  1. did you not have room to put something like RCWs in the side walls?
  2. Do you notice anything odd about the sound by having the rears in the ceiling?? Did you do 2,3 or 4. Been considering going the same route but putting some RCWs in the walls - even though they'd be a little high - seems like a better option. Considering a 6.1 option to aid in producing a more fluid sound field. What made you get the RCR5s over the RCR3s? Just wondersing - it's seems a lot of people mention that very little is needed from rear speakers but then put in large rears. Not that RCR5s are that big but I think i've read several posts where people had floorstanding speakers as rears.
  3. I was thinking of installing the RCWs on the "side" -didn't think of mounting them upside down. Putting them on the side i think would look better (think WAF) and help the sound (same idea as upside down). The problem was the rear channel (6.1 setup) - not sure installing in that manner to match the other two would introduce odd sounds. The stair case is fairly open in the front with just a railing for about half the stair case. Not sure about open it up more or underneath. Don't think the wife would go for it - plus one of the HVAC returns us there. I may be able to widen the entry way some but that may not help much. As for hanging the speakers as you mentioned - I think I'll run into the same WAF issues as i will with any surface mounted speaker. I like the suggestions though - lots of things I wouldn't have thought of. Going to continue to consider all options and at least toss the ideas out to the wife - i may wear her down eventually
  4. I'm going to skip the bookcase altogether. If I get the RB75s - they'll be in stands. I placed a few other posts in different forums - but i'm starting to drill down into actual speakers and placement on the rears. For the rears - there's only two options 1) RFR3/5 in the ceiling. 2) RCW3/5 in the side walls - except they'd be up high (at least 7 feet) and probably a little back from the sitting area. Trying to decide which might work best. Also, if a 6.1 config wouldn't help greatly. And whether 3s are fine or 5s are needed.
  5. ok - so some people do and some don't. But if you do - it does add some. So if I went with RB75s - can I just let the sub do more work? I know these are subjective questions - but when I got the dealer I want to only listen to specific things so as to not lose track.
  6. I'm trying to make the most of an acoustically poor room. You can read about it in the Architectural section. My question is given the choice (and these are your only options) between placing RFR3/5 in the ceiling over the listening area or RCW3/5 high and back of the listening area - which would be better? Would I really help my cause by making a 6.1 system using either the RFR or RCW setup? The Ceiling is 9 feet and the RCWs would have to be at least 7 feet up. I think the correct positioning for rears in a 5.1 inline but a few feet above the listeners ears - which is more like 5-6 feet - but please correct me if I'm wrong. I tried to talk my wife into using WDST series - but she wasn't keen on that. One last think - are there significant advantages to using either the RFR5 or RCW5s over their smaller conterparts in this configuration and if so what? thanks
  7. if you're running two channels (forum name) does that imply you are not running a seperate sub? If so, why? If not, why? Subs gained in popularity with HT but I'm wondering what they add for music. It seems like it would be very little. So then I was thinking what's the difference between running RF7s vs. running RB75 and a RSW12? or to make it a bit more extreme how about RF7s vs RB35 and RSW12? I need the sub for the HT but what do I gain by having large fronts? The only think i can come up with his volume - and the RF75/RSW12 seems like they would hold there own pretty good compare to the floorstanding RF5s and possibly the RF7s.
  8. I'll talk to the builder about the double wall on the window side as soon as i can. Not sure we'll put plants there - but the cats will like it. Either way is good for the WAF (I think). Can't put a bookcase on the side you mentioned. I've attached a rough layout of the house. It's not really to scale but close enough and I cleaned it up a little. That may help. The bright side is that the 2nd bonus has a lot more promise for a future HT buildout. I believe the dimensions are better for it except for the 8 foot ceiling. I also have various wiring (RJ11, RJ45, cable, etc) all through the house but thanks for thinking of it as well. I talk to the wife about at least putting WDST speakers just about one of the windows and the other on the opposing wall. She wasn't keen on the idea. Can't blame her - they would kind of stick out. Maybe if I can find them in white or at least a picture - maybe i can get her to reconsider. So what i've got is figuring out something for the front - I guess the RF7s - but they are big - might consider the RB7s. A matching center. And then 2 or 3 RFR5 for rears in a 5.1 or 6.1 respectively. RSW12 for the sub most likely.
  9. Dr. Who: I'm all for the bigger is better threory - but will it help with this particular room? I'll do the RF7s if it will really help overcome the limitation being faced. michael hurd: Interesting idea - hard part is which wall. you mention width - one wall has 4 windows - don't think I could do much there with out making it look off. The other wall has two exit points - one on each side. Not sure if just doubling the middle 12 would make a huge different. I could (real easy) have them put in a full wall book case at one end that is 2-3 feet wide. But that would shorten the length not width. It is also the wall i was going to put the fronts, center etc. And if i do the book case - I might get stuck with bookshelf speakers - not sure if that's good or bad. I'm going to take another look at the room today and see if there's any thing I've overlooked.
  10. OK - just so i'm clear - changing the room is not an option. I could change the room if I wanted to also get a divorce. This room is in the middle of the house and will get the most use. I'm not expecting perfection from this room - i just want to set it up the best way possible. Maybe in the future I will set up a better HT and/or listening room in one of the bonus rooms where i have more flexibility. I realize this room is an acoustic nightmare - there is a row of windows on one side, a large archway door on another, two other exits, etc. If it was easy - i wouldn't have asked for suggestions. Why this room?? Because it's going to get the most everyday use and that includes TV and music usage. The dining room, kitchen, foyer, master bedroom etc. all feed off this room. Artto: I read your other post as you suggested and it gave me headache.... felt like i was back in my college physics class. All excellent info - you're just lightyears ahead of what i'm looking for or expect out of this room. I'm just looking for some real basic suggestions to get the most out of this room. I appreciate the work and research that you folks put into your rooms and I'm sure they sound incredible - but i'm not doing that now. I just want to do better then tossing some speakers in and hope it sounds better then a boombox in a field.
  11. I've listened to them and they were fantastic. I didn't hear a huge performance difference above my old Energy speakers until the RF7s. (Listened to RF15,RF35,RF7 and RF5) in that order and then some book shelf speakers. I'm not knocking the RF35 or whatever - just felt they were on par with what I had. A bit punchier and better high end - but wasn't "wowed" till I heard the RF7s. I liked the RF5s as well and just considering the size and potential WAF - I was leaning towards them but haven't ruled anything out yet.
  12. ok to all. while we wait to see if others have opinions. I mainly want to get the equipment right - don't want to return this a bunch of time to get it right. Moving stuff around is easy enough. Except for the rears - which I know the ceiling is a sucky place - but I don't see any alternative for this room. I was think of doing a 6.1 setup with 3 rcr3. Providing a larger sound field and more options since i won't be able to move those. thoughts.
  13. wrench_peddler: relax. Take a deep breath. I had clearly outlined that the room was what I had to work with and was inviting suggestions to make that room work. Violent comments are completely out of line. This is a discussion forum - try and keep that in mind. I post enough on-line that it gets irratating when people answer the wrong question. If I offended you or artto - I truely apologize. I can't change the room - look at it as a challenge. Champagne taste beer budget: thanks. I would guess that was were Artto was going to begin with but just didn't complete the next thought. So what are some of the best ways to counteract this problem? Someone mentioned ealier to consider furniture placement etc. I'm guessing a good surge protector to clean the power. How about speaker size? Placement/orientation? This is where i get into the unknown - A smaller speaker pushed back into the corner and pointed toward the opposite corner - may have the effect of seeming like it was in a larger room?? Or a large speaker that will just envelop the room with sound??
  14. well i don't mean to sound ungrateful to Artto but if I told someone i had to drive from point A to point B and asked what the best route was - I don't think the best response is - you really should fly. How does that help? Plus, I'm a newbie - so if your going to blast a 19" room - then you need to at least give what size room is good. OK so there might be some canceling or whatever at 60hz, but if the room was 22.5 feet wouldn't I loose 50hz, what about 40hz in a 28 feet??? The point is lost without a better explaination and suggestion. And I know ceiling mounts are a bad - but i have little option - so how about some hints on how to make it work the best. Artto seems like he knows his stuff - it's just his response is completly useless.
  15. ARTTO, while all the info sounds great on this forum - I am under the constraints of the builders floor plans. Not sure i can just move a few load bearing walls because some bass might get cancelled. I have 19x19 great room, a 19x20 bonus room and a 19x17 2nd bonus room. That's what i have to work with. I have a hard time believeing that there is no way to get at least acceptable sound out of this room. All the other feedback has been helpful - keep it coming. thanks.
  16. did you or do you have any concerns with not being able to move them? I've also thought of maybe doing 6.1 system - possible using RCR3s - since there's only so much ceiling space. What made you go with the RF7s? I've been thinking about the RF5s. I like the RF7 better - but speakers are large - not sure how they'd look at home. RF5 seemed to be a good selection considering sound, size and price. But I'm not sold on that choice just yet. so many choices......
  17. not sure i've determined that - but I'd be willing to go fairly high if it's worth it. I went to a local dealer and tried out a few. I'm looking at the RF5 for fronts, RC35 center and RSW12. And of course the RCR5 would be in the ceiling. I liked the RF7 - but their quite big. Checked out RF15, 25, 35 - but the RF5 sounded the best in my opinion. The RC35 seems to match up well. The RSW12 was the only RSW series they had. 12 seems big to me - RSW10 might be fine - not sure. Didn't see any reason to put a bookshelf speaker on a stand - seems like a floorstand style is best option. If that all make sense - then I'm still concerned about the use of the rears in the ceiling. Not sure how that will sound. Would consider a 6.1 or 7.1 setup if i knew more about them and if they are worth it.
  18. Never owned Klipsch speakers before. Building a new house and the contractor for the low voltage uses Klipsch. Wanting to take as much advantage speaker placement while the house is being built. The room in question is 19x19x9. There are several exits from the room - so it's fairly open. Because of the exits (archways) and window plancements - you can't really put rear speakers in the sidewalls or rear wall. I don't want them on stands - so the ceiling seems like the only option. Going with RCR-5 for rears then. how much do I look by putting them in the ceiling?? Is this a really poor option? Just for point of reference I have Energy speakers now and the rears are dipoles currently on speaker stands. What speakers (fronts, center, sub) would then work best with the RCR-5 and the room size? Music and moview are equally important. I don't listen to music blast music too often - but want to "wow" company. Movies is where I usually test the speakers a bit more. I don't want to just throw the biggest speaker in the room and have it be overkill it. I currently run an Yamaha reciever (but will probably upgrade) with Energy speakers all around. The fronts have dual 6.5 inch drivers. The Sub is an 8" front firing. I don't think the 8" can keep pace with the fronts - should've gone with the 10" but that rarely comes up. Don't get me wrong - I like the energy speakers (they are mid-range models) - not sure how they compare to Klipsh - I just can't put the rears in the walls and they'll work good in the bonus room
