I wonder if your TV audio setting could be the culprit. Check that your TV output is set to PCM.
Why would you set tv output to PCM? For 5.1 you'll want it set to bistream to pass through LPCM from an external source or any multi-channel surround from an app. PCM will force the audio to be down-mixed to stereo which defeats the purpose of a 5.1 system.
