  1. Years ago, I had the listening experience with the following CD's (I supose you have heard them...) and not with my current analogue set-up...

I had those records in CD's and when came in my hands the vinyl pressings, I imediatelly exchanged them with the vinyls...

They are 16 bit - linear cuts, as I read on the records' cover technical notes... I have an explanation why this is happening... but I would prefer to ask if any other fellow had the same experience with me with digitally remastered LPs...

  2. Hi,

Probably the most favourite subject between audiophiles around the world is the on-going "fight" between analogue and digital. Since the introduction of the CD in 1981 and after some years of the digital predominance, digital seems to have hit the technological roof and analogue is making a strong come back in the last 10 years. Personally all over these years I have made my comparisons with various material and I have concluded them in a paper named at http://aca.gr/rec05_skal1.htm

But some people were telling me that my old Wadia 8/15 pair was technologically outdated and so the comparison was not fair, so I decided to organize in my listening room a blind test between a top digital (whatever that means...) and my analogue gear, with lots of people invited...

See the rest of this very interesting IMHO story here:

    I hope you enjoy it...

  3. Hi everyone,

In 10 days from now the “lunatic” members of the Audiophile Club of Athens will celebrate the 10th anniversary of... “Their Existence”... xe,xe,xe…

Robert Deutsch from STEREOPHILE is right now touring with his wife around the “Land of Gods” and during his last free day is going to join us in a hotel in Athens, where we are going to honor 3 Greek High End Manufacturers: Analysis, TLA & Ypsilon (Members of the Club)!

    - http://aca.gr/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2499 (for Greek speaking) See all about it above and sorry for the inconvenience…

  4. Interesting- I liked the gent's views on music and the purpose of their extravagent systems. I think a bit too much emphasis on money and turntables (note no speaker discussion at all).

But someone show that guy with the red vinyl how to properly use a Zerostat please!

And what was that symphony piece played at the end? I loved watching the fellows listening to the music- very cool film!

    - Composer: Elgar

    - CELLO CONCERTO in E Minor Op. 85, completed Aug 1919

    - 1st Movement: Adagio - Moderato

    - Orchestra: London Symphony Orchestra

    - Conductor: Sir John Barbirolli

    - Cellist: Jacqueline Du Pre

    - Recorded: August 19, 1965 at Kingsway Hall - London, EMI ASD 655.

It was played in my house, when Ken was filming and I had chosen it, due to the extra ability of the ribbons to play cello music.

  5. Thank you Michael,

No problem at all, in fact I am glad I have caused an interesting discussion.

Now just for the info for the members of this forum, I want to explain how this documentary initiated.

Ken Barnes, a film maker, living in London (Canadian origin) send us a proposal, a part of which I am quoting:

    DOCUMENTARY FILM PROPOSAL<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    FOR

    THE AUDIOPHILE CLUB OF ATHENS

    TITLE:

I propose two possible titles for this film (or one title in two parts).

    Either

    'The Audiophile Club of Athens'

    OR

'The Search for the Holy Grail of Audio'

    OR

    a combination of both.

    PURPOSE OF FILM:

This film is a project first and foremost intended as the main component of my MA Screen Documentary programme at Goldsmiths College, University of London. The success of this film will determine, to a very large part, the grade of my coursework.

    CONTENT OF FILM:

My initial reason for making this film comes from my own interest in music, the special quality and feeling of well-reproduced music and the world of the audiophile. On a more universal level, I hope that this film will convey the passion of its characters as they strive for the elusive 'perfect' system and what that means to them. Sometimes passion cannot be realized without compromise or sacrifice. If this film can somehow inspire the audience to find their own passion, I feel it will have succeeded in its goal.

(Without knowing more details about specific characters and potential events or narrative elements, I cannot give much more information about content at present. Please understand this.)

    VISUAL CONTENT:

I love cinematography as much as great music and will attempt to portray the audio systems of your group as artistically as possible. I think this will be a big part of the film, so I am especially hoping to find amazingly designed components and speakers and try to compose and light them in beautiful ways. If some members have especially beautiful rooms for their systems, that would also contribute to the look of the film. I know that room design is itself a major, though sometimes neglected, component of hi fidelity. How members compromise acoustics with comfort, beauty and wife/partner approval (or not!) should be another interesting element of the film. In addition, the romantic and historical backdrop of Greece itself will surely add to the visual appeal and texture of the film.

As you can understand, he didn't want to advertise the Club but to show the extra-ordinary face of our hobby. I am sure he could show some more of the software and not that much of hardware and money and things like that.

I don't know if he succeeded 100% but IMHO it is not bad, not bad at all.

I will put the links again (we have uploaded in a second server) for members that are lazy to go to the first page...

  6. Hi,

'MEGARON' Music Hall in Athens-Greece has started a series of recordings of Greek Classical Music Composers and the works that 6 members of A.C.A. witnessed recorded, were composed by Manolis Kalomiris (1883-1962) 'TRIPTICHON' (composed 1936), Symphony PALAMIKI and "2 GREEK DANCES".

STATE ORCHESTRA OF ATHENS (ASO) was conducted by Byron Fidetzis. Musical recording assistant was Philippos Tsalahouris. The recording was performed by Themis Zafiropoulos and the recording team of the 'Megaron' Recording Center.

This is also an historical moment, since this recording session was the first official recording towards discography of the best and oldest Greek Symphonic Orchestra!

Read all about it in: aca.gr/event05-6_megaron.htm

    (extremelly recommended for serious audiophiles...)

    Subjects included:

    - About the Play...

    - The Recording Center Installation...

    - The Play & the Orchestra...

    - The Recording of the Orchestra...

    - 'MEGARON' Recording Equipment...

  7. OK Max,

Go to my paper again and read my remark about the Linn LP12 t/t I had, 7 years ago, against the Wadia combo and a tune recorded by Linn. They are equal as far as price more or less. I state there that there was on particular tune that it was better on CD back then.

One, only one out of 25!!! (or make it 15 since I didn't have all of them at that time...)

I just try to be practical Max, that's why i say "no more technical crap..."

As far as music of today's youngsters, well... Thanks, but no thanks...

  8. That's very good my dear friend!!!

So you have more to offer to this topic about specific Classical works, Jazz tunes and other music that you own in both vinyl and CD's (I suppose you have more than me).

In other words, please tell us that...

    - with such and such I prefer vinyl

    - with such and such I prefer CD or SACD or HDCD or whatever.

But please, BE SPECIFIC about certain music, not just words!!!

We can wait for a week, since this I am asking, is not a matter of seconds to reply...

  9. Hi all,

Maybe this is not exactly a music review, since it involves comparisson between 2 source formats of various types of Music, but it is not exactly an audio... paper either. Never the less, the music I am referring to is very interesting, no matter if you have it recorded on vinyl or on an aluminum disc...

The purpose of doing this is to face this old analogue vs.digital "war", from the point of the final acoustical experience and pleasure, listening to both formats - which is what matters anyway - and not from a technical point of view. We've had enough of this...

    Please visit: aca.gr/rec05_skal1.htm

    Sorry to trouble you

  10. Max,

I just want to say thanks to you and Tony for the wonderfull evening and i just want to admit (i am always saying that) that the more i grow old, the more i realise that i know nothing about Hi Fi (some call it High End)...

Reason is that i moved my left speaker 21 cm to the wall (maximum i could go) and you were damn, damn, damn... right. (I thought Genesis were sounding better not far away each other, due to side reflections...)

For soundstage width, 21cm equaled to... well..., almost 21m (for classical music...) and still, speakers are completelly absent... and still my 3 kids can pass through, between the left speaker and the side wall safely... they are grown up now)

I say no more but thanks...
