I've upgraded will give the older HTR and sub to my son, a college student. I'll buy him speakers as well, and have read about the RF 15, 25 and 35 series, but am not in a location to audition.

Does anyone know of the relative merits of the systems?

I probably should just tell him to go listen to them and see how they would fit.

Take a look at the Hitachi 51S500. I recently purchased the 57 after much research and am quite pleased. I would rate it "best in class". You should be able to find one on sale for around $2K.

BTW, be careful about judging the picture quality in showrooms. RPTVs ship from the factory in "torch" mode, ie. brightness, sharpness and contrast is elevated, so that they show better on the floor.

Finally, check out HDTVoice.com, a forum. It incorporates a separate forum area for each brand.

What guage speaker wire is suitable for connecting my new RF-7s? May I assume that Monster Wire such as that touted by Klipsch is not necessary?

I have the Pioneer Elite 49TXi receiver. Processors offering 8 discrete audio channels have been around for some time over here.

A relatively new format, 6.1 or EX uses 6 discrete channels plus a sub or LFE channel. As I understand it, one uses a center, right and left front, right and left surrounds perpendicular to the listening area and a single rear surround. The 7.1 format splits the rear channel into two equivalent signals. Each is then used by a THX Ultra II receiver to create a "phased" sound effect with the surround channel on its side.

A good short description of the various formats may be seen at pioneerelectronics.com. Download the manual for the 49TXi, their flagship receiver, and check near the back of the manual where THX post-processing is explained.

I have the R7s for the front, center and surrounds. I'd like to add a rear speaker to try the 6.1 and 7.1 formats, but space is severely limited behind our seating area. Our recliners are almost against the rear wall to facilitate viewing the widescreen.

Would it be feasible to put a RC 25 under the side table between our two chairs, angled upwards at, say, a 45 degree angle? At that position it would bounce the sound off the paneling which runs 36" up the wall from the floor.

Think this might work?
