  1. I just wish record shops in the USA where like th ones in Europe (Germany at least). I was stationed in Germany for 3 years in the 80s. Every saturday after payday I would head to the record shops in Frankfurt. The big difference there is that you can listen to anything before you buy it. That's right, ANYTHING! Germans where not big on tape so most was vinyl and later CDs. I would pick out a big stack of records and discs and head to the counter to listen. You could listen to short snipets of tracks to the whole thing if you wanted. I discovered alot of great stuff I would have never heard otherwise. I also discovered alot of crap to avoid at all costs. By evening I would be heading back to the baracks with lots of new music and alot less DM.

BTW what turntable are you using in your system?

You guys remember when MADE IN JAPAN used to indicate a quality electonic product?

I remember when it used to mean "cheap junk" and if you wanted anything of quality you wanted Made in the USA or european made.

    Times change though.

  3. I was listening to the ol' Eico ST70 last night when the right channel cut out and I could smell something hot! After pulling the plug and opening up the bottom I was greeted with a mess of melted wires. I think that one of the 7591s is toast too. Looks like it is time for that rebuild I have been planning. Film at 11.

  4. Kelly, first off, if it is a machine I can control it. It doesnt matter if it spits out metal, plastic, cheese, or finished product in a box. I will make it happen.

Right now I am a Computer Network Tech making computers talk to each other.

The right machine in the wrong hands is worse than the wrong machine in the right hands.

  5. First off, major apologies to eapiel for taking over your thread.

The only reason your ST-70 is sticking around is your Grandfather built it? This amp is thought of VERY highly, especially with a few mods here and there. I would ditch the front plate and make one out of neat hardwood with some interesting knobs. The output iron is very good. Besides the tube choice, it's a hard amp to beat, surely far better than the new options when all working. To me, it's an ugly beast but a new face plate from a buddy woodworker (doesnt everyone have one of these friends) and you have a really cool option that sounds excellent. Would be a fun project.

As for the NAD 502, that is the NOTORIOUS problem with them. Almost EVERY model I know has had the display drop out. It's an ok piece but the treble purity is not the best and it's also a bit soft in the bass. IT isnt too hard on the ears, however. A first run Rega Planet would be a HUGE leap.

I didnt mean it that way with the ST70. I just will not use it as the main amp. The main reason being all the extra circuits and the 7591 tubes. BTW I am that wood worker Friend. 9.gif I wish I was that Metal worker friend

  6. Kelly,

I plan on replacing the 502 now that I have the display working again. I bought the 299 so I had a tube amp while I rebuild the Eico ST70 and visa versa. The only reason the ST70 is even sticking around is that my grandfather built it.

I also am on the lead for 4 Sylvania 6BQ5/EL84 Black plate NOS in original boxes. We shall see what comes, Klisch people first if I let them go.1.gif

  7. Klipsch magic. Gotta love it!

I hooked up my 35 watt NAD 304 for one last hurahh before I shipped it out. It was the the only time I had it on the KM-6s. I only took the volume knob to 12 o'clock and was at well over 100db. I also took a reading with the Onkyo receiver at 75% volume after I got the speakers. 116db!6.gif Brain damage level.6.gif

"PIMP" Please !! I surly hope that was just a tounge and cheek remark. I for one have said thank you so many times to kelly i've lost count. As far as i'm aware he's making skwat off all his hard work.

yes, "pimp" was meant as a good thing in this context. Sorry if I offended anyone, especially you, Kelly.

Kelly and Craig have both offered more than enough in information that most of us are indebted to them for audio life. In fact they are the ones most responsible for for renewing my tube addiction. (I originally came back to the Klipsch forum for info on home theater a few months ago, then ended up stumbling into here.)

    Thanks again guys.
