  1. just to clarify - this is type A network, right? that new 9.9uf capacitor - what type/viltage should it be? Thx, Gennady
  2. make sense. what to mod to raise xover point to 500hz? another one - for mid attenuation Al says to use 16 ohm resistor across the output to the mid driver, and dropping to tap #3 : so it needs to be 12 watt or more?
  3. Got 511 horns for my La Scalas - and although i love midrange timbre and clarity and increase in details - they create a new problem. But first few words about the setup: - ~1977 La Scalas which AA xover was modified to A by removing diodes and second coil. Caps were refreshed few years ago by Bob's oil caps. - tweeters i use are JBL 2404 - small braces on bass bins so what's the problem? the midbass became slow and wooly - the fast and snappy character of La Scalas has been lost. i'm thinking to try attennuate squawker. saw this thread with instructions: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/135666.aspx any additional ideas? because imrovements it brought i really like - if i just could solve this midbass issue.... Thx, Gennady
  4. hi Joe, i'm 100% happy with the bass. this 50 kg beast do the work very very good. it moght lack the glory or sofistication of Velodyne - but it blends absolutely seamelessely with the fronts. in my setup it outlasted 5 front speakers []
  5. i just thought: since i use another tweeter, will get another horn, possibly another x-over and want anyway to reinforce and reveneer the cabinet - what's the point to do all this? maybe it makes more sense to sell my La Scalas, build new nice bass bins and add "aftermarket" horn and my JBL tweeter? if i build new reinforced bass bins - do i loose some "magic"?
  6. Al, i bet you've had expirience with both 511 and trachorn - how would you describe differences (with K55)? i probaby will have a n opportunity to get locally for a try 511 horns - is following adapter what i need to get k55 connected to it?: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260638064711 many thanks for your inputs !!!
  7. Hi Dave - thx for your input !!! 2404 doesn't sound too hot or prominent to me - definitely it's more extended than k77 - but that old dog probably didn't work above 15kHz anyway.... as to xover and impedance - i thought if current amp drives my Scalas good - why to touch it? from your expirience how would you compare sund/performance/integration/etc of the Fastrac horn and Altec 511? Talking about improvements i want and the midrange driver - is it OK to stay with K55 or i really shall thing about something better?
  8. yea - Viva is really nice. i had it pumped up with better parts and interstages which made it really hard to beat. it drives L300 no problem at all. and this is even before i've tried it with good 300b tubes. but for some strange reason it doesn't work well with La Scalas[]. my simple el34 single ended sounds much better with them. back to upgrade topic - budget wise i would like not to go over 500$. JubScala is interesting but i saw on one of the related threads that 402+k69 cost ~1300$[8o|], and i guees few hundreds more needed for xover....... i thought to contact directly Al K, Dave and Bob to hear their suggestions on various options - but i thought it's much better to do this at the forum pages for better knowledge sharing and keeping info publicly available for the future.
  9. After 2 years with JBL L300 i plan to go back to La Scalas. (see previous post http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/143832.aspx) music - 90% jazz. moslty 50s-60s (Coltrain, Rollins, Miles, Ella, Art Peper, Peterson etc), some bluse, rock and classic. listnening distance 4 - 4.5 m. power amp - el34 single ended which sounds good. i've tried in the past Yamamoto 2a3 SET and it was even better. it had no problem to drive my La Scalas. upgrades already done: 1. wbt binding posts - great for convinience 2. xover moded from stock AA to A - i liked it much more 3. Bob Crites oil caps installed 4. jbl 2404 tweeter is connected instead of stock tweeter 5. a primitive bracing board is used to reduce bass bin vibrations what doesn't need to be improved? the BASS. in conjunction with REL Stadium III sub low region is absolutely covered. what i want to improve? the most wanted improvement is in the MIDRANGE - make it more detailed, less “dark”, “dirty” and distorted. psl help me to understand my options. i see various horns possible (Fastrac 1", Fastrac 2", Altec 511b, altec multi cells, K510, anything else?) and drivers (old, new, 1", 2", JBLs, Altec, etc). budget wise i would like to keep costs on a low side. additional factors: - tweeter/treble. Even with JBL 2404 tweeter the treble is a bit on a hard side - L300’s treble is “gentle” (I’m not talking about roll off) and have a lot of air and "good" zing. - xover - i beleive in simple designs and definitely would like to keep La Scalas low power SET friendly. owuld love to hear your input and thoughts. Gennady
  10. Nice job. General question - why to go to polyprop caps instead of stock like oil caps (for example those that Bob Crites sells)? is it cheaper? sounds better? few years ago i put Crites oil caps in A xover. honestly speaking i haven't noticed a difference - so if it was there it definitely wasn't huge. maybe my 30 years old caps still were in very good condition?......
  11. first thing is quite strange - the 300B push pull works bad with La Scalas. it sounds great with much more "difficult" L300's but on La Scalas that simple el34 single ended with simples EH tubes sounds better. Bass wise "LS plus sub" is deeper and more powerfull than L300. sound is bigger and more dynamic in mid and treble. bass bin resonates but it's kinda "box free" and faster. L300 do better mid clarity - LS sound dark and hoarse in comparison. maybe better mid horn can improve this?..... L300's treble has a lot zing (good one) and air. this is really fun. maybe better tubes than EH can improve this. but all in all it might be indeed that L300 tweeters are just better than 2404......
  12. this is interesting remark about xvovers. mine actually were AA and really didn't like them - so with Guy's adwise i butchered from it diods and other crap to make it pure A which made the sound very good. then i installed Bob's GE oil capacitors - honestly i'm haven't noticed a defference. if it's there it's small. maybe my stock caps just were in a good shape....
  13. stock unmoded La Scalas have few wonderfull strengths but also few crucial drawbacks which IMO prevent them to go even into 90s. but add bass, but better tweeter, sort out xover (i like the simplest A type), do some bin bracing - and paired to high quality tube amp we're talking about very serious performers.
  14. i hoped 511 horn would do. but it's 1" only.... maybe Fastrac 2" horn?.....
  15. thx for details about JubScala !!!! i've heard this term but didn't figured out what it means. thx again !!! i like to keep things as simple as possible - first order xovers usually i like. and i kinda like JBL/Altec drivers sound. so i will have to explore avilable options []
  16. i'm sure agree that complete lack of bass under 50 hz is a serious drawback. frankly speaking it can't be tolerated in a long run. i solved it by pairing them with Rel Stadium sub and this worked very good. the speed, quality, percieved lack of distorsion and "boxiness" of La Scala's bass is something that L300 just can't do. another known weak point is the tweeter - and as i said i solved it by using JBL 2405 tweeter. i'm probably going convert La Scalas to Altec/JBL "mutatnt" - tweeter is already there, now it's time for mid hord+driver []
  17. is there a problem with hights in L300? i haven't noticed it.... do you think caps refresh will mae as dynamic at mid/high as La Scala?
