  1. $1000 speakers and you won't pay $70/each shipped (@ Sweetwater)? there is absolutely nothing to these mats -they are made from recycled foam and rubber - that's it - I get these in palleted shipments all the time - we have these 5 inches thick - what I do for my scalas and cornwalls is cut off 2 inches on a router - and just sit the speakers right in the cutaway with 4 spikes at the corners - they work great with amps & turntables - I add grounding wires screwed to the rubber portion - Hook a brother up Randyh lol lol your local computer shop or anyone who has Servers shipped to them has this foam in the recycling containers this insulation makes the bass -midrange sound very good in heresies mostly and some Cornwalls - I have even seen some foam inside the dog house in scalas - Klpsch didnt use the insulation as it was costly - wait, what? klipsch didn't insulate speakers because it was too costly? 'm no aficionado but that just doesn't sound right to me...
  2. When I go to a movie, I go for entertainment, if there is truth portrayed, then all the better. In the wake of the movies popularity there is much to read regarding its accuracy, in any case, I enjoyed how Mr. Kyle's purpose was so concretely portrayed. God, country, family. His mission was clear, on all front's, and he appeared to live accordingly but not without consequence. I found that refreshing and respectable. “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.” ― Theodore Roosevelt
  3. Re-working my LaScalas and trying to save some $$$, looking for a pair of Crites A/4500's and Crites CT-125 tweeters. Thanks.
  4. Any chance you're still here and have some pictures of the ports you are referring to as well as the back/inside of top box?
  5. Thanks for the replies. I am skilled at working with wood and am comfortable with any of the paths. The LS i have are circa 92 from what I can tell by the S/N. They are not the split type. I like the look of Pancho's LS, very nice! I'm leaning towards adding a layer of plywood. I think I can achieve the split look by doing this as well as the wrap around cover for the tweeter/squawker box as Coyote suggests. WMcD, I do not quite understand what is meant by the collar and when you speak of improvements would that be aesthetic or audible or both? Thanks for all the suggestions! Please keep them coming!
  6. I'm awestruck by their sound and have wanted a pair forever. This pair presented itself and was affordable. I can deal with the cosmetics. This is the worst of it, 1 speaker only. I like the veneers I've seen but I also want to try the bass box option (that LS sits on) so I'm more inclined to overlay a nice finished plywood.
  7. My La Scalas have not been treated very kindly by their previous owners. I have thought about a few things to make them look more presentable and looking for feedback (pro's con's) from those who have traveled down this road. Option 1 Veneer Option 2 Shell replacement (top bottom left and right sides) Option 3 Add a layer of plywood around existing box. Thoughts?
  8. Yes it went away. It was a lower frequency, started low, increased linearly to a peak and then quit. did not get loud or painful. If I find a bad solder joint how to I check the cap to see if it is good or if it needs replaced. Replaced 7 caps in each XO.
  9. I'll start looking at connections. Everything was pretty firmly attached when dissembling and reassembling. Can I put a meter on the caps to check them? DeanG is there something you recommend?
  10. I recently acquired a pair of 1982 La Scalas. They have the AL-3 crossover networks that I replaced the caps in using a Bob Crites kit. I'd like to test the network to make sure that I did everything correctly. On a side note, while listening today, after about 10 minutes a strange hum began and as soon as I heard it i got up and went to the stereo (12 feet from me) to turn it off and when I got there it had peaked and then just stopped. I couldn't tell if it was from 1 or both speakers. No smoke or odor, nothing that I could easily pinpoint. At the time I was listening to a TV concert. TV signal to McIntosh C-28 pre-amp sent to a pair of Dynaco Mk III's then to the La Scalas. New to forum, ther is a lot of la scala information here and a few searches yielded a ton of results but nothing I thought was in the right direction. Thanks in advance!
