In the 50's my father acquired plans to build a Klipschorn and he built one. I remember him saying that until the unit was complete, there was no way of knowing if it was built correctly! Anyway, it worked (he never got around to building a second one). Almost every Sunday we had listening sessions in the living room.
He loved all types of music and he sat us down to "just listen" (no coloring, puzzles, etc.). He loved jazz the most, but I think E. Power Biggs emanating from the Klipsch was the most fun for him.
My father passed away in 1980 and after a few years my mother moved the Klipsch out to the garage. Now my mother is going to assisted living and I'm in the process of helping her move out of the house that she has lived in since 1962. I have fond memories of the Klipsch but cannot keep it. It was in the garage for a long time (not sure if any critters are living in it, although it was wrapped in a protective tarp) and it hasn't been tested to see if it still works, but I thought that it may be a great learning tool for someone - a DIY enthusiast perhaps? I do not want to see it go into the dumpster. I decided to contact this board rather than listing it on Craigslist as I figured I would find the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable fans here.
I found the plans yesterday - it looks like my father meticulously copied them in his own hand. I will scan and print out the diagrams that can go with the Klispchorn. My uncle was an engineer affiliated with M.I.T. and I think that my father copied the plans that he had (my uncle also built one). Another uncle became envious about of all of this sonic awesomeness, but he had more money to spend, so he bought a pair of Klipschorns! More stories followed about cracked walls, etc.
Anyway, if you've made it this far a huge thanks to you! I took some photos but they are too dark, so I will post photos (or links to photos) sometime next week when I return.
The wood is finished in a very light color. I just realized that I left the plans at my mother's house, so if they listed a particular model number I'll post that info next week, too.
