Damn, This came up again and I had to pull my glasses off, wipe my eyes, and can't swallow. Rob's passing left a hole in me. Barb and I still send silly emails and I just got some new pics of the family a couple of weeks ago so it's not like he's totally gone. RIP buddy. I picked up a pair of the 2CE about 10 months ago. I sold them March 14th on Ebay for $599 to a local buyer on pick up. Mine had boxes, manuals, the metal stands, all packing and original bags with them. I restored them cosmetically. Not a bad speaker. Weird build with the wooden column cage around the cabinet. The lady that bought them new had cats and I had to replace the grill cloth on them, repair the front columns on both speakers, and repaint the columns. I also had to repair the top and bottom caps on them. Bottom caps are held on with screws to access the cloth. Tops are secured with black rubber and have to be pryed off. Hundreds of staples to remove and the black rubber has to be scraped. Not an easy task. IF they need new socks on them just be prepared to put in some elbow grease and time. They like power with the smaller rear passive in them. Not a bass monster by any means. Placement is very critical on them and they don't like a larger room. They sound more like a vintage Polk Monitor 7 raised up off the floor about 18" than anything else I can think of. Maybe a little brighter on top. Very similar I played them out on a pair of 50wpc tube monoblocks and a Sansui 9090DB so I know I gave them plenty of power. I was always waiting for the speaker to "stand up and get my attention" but it always left me wanting more out of it. There's links on the factory site about placement you might want to check out.

You might want to blow any dirt from the tuner fin plates and then use a non-residue cleaner on them. Wash thoroughly running the tuner from one side to the other while washing them down. Make sure you let it dry completely before powering back up. It shouldn't take long to dry as most of the non-residue cleaners are Isopryl alcohol anyway. The reception will improve also. It works. I just did it to my 717 and 719 Sansui tuners. The 719 was way off before cleaning.

Baldwins

Jay, Curiosity got the best of me when I read this post. I've spent the last couple of days doing 5U4 listening tests on 5 Baldwin monoblocks and I'll go with the old clear RCA 5u4G coke bottles, then the Sylvania Smoked glass coke bottles or Raytheon tall boys. Original Baldwin RCA black plates were a little brighter and less desireable after a lot of listening. I have some GE "stubby" 5U4s that I thought were actually a little "lifeless". I did hear minor differences in the rectifiers. I don't think there were enough differences that I'd really be concerned with confining myself to one brand or type. Listening was done through an Electrocompaniet SS preamp, Denon CDP, and MC Supex SDX-1000 cartridge on an old KLH X-60 TT. I tested all 5u4s on my B&K 707 I just went through and restored and calibrated. All tubes tested over 90% and no leaks or shorts. All tubes quiet. I have multiple tubes of the same brand so I listened to the same brands a couple of times and they were very similar or identical in sound. All Baldwins have been rebuilt or completely modified so they all have different personalities. I built the Baldwins in matching pair monoblocks with a single 20w mono being the lone monoblock not matched with another. Different caps and even "canned the cans" on the red monos and used Nichicon caps and Mundorf S/O to replace all the caps in the red Baldwins. The most noticable difference was in these amps with the filter cans and all caps being replaced. I had to switch back and forth numerous times to even notice and appreciate the different personalities of the tubes. I used Vinyl and CD as sources to see IF it made a difference to MY EARS. I listen mostly to vinyl but do a lot of "quick listening" to CD. Same source material was used for all listening.
