same. Wouldn't you be smarter just to sell the Bose 701's and go from there ............ again, not dogging you, but you are still basically a 2 way system, and I have a feeling, if you ever hear a Klipsch 3 way system you'll want to change, so why invest the money now, wait and see what happens ......... Sell the bose, even with Klipsch drivers, they won't be Klipsch ................ I think there's more to it than just changing raw speakers !!!!!!!!!!!!

It is very difficult to design a crossover and have it sound good.

The center channel must match the timbre of the main speakers, this is more complicated than just the frequency response. I am very experienced and have all the test equipment. Every now and then I can end up with a design that measures well, but sounds poor. I don't want to discourage you from this as a hobby, but you would be very lucky to get something listenable on your first (or second) try.

If you wanted to re-hab the Bose boxes with better parts for a two channel system, that would more likely to yield something you could listen to.

First of all... i have heard many shapes and sizes of Klipsch Speaks and for my listening tastes i really have heard a pair i ddint like. However. I would put a well powered set of KG 4s on the floor and a pair of 2.5s roughly 2' above and to the out side of most comparable 3 ways... again not saying i dont like the 3 way designs of the say forts. i heard them they sound great how ever i really like the way the way i have speaker placement. its a wall of sound.

Second... This was more a question for DIYs that have might tried or build there own custom cabs. Further more... I well aware that there is more to it than just replacent raw drivers.... im not trying to be a jerk.... but i did ask specifics on which drives to use for instance what model tweet why type of horn which model 8 inch woofes crossover choices and specific wire instructions... series parallel. Impeadance isssuse as i dont have that expericance and apparantly you only think there is more too it than changing drivers... you dont know, im not sure that i talking to the right guy, not to mention i am more than aware they wouldnt be anything resembling a klipsch production speaker, neither are 90% of the DIY center channels i have seen on the forums, of which im sure 5 or 6 of them would get a solid stamp of approval from the klipsch goo ru's. but they would remain DIY centers no mater how good they sound even though they were engeneered, and in a couple cases with the help of a klipsch guys, to a "T".

But most of all, I would never... i mean never... try to pass them off for anything other than what they were.
It would be like putting say Viper v10 motor in a Volvo and still calling it a Viper. But it would be a fast Volvo wouldn't it?
And Selling the bose.... well i would just tell who ever was going to buy them... spend 50 bucks and buy a set of 4s

ir really dont belive it the way they sound or may i blew them up but what i did like was HOW they filled a room with sound, how its gets to your ear especialy when watching movies. the 1.5s and 1s sound better but... those bose just sounded more i guess.

and as for there being more to it im sure.... the cabnets wont be tuned to the new drive like they should be But i am willing to bet there is some one that could tell me if it would be close enough to say "hey what the hell its worth a shot", or "hey dumby it just one work becuase of the total dynamics of the drivers is compleaty differnent", or even something like " yea it might work but make sure to get this mid range drive and these woofers for the to best match the air space they have" that more kinda the info im looking for sir with all do respect, i see you post a lot but just sell the bose and say i think there is more to it wasnt exacly what i was looking for lol.

And heck the worst that would happen is it might sound like crap... omg those crappy bose i bought... still sound like crap... and would probly still rock out as computer speakers or something nice for my wife to have in her living room, or hell take the driver i bought for them build some thing for them may a center or some neat one of kind side surrounds. Was just through the ida out there.

DIYers what you think. Looking for specifics

oh and my two way system btw jonny... if you think about it the 4s 2.5s 1s 1.5s and KV1 all have different frequency responces cabnet sizes and multiple types and size of tweeters and woofers and midrange drives providing a 5 channel blend.. i understand what your saying with the whole its just two way, but im into usesing all 5 channels... not just my mains for mustic 5 channel stereo was the coolest feture i have found yet on my recievers. I

Its not the speaker the make the movie or song its the sum or its parts. while just im lacking a midrange persay, the 2.5 has nice mid bass to high end while the 4 delive the punch. i knew the 4s had a soft spot in the midrange... kinda why i got 2.5s to help them.

anyhow Would love to hear from some one that maybe know a little about speaker construction or DIY projects and swapping cross overs really any insight if the swap would be a good idea othere than just sell them. what fun would that be.

And how cool would it be if they did rock to go to the bose forums and tell them how i complealy gutted a set of mint 701s and turned them into a dissfigured bastard child of the KG series?

So are you saying acually build my own crossover from scratch? i was think of pireting one but have no idea what one. they are a 3 way speaker with two 8" woofers two tweeter and one mid range i would like to replace all of them... could i just reuse the bose crosse over or would it be insufficain? or would it have something built into it for the refleting sid fire midrange? Have any sugjestion for what 8 inch woofer what tweeter what mid? model numbers a crossed i could score on ebay or a local radio shack... i have to to tear a speaker apar and put it back together but making a custom cross over that is beyond my skill as a mechanic lol. or maybe not how hard is it what books would sugjest please be specific i am starting to get excited lol

I wouldn't recommend it for two reasons. The first is that buying speaker parts piece meal is generally more expensive than buying the whole speaker. So it's not an economical proposition.

The second is that the sound you are accustomed to in Klipsch is finely tuned from enclosure, drivers and crossover. Just installing some drivers and a crossover in a box is not likely to produce finely tuned results.

I strongly concur with Oldbuckster................Ebay the Bose, take the money and either buy the Klipsch product you need, Or just invest the Money in an Insured CD................

But I know you won't listen to Us Oldsters..................

I hear ya guys... i wasnt knocking what you alll had to say i was looking for opinions it it would work how i could make it work or if it would suck... as far as expence is concerned i would probly use used or wholesale parts to keep cost down. And as before i was wanting educated guess on what cool make them work. and i was just kinda what to try something differnt... read on a forum where a guy built a large center channel to go with his KG 5.5 and had custome encloseures for his rears outfitted with all klipcsh drivers... and odly enough it did resemble a very tall 701 in shape. any sujestions for a good klipsch set that would kill the rear like the bose only with ofcourse the the sound im looking fo

That's like dressing up a pig in lace panties and supermodel lingerie. It will still be a pig. You can slap a Klipsch logo on your chain saw too, but I don't think it will help. Why not just buy some used Klipsch speakers to replace them?

srobak, Are those your speakers? They are pretty interesting ...... wonder how they sound ?

(mind you not that I care if they are or not)

My guess is no...and that's because in the picture you see the outlet on the wall? I'm thinking that's a european outlet? Since he's in Chicago, those aren't his.

What's my prize? Or am I an oaf?
