  1. Have my old Dual 704 on my workbench now. Need to see if it works and if yes, a cleanup. Also a Peachtree crate packed with vinyl. I'm hoping to get to this project soon. Gradually doing some finishing touches on the basics first. Everything's in an open back, glass front cabinet under TV. Flashlight's a pain in the ***. Picked up a 'Hammerhead' book light yesterday at Barnes & Noble. Perfect!
  2. Thanks to all for the suggestions and methods! I'll get busy building my library after visits online to learn a little about FLAC, EAC, Foobar and other players etc, to get a basic handle on things. Looking forward to the fun. Thanks again. This site is great!
  3. Is ripping CD's to my hard drive via the same computer built-in player ok or do I need some kind of external player (for quality)? At this point, all I care about is building my library via CD to hard-drive.
  4. muel, you've got that right! Work on getting the music first, the rest later. No hurry here just wondering things as I go/a little overloaded with order of this process. All advice here very worthwhile and clears things up. Thanks to all...now I can relax & proceed.
  5. I like the idea of this service. Do you like it because of perceived superior sound quality or availability of pretty much any music-at-will for subscribers? Confused here due to some feel Nexus (or any similar) playback is inferior. I'm finding I'm ok with the current sound. Maybe I just don't know any better (yet).
  6. I'm 59 yet new to all of this digital to analog stuff. Will have to learn about DAC's and determine if not-best sound pisses me off. Not there yet. Could you please compare sound quality using the 546 USB with flash drive mp3's vs Nexus IHeart via headphone jack? Disregard any needed volume increase when using Nexus (if any). If different, how? What do I listen for? Right now for my expectations, both seem to sound acceptable.
  7. Regarding the 546. Just got it from Crutchfield. The 516 specs different. If USB is never used, would the 516 be extremely close to the same thing sound-wise? Exchange for 516?
  8. Sound quality from nexus is fine for TuneIn and iHeart as background and turn up a little from time to time. How would using Spotify be hooked up? Using Nexus? PC is not near Audio stuff. Would prefer operating devices from audio gear location area.
  9. My Andoid is a Nexus7 tablet. No phone. Per muel, NG. Don't get it. Sorry to be such a bone head. Explain just a little.
  10. Have a PC. Budget isn't unlimited. Not obsessed with highest quality. I like to start with what would do a very nice job/how to do it and what's it gonna cost, then go backwards from there. You mention: "Using the headphone jack from the Android device is going to hurt your sound quality... I'd say this is where you want to pay some attention." What do mean by 'pay some attention'? For now, headphone jack setup will do for device-as-tuner low as background and for company to play with. FYI...Last night, heard Scorpions 'Still Loving You'. I'm thinking the Scott would love that. Hungry to hear that cranked on my system...it's been quite a while. That's what started all of this.
  11. In today's techno world, thought I'd ask those who know WAY more than me. I'd like to round out my music collection. Quite lost as to how to go about this with the resources available today. I'd guess I say I'm not super critical but for sure better quality does sound better. Here's what I have for gear (very satisfied so far): Heresy1 HSM's/E XO's/ with Crites recap kits. JBL (ok for now) 10" sub. Scott 299 w/deluxe rebuild by Craig. New NAD C546BEE with USB input. Has internal DAC (all I really know about DAC is what it stands for and is good to have). Nexus7 Tablet. I use headphone jack as can't get output otherwise. Currently TuneIn and IHeart...nice to be able to do that. I use an A/B switch for either Tuner or Tablet. Sound is fine but output is a little lower so have to turn volume up some. I read that the NAD USB can be used for Audio with a Flash drive or Apple product. My wife has an iPod mini but does't have music on it/doesn't care either way about this. So, do I download? Google Play? Buy CD's? No clue here. Please keep any reply in simple terms. I'm willing to learn but have to start from scratch with this process. Thx, Joe
  12. Just got a shipment of 'superaudio' coat hangers and duct tape. OK to use those?
  13. OK. If there was a sonic problem with the wrap, most would have pointed that out. I've moved them from the heat and plan to change out later. Maybe they'll live another day...they're 15 years old! Thanks to all.
  14. Hey derrickdj1, what's a MLP?
  15. I wondered about some kind of adverse 'Sonic Quality' or other electrical condition. Won't be storing the Supra this way once it's installed just to be sure. Ha! You should have seen the jumbled mess before! Again, will eliminate once replaced. Yes it is. Pulled away a few inches so no bad dreams. Autocalibration? Is that's something an amp does does? Using a Scott 299 Gen2 just refurbed by Craig/NOS (great).
  16. Pic shows excess Monster Cable which I'm currently using. It's quite old but as you can see, not oxidized. There are 2 bundles, L & R. Hated to cut it to two equal pieces based on longest run which is about 35 feet. I would still have to store 25' of L side which is only a 10' run. Planning to replace it with Supra Classic 1.6 (70' cut in half). The black box is a sub for PC speakers I use for the TV. Any reason excess cable shouldn't be kept tidy this way? If what's shown is a no-no, why?
  17. Ability to tailor would be a nice feature. An 850 or higher. It's settled (for now).
  18. Off Topic I know... Here's one of mine. Yes, upside down per DeanG. Wood below it is home made mount. Other photo is recessed connector panel. Other than the panel and shape, don't see a lot of potential 'Industrial' applications or variation. I'm original owner from '82. Panel says HS-M so not definitive per your question. Standard E crossovers of the era. Would guess mine were intended for the home market...life on the road would be tough. Other HSM's were tricked out to take more of a beating. I like mine sound-wise for what Heresy's are and seems not many around like these. Just FYI.
  19. Nexus 7. I'll have to learn more about FiiO adapter. I'm learning the Sangean can be a problem somehow because the HD cannot be disabled or turned off.
  20. Heresy Slant Mount. Using a sub too. What about bass/treble turnover feature on 850 & higher? May keep the door open for a smaller x50 if this feature isn't very useful.
  21. Powering just my HSM's, I don't know how much is too much. Any such thing? The SX-850 looks to be the lowest power with bass/treble turnover. Useful feature? A receiver isn't needed now but will keep an eye out for those gathering dust in somebody's garage. Suggestions about the 850 or is any x50 what to watch for?
  22. Starting to look. I understand in the house FM is said by some to be a thing of the past, or soon to be. Doesn't bother me. I'm not expecting stellar sound quality but might as well get something decent. You here know way more than me. Some guidance please: FYI: NOSVALVE is doing a complete recon of an acquired Scott 299 right now. That will be my amp. HSM's & sub my speakers. Satisfied with this setup. Tuner: Tube? Modern? Tablet? Local PBS has HD. Never heard HD but seems opinionated. The only HD capable tuner seems to be a Sangean HDT-1 which Sangean says discontinued due to lack of sales. Can find on Ebay. Tablet can do internet including IHeart, TuneIn, PBS with HD, Sirius. Hook tablet to Scott via tablet headphone jack to amp Tape in. Vintage tube...can't get answers if tubes are somehow better (sound quality or other reason) besides match the era of the amp and the 'vintage factor'. Tabletop like Tivoli One. Nice looking. Modern with vintage styling. There is some benefit to having a tuner that stays with the amp rather than get the Tablet to plug in each time. Is it OK to keep RCA jacks plugged in to Amp and cover Pin Jack end with snug tubing? I'm leaning toward finding a Sangean HDT-1 for local and using the Tablet for others if desired. Paralysis of analysis here. Comments? Thx much, Joe
  23. All Posts very helpful. If I understand correctly, any SX- x50 or SX-xx50 would be the series of choice based on whatever your wattage needs are. Right?
  24. In the SX or Silver series...many models. Is there some meaning to the numbering of the series? Just when I think I see a pattern, poof! If there's a Site that discusses this, have only found generalizations.
  25. Sorry Rick but what is TT? Checking out that interesting-looking Tivoli.
