  1. Groomlake and dflip, -

I have concerns about the weakened Earl hitting the Bay of Fundy area of Nova Scotia after the record breaking heat wave. Would that pull it in or repel it? Once it's passed over Nova Scotia would it be on a bead for PEI?

You are both providing a valuable service. Thank you. Keep it coming. Slainte. Hamish
  2. Consider yourself lucky to find one. It could be older than you.

Back in the early days, Crowns did double duty - for home applications with the DC 150 pre-amps and professional sound reinforcement applications.

DC300s and DC300As served as the yeoman power amps for many concerts that we attended as kids. Many D60s and D75s were the bastion power amps for broadcast monitor applications. It's a testament to the robust 'built in the USA' quality that they're still around today. We grew up with the stuff. How many 1970 cars are still on the road today? These amps deserve a modicum of respect in their senior years.

In regards to your D60, if taken care of (caps & etc.), it should be around for another 50 years. Enjoy. Slainte.

  3. ditto to:

it doesn't matter what we think...what do you think? why do you ask? don't justify upgrades because of what others think...

And don't forget about the music - your friend until the end....

however...you've got enough various equipment to change things around from time to time and play around with it. I enjoy doing this a fair bit ... play around with equipment, speaker placement, moving furniture, putting the stuff in different rooms, ripping out walls, finishing attics, and when done I'm back at square one, then start over with a different CD - maybe Achtung Baby or No Line on the Horizon.

  4. Hi Owen, ditto to winchester.

It might be an idea to take your time and look for heritage (Khorns, LaScalas, Belles, Cornwalls, Heresy) and build from there. Quite a few forum members run Heritage HT systems. PSG is one, me for another. Heritage speakers are for life - like a best friend. The search and where it takes you is half the fun...... jeez- I'm lapsing into my Jim Morrison persona (OK - Val Kilmer doing Jim Morrison) .

And the Reference line of Klipsches offer full timbre matched, balanced HT speaker systems that are excellent for music as well as movies.

In the old days, there used to be a 3-2-1 ratio for audio equipment - 3 being $ spent on speakers, 2 being $ spent on amplification and 1 being $ spent on the head end.

Remember, music is your only friend until the end.

  5. high point - finding a Yamaha RX-Z1 for $200 at a pawn shop

low point - a couple months later - blowing the Yamaha RX-Z1 while playing a dts audio version of "The Captain and Me"

by the Doobie Brothers - complete with a thunderous ripping sound, a flash of orange/blue light and no kidding - a small

mushroom shaped cloud of smoke that hung over the receiver and stunk up the place.

  6. Hi Daddy,

About 10 years ago or so, there was a Monty Python reunion. They were all being interviewed with the recently dearly departed Graham Chapman's urn on the coffee table. Throughout the discussion, there are many references to Graham and reverent gazes to the table. Near the end of the interview, a typically pythonesque event happens. Guess what?

Have a great holiday. Slainte. Hamish

  7. and a Rollei 120 twin lens

    Hey Mallette,

That could be a Rollei T ( T for Tessar by Carl Zeiss) 2 1/4" twin lens reflex. It'll say on the front of the lens. One of the sharpest cameras ever made - definitely a keeper - Holds it's own with a Hasselblad. A great legacy for your kids. If you're hanging on to these cameras for 20 years, here's some storage tips.

If they have leather cases, get them out and into clean boxes with a couple of pouches of silica gel. Store in a dry place. The biggest enemy of cameras is fungus growing inside the lens. Fungus
makes the cost of disassembling and cleaning the lens more costly than
    the worth of the camera.

Occasionally, wind them and trip the shutter a few times at different speeds, then make sure the shutter is tripped and the winder mechanism is released before storing again. Rotate the aperture ring to keep it moving smoothly.

--- BTW --- the other posts about Angenieux lenses, Arriflex, Eclairs, CP-16s, etc - I know where there's a 16mm. Bolex EBM with an Angenieux 12-120 going cheap - oh yeah - it's got fungus on the lens - then a meathead camera tech tried to clean it, a C ring fell out inside, and scratched the inner element.

  8. Sounds good. And an oven recipe will go good around here when it's - 40 outside and too cold to bbq.

Here's my recipe with a Canadian flavour and Scottish flavour. In a large open pot, boil ribs in water and 1/2 cup of pickling spice. When mostly cooked, put the ribs on a bbq grill and baste with half maple syrup and half your favourite bbq sauce. Turn often to avoid burning. Oh yeah, the Scottish flavour - a couple neat drams of Bowmore 12 year old. Slainte. Hamish
