If you can solder a Dynaco offers a lot of bang for the buck. I have one and have loved tinkering with it. There is a dedicated Dynaco website on audioasylum where you can explore options. With some work you can have an incrdible amplifier for around $1K all in. 25 watts.
I am a massive Bottlehead fan, so if you can solder but are not comfortable with a Dynaco and what it takes to revamp it, those kits are really easy. If SET isn't your bag, DIYhifi has some push pull kits for KT-88 which will give you a lot of power and good support on the forum. All of my suggestions are based on doing it yourself, but it really isn't that hard. Just some thoughts.
