  1. After 6 months of watchin' and listenin' to Bluray movies, right now my pick for the absolute most "information" given through the side surrounds is the HBO series "Generation Kill." It's a 3 DVD set with 7 episodes and I've never ever never heard more stuff from the sides. The language though is terrible, I'd give it a rating of "Soft X." But you can't believe all the tracer bullets comin' at you from the side! Unreal!

  2. I don't mean at all to be a thread-stealer, but is there enough "7.1 stuff" out there to be gung-ho about setting up a 7.1 HT? I don't know if I've ever even seen a DVD that had "7.1 Surround Sound" on it; but I admit, I haven't been around much.

  3. It's really easy for a hobby like building an HT to become a money-pit obsession. We've had pleasure horses for years and I've seen it with that hobby big time also; it was always trying to find one faster, smoother, bigger front end, and on and on. The total secret to all this is WANTING WHAT YOU HAVE, NOT HAVING WHAT YOU WANT!! You've been a great help online to me Mark; I wish you only, only the best.

  4. This is the way "timbre" was explained to me: Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion can both sing "middle C"; the same indentical frequency, the same identical note. "Timbre" is what makes Streisand sound like Streisand and Dion sound like Dion. Is that "it" in a nutshell?

  5. I did exactly as you guys said..................eliminated the center and surround channels, found and "pushed" the "Pure/Direct" button, put in the Sugarland CD that I like so much, and..............................holy mackerel, Andy! You close your eyes, and you'd swear Nettles was sittin' on the couch with her guitar. THANKS GUYS!!!

  6. I would tend to agree with BBR. If I were any sort of audiophile, I probably wouldn't be happy with mixing heritage gear with a reference center and sub; but it sounds just fine to me. I don't know about trying it with other brands. What kind of Klipsch center do you have?

  7. Thanks for all the input guys. Yeah, I do need to read the Marantz manual; I haven't used 1/10 of the features I paid for I'm sure. AND I ain't gonna use 'em tomorrow nite either 'cause Netflix sent me " The Book of Eli" finally. And I'm gonna crank it up in 5.1 and kick back. JB's post ain't gonna ruin this baby for me! I love this forum guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Ya know, Wuz, you coulda "bit" this bullet in February when you were helping me put my HT together, and I'd have this nice 7001 instead of a 5004 and have enough left over for a few Bluray dics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whatta they say? Timin' is everything?!

  9. I feel like an idiot, but I've heard there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers, so here goes. In my HT when I want to listen to just music (CD player and it has only analog outs), it plays the center channel. I like the RC 64 fine for movies (I've got it "souped-up" enough that it keeps up with my K-horns OK), but for music I like just 2 channel stereo on the K-horns. If I put the CD in the Bluray, it plays the 2 channel stereo which I want. Yeah, I know you're asking, "what's the damn problem?" but my analog CD player holds 5 discs and so I don't have to do change any dics for a good while. What do I do to cut out the center when I play the analog CD? I've played with the 5004 Marantz I've got a few timess and haven't figured it out yet?????????????

  10. I got a Samsung DVD/VCR unit a few years back, even before I put together my HT. It does a good job, but can now get the same thing for less than half of what I got this unit for I betcha. You can record and playback both DVD and VCR or dub your old tapes to DVD. We don't use it much anymore because we got the Bluray virus. They are just about giving these types of player/recorder units away now.

  11. Is 3 Mbs/sec download speed fast enough to justify an upgrade from my Samsung BD P1500 to a model that will stream Netflix? What would be the quality of the pic on my HDTV with this marginal speed? Thanks gang for any input from your experiences.

  12. Our internet speed is only 3 megs/sec so I've forgotten about tryin' to stream Netflix to the TV. Yeah, I totally agree with you on choosing the hottest video and sound movies; but like you say, if the source is really good, then I can hack it, if the source is bad but the A/V is good ( as in 2012) I can really hack that.

  13. Marantz and Klipsch I think sound good together. There's a lot of good A/V receivers out there; Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer to just name a few. You can go "factory refurbished" or used to save some bucks. Get to looking and good luck!!!!!!!!!! Whatever you decide on, I figure you'll like; don't start "second-guessing" yourself when you make your mind up.

  14. Makes sense to me, Bill. I've not noticed the Paladium ads I guess. I do like that P 27 C though; you saw where the gentleman had one between 2 jubes and was really happy. Made me want one.......................yeah, I know, the madness never ends.
