You made it look like new. nice job! But it's still not aesthetically pleasing.
Did you get the gold cage? Put it on quickly and cover up all the industrial doo-hickies! That'll go a long way toward making that amp less of an eyesore. [H] I bet it sounds fantastic when restored to 100% though!

Is it me or are the amps just too non-descript? If I'm paying $4000 for a single amp I want it to look as great as it's supposed to sound. Those things are just boring to look at. [+o(]
What are the silly 1940's style gauges for? They look cheesy and like something that can be bought from a catalogue for $4.99 each.
The amp is a 305wpc but the gauges only go up to 200? They can't be WPC gauges then right? If I'm paying $4000 for a single amp I think it should have some sort of gauge on it that's not only accurate but looks great... maybe even a nice blue or red LED guage that shows your current WPC output.
Look at the McIntosh gauges?! Now, those are worthy of the price. They scream QUALITY.
Don't even get me started on the .99 toggle switches he used on these amps! Come on Bob... you could have done so much better than that on a $4000 amp.

I really don't see the problem with the guy reselling them. He paid the sellers asking price and didn't haggle. What he does with the speakers after that is no one business.
That patrician is ugly as heck and the khorn is the style without the decorative spacing between the upper and lower cabinets. Not pretty. [
] I don't blame him for trying to sell those hideous things. [H]I'll be surprised if he even doubles his money though. They're not special.

Cool old gear but aren't you going to end up spending a small fortune sending them out to NOSValves or someone similar to bring them back to proper working condition?
That's the problem with gear that is so old... you can't just plug it in and expect it to sound like it did 40 years ago. It's gonna take a lot of work (aka $$$$) to bring that gear "back". [*-)]
The sa300b is a nice amp (when restored to 100%) but it's meant to be heard and not seen. That's why they tuck it away in a cabinet. It is an ugly duckling! [:-*]

khorns made with lumber core, have a more breathtaking veneer grain pattern.
What else were khorns made with and why did it make their veneer more or less breathtaking? [*-)]
What years were different types of wood used?

I gotta start going to more estate sales like that seller! Check his recent completed sales for the almost $5000 MC240 amp that probably powered the khorns. Beautiful!

Here's mine. It's tough to see a the KLF-C7 center on the floor and the KSW15 subwoofer because they're black. You can't miss the 4 Khorns though! [

UPDATE: I sent Dave Lapoint a letter asking him if these Khorns were his. He wrote back saying that they were in fact his and that he "used them with a Kenwood receiver and monster wire... a long time ago." He signed the letter and signed a photo of him (that I included) from 1986... back when he owned these speakers. Pretty cool guy!
Here's a quick video of 4 walnut khorns in my smallish living room. I just got them all set up and the furniture moved around. Also, just hooked up my "new to me" Onkyo TX-N1000 receiver... which is daunting to set up! [8o|]

I love that emotiva stuff but I just can't bring myself to buy brand new. I'm one of those guys who likes to let the other guy take the huge depreciation hit. I don't buy new vehicles either. Maybe I'll buy some used emovtiva pieces next year. [Y]

Hi folks, I need to upgrade to a receiver from this decade. My current yamaha is pretty old. It doesn't have HDMIs even.
I want a top of the line, high power (150-170WPC) beastly receiver from a few years ago. It will need to have HDMI's. It doesn't have to be 7.1 because I'll NEVER use any more than
5.1. The heavier it is, the better. If it weighs 100 lbs I'd love it!I don't need internet radio or any of those other "fluff" features.
I will be powering 4 klipschorns (mains and rears) and a KLF-C7 center speaker. That's it. Just 5 speakers. I will not ever need anymore..
Can anyone make some reccomendations?

Dennie, I did rebuild this 1972 CT90. I have another one that I rebuilt also. I have a 3rd one that I expect to rebuild over the winter. I love these little CT90's. [

Hey people... it turns out that I can salvage one of the side grill panels. A little wood glue and some bracing and I think it'll be fine.
So, I only need one side panel.
If anyone has one let me know please.

I am not a DIY'er and would prefer to buy a pair if they're available. If I can't find a used pair... I assume I could buy them brand new from Klipsch? Does anyone know this for sure?

Hi folks, i just bought a pair of nice '86 khorns but 2 of the wood framed, cloth covered sides are pretty broken up. I'm hoping to find someone who can sell me a decent set.

An interesting story... these khorns were owned and used by Dave Lapoint who was a pitcher for the NY Yankees back in the 80's! In 2007, Dave gave them to his friend and I purchased them from the friend today. Pretty cool. [Y]
This makes 2 pairs of Khorns in my livingroom now!

Good post. I agree with you about Klipschorn owners also enjoying the ML sound. I really like my ML Vantatges. They're visually stunning and sounded better than the khorn when I was in the sweet spot. The problem was that the sweet spot for the Vantages was very small. They are too dependent of directionality. I had to basically be sitting dead center and fairly close or the MLs sounded completely lackluster... laughable even. Imagine trying to show off my fancy new speakers to friends/family and coralling them all into a small cluster on the couch directly in the tiny sweet spot. [
] How silly did they look... but it sure sounded nice!
Sometimes, I like to crank up the khorns and go downstairs and then outside to listen. I know that sounds strange but picture standing in line at a nightclub and how you hear and feel the music from inside. That's what I want to hear when I am cranking my system up. Doing that with the MLs resulted in almost no detail and not enough dBs to make even half of the "nightclub impact" as the pair of khorns.
I found the bass of the vantages to blow away the khorns in every way. Actually, I find the khorns lack of bass to be its one major downfall. It has the bass of an Altec A-7 or a panasonic "thruster". [:S] My cornwalls bass would best the vantages ...as I remember.
I've never heard the summits so I can't comment on them.
I ended up selling the one pair of speakers. Guess which ones I kept? Scroll to the video at the bottom of the post to find out.
My system is ever-changing. Here is the current system with an onkyo tx-nr1000 and VPI TT. Crank it up!
