  1. I would step up the Denon food-chain and go refurbished. Something like this would be a pretty large upgrade over the AVR-2100:

I am a big Yamaha fan and if you don't need all of the newest bells and whistles, this would be a killer receiver:

While those both look like amazing recievers, they are a bit more than what I wanted to spend

How about the Denon AVF-X3000?  "Variable Multi-Zone Pre-Amp Outputs Yes Z2"

  2.

I was hoping to get away without a pre-amp with the 2.1 setup

You can look at integrated amps for a 2.1 for a turn key solution.  Be sure it has a sub out, or were you thinking of just using a receiver in 2 channel mode?

No, I would want a sub out on the reciever.  For now the 2.1 turn key option would be the most appealing while still allowing me to upgrade to 5.1 while adding an amplifier in the near future.   I certainly want good sound quality, but don't consider myself anything of an audiophile (which should be evident by my lack of knowledge).

So I need to look for a reciever with an integrated amp and sub out.  Is there an minimum wattage you would suggest?

  3. Welcome!

I have had Onkyo, Integra and Denon receivers. I have been happy with all of them. Right now, I am partial to the Denon/Marantz lines. For subs there are a lot of options. I have built my own in the past. Currently have a pair of Klipsch. There are several brands that are good.

My advice would be to let everyone know your budget for your receiver and the sub(s) and you will have plenty of excellent advice from the community here and lots of first hand experience. Not sure where you are located, but I know a person close to me is selling an excellent Klipsch sub.

Good luck and enjoy the sickness...

I don't really have a budget.  That being said, I'm looking for a relatively cost effective reciever that will supply sufficient power the RF5s

I was hoping to get away without a pre-amp with the 2.1 setup and then will buy an amp when I upgrade to 5.1.

I'm located in Ohio but travel to the Missouri area for business often.  Does he have his Kilpsch sub posted somewhere?

  4. I talked him down to $500.  Assuming everything sounds well, I'm picking them up tomorrow.

What reciever and sub would you recommend to pair with the RF5s?

The home theater room will be used mostly for movies, video games, sports, and music...probably in that order.  I eventually am going to upgrade to a 5.1 system, but probably never go to 7.1

  5. Hi all,

I've started shopping for home theater speakers and came across some Klipsch RF-5 speakers on craigslist.

I wanted to ask the community if these speakers are worth the $600 asking and if you'd recommend them for my 20x15' home theater room?  Or should I go with something newer?  $600 for my two front speakers is the price range I'm looking for.

    Thanks!
