The Top 200 Rock Guitarists

how about Marvel's old running mate...Gary Richrath. I think Gary is one of the most underrated rock guitarists.

REO Speedwagon's Live - You Get What You Play For was, and still is, one of my favorite live albums growing up.... was going to buy the CD until I read all the comments about how they chopped out a lot of Gary's guitar solos to fit it on one disc - and he was supposedly executive producer or something like that - I'd like to think he didn't realize they were chopping it up until after he had signed

on guitar riffs ... I see "Frankenstein" by The Edgar Winter Band but no "Free Ride" so I can't complain but I've always loved the riff in "Free Ride" too . "Frankenstein" also has some really cool synth work, I think some of the earliest where the synthesizer was used to create new sounds as a lead instrument and not to mimic other instruments

and speaking of Edgar Winter - he claims to have invented the concept of the strap on synthesizer - and not one of those little toy like ones that you often see hanging by a strap but a good sized Korg (I think, or whatever brand he plays)

Props to Steely Dann, but not because of guitar prowess.

True, but you got to give it up to Fagan for playing that little harmonica/keyboard/recorder thingy live in concert

Number one all time harmonica/keyboard/recorder thingy artist: Donald Fagan

I think it's called a "melodica" and I have flashbacks of my dad playing one when I was like 5 , or it could have been the mushrooms.......

It is still a very rockin album. I've seen them three times and they are a good "live" band--definitely took a huge slide when Gary left. It's a shame that Kevin Cronin somehow got control of the band. I've said it before...REO is a classic example of what happens when you take a band away from the guitarist and give it to the singer.

Freddie Mercury had an ego as big as any star's; however, from the very early days he was encouraging all members of Queen to contribute--those royalties are often a bone of contention. Kevin Cronin recently said something like he was happy playing county fairs and indian casinos. Sadly, neither Richrath nor REO were as good after he left.

Yep! I saw them live on that tour in '76 I believe and they were a phenomenal band back then. I have literally wore that album out and it is one of my favorite live albums. Like You Do is one of the greatest songs live I have ever heard and seen, and Gary Rickrath is a very underappreciated guitarist!

I would also like to mention that Joe Bonamassa at #67 is a total joke! There might be 10 guys on that list that are in the same league with him, and that might be stretching it!

REO Speedwagon without Gary Richrath. That's just not right! [:'(] I hadn't thought of it as the singer taking control but that's right on the head as in my mind REO turned into a mega successful pop band after Live - You Get What You Play For - probably their last album when they knew what it was to be a rock band. I need to get out the minty looking vinyl copy I picked up over spring break back in April and fire up the turntable. Unfortunately I've never seen them live and not sure I want to if Gary Richrath is no longer part of the band as even if they're still good it would still be disappointing.

I don't get any of these lists -- what criteria are they using? If using just mastery of the instrument, then that list is really whacked. How anyone can look down that list and end up with those four at the top is laughable!

Hendrix and Clampton laughable guitarist....??? WOW!! Not deserving of being at the top, DOUBLE WOW!!

Who would you have selected to surpass these two?

Whoa, good question. IMO she is in the top ten worst. She is good to look at but she can't play guitar especially considered the success she has had for that very limited time frame, I hear that Jay Roach likes the way she plays the flute however.

What's your problem Nachoman, she's looking pretty good to me; or is it, looking pretty bad? Anyway, I wouldn't kick her sumpt'in, sumpt'in sumpt'in for eating crackers.

No. 1 is definitely Paige. There are a great many others with far better technical prowess, but technical prowess means nothing when the tune is just musically crappy. Paige had it all! Sufficient technical prowess, coupled with the greatest range of creativity in any guitarist there ever was. Just think of all the Zep albums in order over time, take a step back, and look over the magic of what he was able to create time and time, again. There is no other contender.

Compare Zep III to I and II. Compare IV to III. Compare Physical Graffiti to IV. Compare all those to Houses of the Holy. Compare them all to In Through the Out Door. How does Presence differ from the rest?

He was as close to genius as they can come.
