So basically you just have the satellite speakers? Like, you basically have what could probably called GMX-A2.0? It's a total of 28W (14W x 2). I don't know what that means in terms of connecting these as passive speakers. You'll probably get an extremely low volume if they're not amplified.

My first (and only) experience with Klipsch is with the original ProMedia 2.1 system. Back in the early to mid 2000s, a friend of mine asked me to help him with his ProMedia 2.1 system because one of his satellite speakers stopped working. Even with just 1 satellite working, I was very impressed by the sound. I immediately wished I had the ProMedia 2.1 system! After I helped him fix it, I was even more impressed by the sound. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, but at the same time I wasn't surprised because of the amount of power he told me the amp has (I didn't really know anything else about speakers except that wood subwoofer cabinets are better than plastic lol). I was a little sad at this point because I had recently purchased the Altec Lansing VS4121 and I loved it, so I didn't really see myself replacing it anytime soon. I also didn't have enough money for the ProMedia 2.1 system! I went home that day kinda bummed that it would probably be several years before I'd get my own ProMedia 2.1 system. For the next several years, I would often think about the sound I heard that day and I'd always compare it to the sound I was getting with my Altec Lansing VS4121. Even though I absolutely loved the sound I was getting, I would still long for the sound of the ProMedia 2.1. The sound I heard that day really stuck with me! Finally 2 years ago I decided to buy one. I placed my order for a brand new one and in my excitement I immediately came to this forum and began reading posts. I quickly learned that the new ProMedia 2.1 systems are inferior to the originals. Uh-oh! I kept reading and learned how to identify the original and so I went looking for one on eBay. I was lucky enough to find one in barely-used mint condition! I placed my order for that one and then I immediately cancelled my order for the new one and I was all set and VERY happy about what was coming. When it arrived, I just couldn't stop smiling. I finally had that sound that I have been longing for all these years! Woo-hoo!! It was just as impressive as I remember. I felt kinda bad for my beloved Altec Lansing VS4121 system because there's still nothing wrong with it, but the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 is much better! I'm keeping the VS4121 as my backup just in case though. I was also lucky enough to replace my speaker wires with the Monster speaker cables, and that made a huge audible and tangible difference. The tangible difference is, I had to make big adjustments to my Graphic Equalizer and other similar tone adjustments because I didn't need anywhere near the same amount of tone compensation. So, I knew it wasn't just The Placebo Effect. To this day, this is still my only experience with Klipsch, but I'm definitely going to be looking at Klipsch first the next time I need to buy any kind of speakers!

This is only a guess, but I think it may be overheating somehow. Are you using a high volume or high subwoofer level? Or is it at a comfortable level while seated right in front of the satellite speakers?

I wouldn't want to attempt this because this is a personal speaker system, intended for use at a computer to fill the immediate space in front of the monitor. The ProMedia 2.1 and 5.1 systems can be hurt if you try to fill an entire room for extended periods of times, especially if it's to be used as the source of music for a party. Now of course, if you just want to have this thing quietly playing music in the background to fill silent moments, then that's fine - it can do that no problem because the system can get quite loud. I would expect it to be able to fill a large bedroom quite easily (like maybe 15 feet by 15 feet?), but just keep in mind it's intended to be used while sitting at a computer. So, I think you can do it, but go easy on it. I'm curious: how big is this room and how many people will be in it? Also, how loud do you want the music to be? Also keep in mind that the sound can be quite bad if the satellites aren't pointed right at your ears.

Phrases like "extended periods" for products like speaker systems always means like, "weeks". Y'know? Like, when you're going on a long vacation or if you know you won't be using the speaker system for an extended amount of time - like weeks or months. I wouldn't call 1 week "extended". 2 weeks, maybe. 3, definitely. 4 weeks or more, absolutely. However, this has nothing to do with the reasons why the PM 2.1 system should be left on 24/7. I think what they SHOULD mention is, it would be safer to leave it plugged in for extended periods of non-use if you had it connected to a very good surge suppressor.

Oh wow. Were they still plugged in? I'm wondering if maybe they were harmed by being plugged directly into a wall outlet with no surge protection.

I don't blame you. I got lucky with mine. It turned out that the previous owner never used them. Most people power their speaker systems on and off every day, but that's a very bad idea with the PM 2.1 system. That's how they die quickly.

You might be able to find some very good original PM 2.1 systems for sale on eBay.

I have a question: You guys are making me worried mine will start doing the same thing some day. I have the same original PM 2.1 system with the power switch on the amp, only I never turn mine off. I really do leave it on 24/7. Are you guys (or were you) turning yours on and off every day? Or did this problem begin happening even though you left it on 24/7?

The ProMedia 2.1 system should be left on 24/7. There's no good reason to turn it off, unless you're going to be gone for several months and you don't like the idea of it drawing like 1-2 watts 24/7 while you're away. Even then, it's fine to leave it on. So, if you can get this sound to stop at some point after powering it on, then leave it on and never turn it off. Due to lower quality parts being used in this speaker system, turning it off and on every single day can actually kill the amplifier, but probably not until after worse and worse problems develop over time. It just can't take that daily abuse, and for this speaker system, turning it off and on every day is pretty harsh. Klipsch will even recommend that you leave this system on 24/7 if you ask them. There's really no benefit to turning it off.

Because of low-quality parts. Yes, Klipsch recommends leaving the system on 24/7 (but you only find that out if you ask them, strangely enough). There's nothing wrong with doing that, and it only consumes a watt or two when there's no sound being put through it. So, just leave it on 24/7 and enjoy a longer life out of your ProMedia 2.1 system and you can have peace of mind that you're not killing it.

I think the Main Volume knob turns the power off when turned all the way to the left, whereas yours and mine just turns the volume all the way down. So yeah, we have the original model while I think he has the current one.

Do you have the older one that has the power switch on the amp and speaker wires that plug into the satellites? That may be the difference; I think the new model is powered on and off by the control pod. I'm not sure though.
