  1. Thanks ! you mention cabinets, I have been thinking about building a set of Cornwall clones, I saw the post by Bob Crites about building a speaker test box.

Then found the Cornscala project located under updates and modifications page 3

Man this looks like a sweet project, absolutley beautiful.

  2. I'm working on getting the parts list together, I'm close to parts express so the caps are local, the large inductors are pretty pricey.
I'd really like to get 2 new transformers, so i can keep my original xovers intact. But cost aside this looks like a pretty cool project.
I bought the Herseys at a flea market with a receiver for $31 so Im still in pretty good shape, I did sink $200 into redoing the cabinets, so im still ahead.

The only complaint about my Herseys is the mid/high is pretty forward sounding, and my room is about 14x14. So im hoping I can get the Herseys ballanced and smooth.
I have an engineer friend that is basically a filter guru, he wants to have a look at what im working on also, he is more of an Edgar horn and JBL woofer guy.
His comment is with the Hersey, tweek the xover and add a decent woofer/sub and they will really perform.

I did chenge the xover caps with aerovox caps that I got from Bob Crites, definite improvment there, I liked the oil caps better than the Solens I tried.
My Herseys are running K22 woofers, K53 mids and K77m tweeters.

  3. Hello
Im reading up on the ALK page and was wondering if anyone has tried the ALK crossover under DIY for the Cornwall but adaptable to the Hersey ?
Any comments out there on this ? I have rebuilt my E2 crossovers with oil caps from Bob Crites and non polars from Parts Express.
After the cap change the speakers are much better the levels on the drivers are matched channel to channel.
But, after looking at Al's crossovers I'm wondering if they might better the original crossovers.

  4. Guys

After a few days working I have the Herseys done, the cabinets are in light quarter sawn oak.

I did a true Tung oil finnish. The first 4 were 50/50 tung oil and turpentine the final coats were straight tung oil and hand rubbed out, the finnish is satin with a soft gloss.

I have the original risers, but can't decide whether to use them or not.

Now the last thing to do is fresh grille cloth and Klipsch emblems.

The old gals look like new, they were well worth it....

    Im running Fairchild 412/Rega RB300/Shure M97 or Thorens TD124/SME 3009/Denon DL103

    Music Reference RM5

Leak Stereo 50 or Perreaux PMF 1150b

    sweet sweet sweet

  5. Thanks, I thought about the veneer choice for quite a while, looking at some of the exotics, then cherry, walnut and oak.

The oak is very fine grain, quarter sawn lite oak. Im contemplating either a satin poly, or just going with an oil finish.

I need to give that some thought, the finish sand will be 400 grit, so they will be very smooth.

Hopefully, I will have them done in a week or so.

  6. hello

The corners were fixed after the photos, so far the cabinets are all done, any damage or dents are fixed.

I dropped the cabinets off at a cabinet maker buddys for veneer, they are going to be done in quarter sawn oak, with a light oil finish.

I am planning on redoing the grills with new #17 cloth.

The faces and backs are going to be satin black, new cinch terminals.

  7. I am doing the sanding and dent filling and man was there quite a few layers of paint and paint over dirt.

I am taking photos as I go so there will be photos, I have one box speakers and crossover removed and sanded down to the plywood, and hopefully will get the second box done tonight.

I have a cabinet maker that will be doing the veneer work, I want the Hersey's to look like new.

I want to have a look at the veneer, he has cherry, oak, and walnut but can get just about anything I want.

    Then new grill cloth.

  8. Hello

I'm also in the process of restoring a pair of Herseys so i'm looking for enough grill cloth to do both speakers.

If anyone out there has enough please let me know, the cloth is available but the minimum is 5 yds.

    Possibly a group purchase ?

The Herseys I have had several coats of paint, grills and all so they are being sanded and any damage repaired, then will be veneered.

Luckily the speakers are all fine, the last thing to do is to re cover the grills with new cloth and emblems, they should look like new.
