Yes, I have a 4 way ( 3 way Khorn and Danley SUB) The setup is as purely digital as possible player (A PC at 96Khz\24bit ) optic SPDIF into DEQ2496 (RC + EQ to taste + at night time: compression for low level listening) then an XLR Y cable from the digital out into 2 DCX2496 for crossover and time alignment, use a high quality and short as possible cable, (Had crackling problems with others). I started out wanting SS Character for the bass, and tubes for the mids and highs, but ended up fully SS, as I couldn't meld the different sound characteristics to work together, it might have been a wave phasing problem between the tube amps vs the SS, or a psychoacoustics thing I don't know. Once I implemented the Lecleche crossover formula http://freerider.dyndns.org/anlage/LeCleach.htm everything exceeded my wildest expectations. and also opened up a whole world of experimenting because you are free to dial in many other horn and driver combinations, I also did a 2 way crossing the khorn bass at 500hz, but the 3 way sounded better to me.

I Quad amp using a digital active crossover The benefits are when you need to time align the drivers (such as K-horn alignment and a sub) and you use steep slopes with particular phasing, or you simply want to DIY and try out different drivers and horns. I think simply by-amping using two amps, without an active crossover, would only benefit when the power amp going to the lows, approaches clipping leaving the highs safe from overload and clean sounding.
  4. In answer for T.H.E. Droid, DCX2496 is a swiss army knife for audio, and for me it spells freedom. I'm running khorns in a 10x14 room, basically a disaster if not used with EQ in this room, adding acoustic paneling and going tri amp simply bumped everything into the next level and there is no going back You can plug in a Mic into the DCX and it will automatically measure and set the different time delays required. and then you can tweak from that point basically when time aligned, the sound kind of "jells" in front of the speaker With AA crossover, some mid freq. seem to emanate from the bass bin and rear walls which simply spoils things and seems out of place, In my room, The K401 sounded like a resonant pipe on its bottom end, and shrill on top, the K77 sounded tizzy. I went through several incarnations included an altec511b horn with k55 to replace the k401, (now Im back with the k401 which I feel suits the k55 for a reason). My current system is as follows: PC plays digital signal into optic tosslink spdif, this goes into a DEQ2496 which I use for room correction, RTA display for measurements , (although the pc with REW software can also do this and much more),the DEQ is also used for night listening by compressing the dynamic range, its also used to add salt & pepper iow tone control if desired. the signal path continues purely digital on the AES\EBU link into the DCX for crossing over, In the DCX, I also use a the dynamic EQ, unlike static EQ, this is used to automatically only add more bass below a certain input level threshold with a soft knee, this compensates for the ears lack of sensitivity for bass below a certain spl. its great for classical music during those low passages so they don't sound so lean, it also helps to "turn it down" and still think your at loud levels. Instead of K77, Im using a titanium tweeter from Selenium, crossed over at about 2Khz, as I feel the k401 is not so good above 1-2Khz, (this is subjective mind you) I use Butterworth 18db filter slopes, properly EQ'd, the khorns are flat from 32Hz on up, plenty of bass, dynamics, plenty of everything really, no more ghosts from the bass bin, no more pipe sound, no shrill but it took a while to get there

I'v done it, It opened up a whole new horizon and fantastic sound, with me it all started out in an effort to get Tubes on the top and a solid state Amp for bass First impressions where that I couldn't get the different amp's characters in sound to blend, plus I believe the tube amp had some kind of phasing over the frequency that caused a problem blending with the ss amp within the crossover region. so I went fully solid state tri amp, but could not hear any benefit in tri amping with active cross vs the passive cross (typa AA) that I was imitating electronically. Things dramatically improved and justified the effort when I applied proper time alignment, changed slopes and EQ'd A fantastic side element is that with a digital cross over, I could plug in and out different drivers tweeters and horns to play around and have everything work together. I experimented 2 way vs 3 way I can experiment with different slopes and crossover Freq. by pressing a few knobs. I'm soon about to quadamped as I'm adding a sub woofer into the mix. Keep in mind When you EQ a speaker, (especially bass boost) you are trading more non linear distortion (IM+HD) for the benefit of less linear distortion (better freq response) and its fantastic to be able to tune your system by a flip of a button.

I tried to follow through to the end of that saga, Turns out crown actually took notice and tested production units They concluded that if the main supply voltage drops to 115V or below and the load is a resistor and the test signal is a continuous sine wave, then they have some low DC or some other overly sensitive protection circuit that kicks in too early, I don't know if it is at all possible to test those amps while clipping, they probably never clip with all this political correctness built into them. as correct as a 7 calorie cheeseburger. :-) I just got 2 dts10 subs waiting for an amp, I guess Xti wont be it.

Its all about Linear Distortion suppose you have a perfect mono recording taken by a perfect microphone on a perfect recording device. and you play it back on a perfect player\amp using a perfect speaker in an unechoic room, Did you remember to match playback volume IOW spl levels? if not, then you need to apply EQ right there and then to compensate for the ear\brain loudness perception. Now Add multi channel mixing at different levels to stereo that occurs at a miss spl levels vs the original channels. add room acoustics, add Non linear distortion in the chain (non linear distortion adds harmonics thus changes energy spread throughout the frequency spectra thus changes ear\brain FR PERCEPTION), and finally add the mixing engineer with his own idea of sound, he too touched the tone control. I firstly EQ to a flat response at the listening position, and then deviate to my ears content, mainly bass and 12khz boost, and not intimidated going 20db boost or cut if it sounds good to me. some recordings were mixed down to fit dynamics of LP's and AM radios, my K's deserve a better signal.

  10. billybob My PC is the ONLY audio source for my K-horns, youtube quality varies wildly and is mostly horrible with a few exceptions, I would recommend a MOG.com or Rhapsody subscription, or Naxosmusiclibrary\naxosradio if you are into classical music.

I did try the k55\Altec 511b +k77 route, but they dont load that well at 400Hz as as the k401 do, They are fantastic with the Selenium D220, measured very well @1khz, so using k400 mid + 511b high for many monthes now, Im getting some smaller horns to see the behaviour difference on the high end, For me The k55\K401 isn't harsh if used only up to 1+K. Despite being plastic, I thought it used to sound like a resonant pipe\bell somewhere in the 350-500 region, but since gone active I dont get that at all any more, so I think I changed my mind about the k400, its nice between 400-1k'ish.. 6l6

Al K Your right about the peak, I had AA network, but now I'm using a 3 way time aligned active, and have done a lot of experimentation this past year, one example: EQ the basshorn flat and crossing at 500 in a 2 way configuration, it measured flat, but the dispersion in the room sounded all wrong, One of the best sounding experiments at very low volumes was a 3 way k55\401 at 300-770hz (48db slope) and Selenium D220 from 770. I also swapped in a direct radiator I had around to cover that small gap, but distortion stood out. Finally I have settled down on k55\401@ 450hz and D220 from 1.5K at 18db slopes and tuned according to the Le-Cleache excel sheet. +EQing for a more technically correct response on both ends. > 6l6

Thanks, I was toying the idea, I thought it could be possible to get an even lower distortion than the stock khorn at the 250-1500 region, and then cut over to a compression driver from about 1500, to my ears the khorn isnt quit right from 300 and up, not only from a distortion point but the sound is too ambient and reflective at around 300-500. 6l6
