  1. Thanks Dave, Yes, I do feel very lucky to have musicians like them as friends and even teachers. When they play, it's magic enough to get me (as well as the other fans you heard) to stay out late on a Tuesday night and pay the price at work on Wednesday. It would really be cool to hear what the cube can do in the same club- I'll bet it would be killer! Here is what I used: http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4/index.php Just a little mastering with the Sonar plugins and viola! You can record in formats ranging from mp3 (good for lectures and such) up to 96/24. The ones you heard were recorded at 44.1/24, and I did a couple at 96/24 as well. The nice thing is, you can also plug some condenser mikes into this puppy and it supplies phantom power. When recording a bass track, I usually get a bunch og RFI into the pickups, especially from computer monitors. With this thing, I can load in a stereo track and add tracks, like the bass, while sitting on the floor in my livingroom away from walls with electrical lines and monitors...it's much cleaner. Another litle advantage is that I could play something recorded in 96/24 without lugging my computer into my KHorn room by plugging it into the preamp! Which reminds me, I want to download a few more of your files and play them that way...
  2. Yes, I tend to come and go in spurts, depending on time and what projects I'm involved with. I need to loose my day job. Problem is, I have an expensive hobby! I'm back to playing the bass with some friends and a bit of keyboards, so it's rehearsals and then recording, mastering, etc.. I listened to the Foster recordings and enjoyed them- very smooth sounding. But it was on headphones, so later this week I'll burn them to CD and listen on the SET and Horns.I'll download more of your files as well. I am taking a recording seminar at a local studio, which means that I am able to compare the sounds of different mikes and preamps that I normally don't have access to.I found myself drawn the sound of some tube mikes.....must be something to putting a preamp stage right up in there close to the source that works well. I you get a chance, download the file that's linked in my Jazz Lover's post. It is a live recording, but I think you'll be surprised at what was used to make it.
  3. I primarily listen to jazz, jazz fusion, progressive rock, etc.. It don't get better than that! Jazz, being made up of a good number of acoustic instruments, sounds great played on tube equipment. I really like the sound of SET for jazz and classical. There are times when I want to crank the volume a bit more than SET can handle in which case I use the Scott 222D. It can handle those intense moments (like the climax of Close to the Edge, or the bass pedal moments on early Genesis...or even those killer bursts in the Firebird) with a bit more ease. It's amazing how loud 4 watts can get with Klipsches :-)
  4. Hey Dave! Congrats! It should be interesting. I'm downloading your Foster file now. Have you retired the Wami?
  5. I manage to float in and out here from time to time. You might remember that I mentioned a local jazz band I see who are just killer musicians. Well, in this post, I will bring them to you via a downloadable link. Ron gave me his permission to share this live performance. Unfortunately, there is a bit of clipping going on in the bass. Any guesses how this recording was done? Here's the link: https://download.yousendit.com/R3oyWUh0bThZY1JFQlE9PQ Good for 6 more days. The band is the Ron Kobayashi Trio with vocalist Debi Ebert, and they perform at Steamers in Fullerton the first Tuesday of each month. If you are in the neighborhood, let me know, we'll hook up! BTW This is a wav file []
  6. Yeah, the crossover change was planned. The Amp was unplanned [] I gotta say, the sound is growing on me. I will ask my friend Todd to bring over his Don Allen SET for comparison. I wish we had a pair of VRDs as well, and perhaps the VRDs will be my ultimate goal....
  7. Yeah, my right ear took a while to get over the trip. I've started doing some listening, but not too long before the new purchase, I changed the squawker attenuation on the crossover as most of the new stuff is recorded bright, so it's gonna be harder to tell what's the amp and what's the new setting... but I'll get some done soo, hopefully.
  8. Glen's description is correct. I left the KHorns on the shorter wall for a few days and the loss of bass was too much, so even it the French door thing was not an issue, I would have moved them back as I did. What's funny about the imaging issue is that I believe it's not just the room, but the recording as well. Years ago when I lived in Chicago, I had the horns in the basement, and I remember listening to Chicago (the band) and just closing my eyes and the music didn't seem to come from two speakers- it filled the room. When I play the same music, I can hear the same imaging. For some reason, horn music seems to image better. Maybe part of it is because engineers in those days used hard panning more than those of today (meaning some instruments might have been placed in extreme left or right positions). I'll be doing some more listening...maybe it's time for another get together [] As to the drop in some of the lower frequencies, or upper bass because of the out of corner position, there is some very deep resonance now and it sounds pretty good to my ears. Maybe I'll get tired of it. One of these days, I wanna hear some LaScallas []
  9. A few months ago, I had a few hornheads from Audio Asylum over along with Bruce Edgar, who immediately noticed that my imaging sucked because my horns were very far apart (like about 20 ft). We placed them on the shorter wall and everyone agreed that the imaging was right on. But after they left, and I started living with them that way, aside from the fact that their placement was impractical because of some French doors that the TV would block, and I watch music DVDs, I noticed a drop in the bass response. I suppose that my ears got used to the big hole in the middle and din't mind that, but if you loose the bass, what would I need KHorns for? So I moved them back. But I moved one speaker out of the corner, though still along the longer wall, but closer together by about 4 feet. They don't look as good and still have that massive bass, though on some frequencies it is just a bit less from the out of the corner-horn, yet on some other frequencies, it's almost as if the extra space boosts that bass range. Over all, it's better. I've retained the great K-Horn bass and improved the imaging. And if you look at them from the couch, they don't look too bad (till you get up and walk towrds the side of the room where the moved horn is. But the wife is not complaining, so neither am I [8-|]
  10. I would have loved that! Next time I go somewhere, I'll post it. Just think, we could have tried out the amp on the JubScalas. And I didn't mind the cold one bit (except while walking). It was in teh 90s here today and already I miss the colder weather. I guess as I get older, I can't stand the heat as well. I'm sure mom-in-law wants us to see her again, so another trip is very possible. Maybe I'll find another great deal there, like a Marantz 8B for 300 bucks? [8][8][8]
  11. Imagine my surprise when I found it there! OTOH, I had a friend over from Canada and he needed something from a drug store, so I took him to our local one. As we walked through the liquor isle, he froze in his tracks and couldn't believe his eyes, "Alcochol in a drug store?!" he said. Hey Islander, where are you? We were in Victoria. We could have had a Klipsch gathering, hehe!
  12. I missed a few good concerts, so I was the dud...last fall John McLaughlin toured...missed him. This past Friday Return to Forever played in LA, but we just returned from vacation in Victoria, Canada, so that didn't work out...I'm afraid to look to see who else will be around that I'll miss [:S]
  13. Hey Dave! I'm thinking it's really an integrated amp/line stage. Those are three inputs, no phono. I'm not really familiar with these tubes, but it's got a pair of 6P3P (6L6G) 4 6N3 and a 6E2. The 6E2 has what looks like a tuning lamp acting as a power meter...looks like it's a cosmetic thing...
  14. White gloves are to the left of the amp..
