  1. Hey,

After owning La Scala's for over 10 years it's a time to get them look perfect.

I will stain them or re-veneer them.

Greg's brace will repalce the ugly DIY front brace and tennis balls.

Since cabinet resonanses are an issue - i wan't to use this opportunity to stiffen the box.

I thought definitely to put some MDF on the rear wall - it's resonates as crazy.

What about side walls? Shall i put a layer of plywood? or MDF? What thickness?

This would definitely make easier to repair wood chips and corners - but i don't want to "kill" the cabinet complitely as i assume it can sound too dry/boring.

Bear in mind that Greg's braces will be used - they already should reduce side walls resonances.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Gennady

  2. Hi,

i use La Scala's for the stereo.
They have upgraded xovers, tweeter and fastrac modrange horn.

for the HT i don't have a center speaker at all.

Now i've come across locally at pair of Heresys - if they sound tone similar to La Scala i would use one as center speaker.

So the question - do they sound similar?
Especially in treble, midrange and dynamics?

Bass obviuosly will be different - but this i can compensate in HT processor.

    Thanks!!!!
    Gennady

  3. just to update and close the loop - eventually i went for Dave's Fastrac 2 horn.

they achieve what i was looking for - natural midrange with high clarity and low distotion plus seamless integration with the bass section.

i wasn't aware that stock K55 phenolic driver sounds so good...

  4. it looks to me that 511 is too much incompatible with La Scala. i'm more and more leaning to getting Fastrac 2 horn which according to Dave is completely "plug and play"...

...What you are trying to do would have been plug and play if you had an ab-2 or al-2/al-3 network.

i don't want to go for radical xover change - so just being curious - how this would work?
i've seen in this thread that 511 doesn't go very well below 500 hz and La Scalas bass bin doesn't go very well over 400 hz...

  5. what do you mean by that?

the problem currently that it doesn't sound 100% right.

since you enlightened me that 511 and K400 have different frew responce - i think this should be solved.

how? sounds to me that moving xover point from 400 to 500 is required.

but i'm not 100% sure as i'm not speaker design expert.

so expirienced guys' input will be highly appreciated.

  6. an update - abvout a month ago i installed Bob's midrange gaskets and it tamed the mid bass problem.
apperantly the opening of the gasket is smaller than k55 throat - so it's probably a must item to use as it affects sound a lot.

anyway - it looks like i really missing something - 511 horn doesn't get down to 400 Hz as k400 does - so probably i'm having a 100 Hz "whole" (thx to speakerfritz for pointing this out).

and indeed it sounds now like not enoough energy in the mid bass (i hope it's not psychological [;)]).

i don't understand in xovers - so pls tell me is it possible to raise woofer to 500Hz?

or maybe it's just better to go for "drop in" solution such as Dave's Fastrac horn?
