One more vote for the SXRD

I just took a CEDIA class and they had a "Home Theater Expert" there to give a lecture. Two of the things that he said were: It is bad to mount a surround speaker too close to the ceiling and it is bad to point a surround speaker towards the listening position. He said the surround speakers (in a 5.1) should be at least 2 feet abover your head a to the sides of the listener, but at least 2 feet away from the ceiling. Also, pointing the speaker towards the listener does not allow the sound to create as much of a "surround" effect.

try ebay.
Already tried that with no luck.

A co-worker of mine got a Sub-12 and Synergy Series Quintet III for an anniversary present, but his room is wired for 7.1. I gave the Klipsch parts department a call asking on a price for 2 more sats, but they told me that you cannot buy them separately. Is he out of luck or is there another way to get these speakers?

Found a 58 khorn for 150 at local antique store. found a sonic mate a 59 on ebay for a grand 3 years later.
$1,150 for a pair of Khorns....sounds like a deal to me!

I have never been so lucky as to find Heritage at a
thrift or a garage sale. The first time my brother in law saw my
LaScalas the first words out of his mouth were "Those look like garage
sale speakers" I asked him where he seen this type of speaker at a
garage sale and he could not answer me. This is coming from a guy that
ownes 2 wave radios and a $3000.00 bose HTIAB system. After hearing the
Lascalas he politly and VERY QUICKLY declined a head to head.
Nice work! A co-worker just spent $1300 on a Bose 3-2-1, but I didn't have the heart to tell her what she could have really had (i.e. Klipsch) with that kind of money. I, however, believe that if they think it sounds good, then it's fine. If they start telling you that their system is BETTER than yours, then I'd have a problem

Anybody have any good stories about finding great deals on Klipsch (Khorns, CW, Hersey...etc) at a garage sale? There have got to be some people out there that get the speakers as a hand-me-down and sell them for something stupid like $100 becuase they have no idea how nice the speakers are. I always take a quick look when driving by a garage sale to see if there are any hidden gem speakers. Somebody on here must have a great story on a deal they got, lets hear 'em!!!

Mild,
Some movies purposely go for the grainy look. War of the Worlds is a good example, and it is no accident.
Paul
Ditto. War of the Worlds definitely has a special "look" to it to help create the mood.
-
And I saw a poll today stating the 8 out of 10 people were happy with the current movie going (multiplex) experience. BULL!!
I bet that is pretty accurate. All of my friends think that I am
crazy for driving an hour to go to a theater that has bigger screens
and a good sound system (Klipsch, of course!) I'd rather wait for
a movie to come out DVD than watch at one of the local theaters.
My living room sounds at least twice as good!!!
-
I agree completely, and have mentioned this very same thing to some of
my friends. My conversation goes something like "Some people on
the forum have these killer home theater speakers, but are still
watching a 28" TV". So, I do agree that an upgrade will
make a huge difference. I am slightly biased though, since I am
99% movies, 1% music.

Fish,
Are you talking about Lafayette, IN?

Thanks Scooter, I've never tried to search for "macroblocking".
While I don't have Comcast, I use the same box that Comcast does
(Motorola DCT-6412). I spent a while over at AVS yesterday, but
I'll try again. Thanks for the tip!

May not be true but i was told that is a problem
with LCD or Plasma i cant recall witch one, only on fast moving scenes
?
You are referring to LCD's, but that problem has been solved for the
most part with recent LCD technology. I know that my TV is
capable, becuase when I watched the Colts vs. Steelers game this year,
the picture was completely flawless, which lead me to believe that the
cable company was sending a signal with little or no compression.
-
I get this exact same thing with my Motorola cable box, but it only
occurs on certain channels some of the time. For example, during
the NFL season, I was flipping back and forth between two games and it
was happening on one channel, and not the other. My opinion, and
it is only an opinion, is that the cable company compresses some of the
channels to save on space or bandwith(?) and that's why the pixelation
is happening during fast-moving scenes. Maybe DirectTV does the
same thing. Anyone else care to jump in?!?! I have been
wondering about this for a while.

I just watched a couple of scenes from ROTK, and I have to agree that
the spectacle setting really makes a big difference! Also, I just
hooked up my 2nd rear surround (RS-35), and am running a true 7.1 for
the first time! I know that most movies don't support it, but
ROTK is one of them, and let me tell you, the difference is
amazing! Thanks for introducing me to spectacle! I guess I
was just too naive to try it out before.
-
Thanks for the info, now I've gotta try it out!!!

So, does the spectacle setting use the original signal (i.e. this
sound goes to the left surround speaker) and then enhance it on top of
that. Basically, what I'm asking is when you use this setting, do
your little lights for F,C,R,LS,BS,RS, and Sub light up on the receiver
to show that the receiver is recognizing the dolby signal? If so,
then I just misunderstood what the spectacle setting was.

That is one of the few computer games that I really enjoy. I
found it about 2 years ago, and still play it every once in a while.
-
I agree about the sub. If you are mostly into movies, what you
have would be greatly improved with a sub. See if you can find an
RW-10 or 12 at a discount since they are going away. If you are
into multi-channel music, on the other hand, having better surrounds
will help with that. But, there is no way that you are going to
get away without a sub in either case. As has been said, setting
your 15's to small on the receiver and letting the sub take over the
low end will be your best bet. You can turn the volume down on
the sub if the neighbors start to complain.
-
RF-15's went from an MSRP of $300 each, to an amazing "your price" of $479 each!!! I'll have to jump on that one

The remote is made by Logitech (they bought out Harmony Remote)
and will control pretty much everything, including your Xbox. You
can take the "test drive" to see how the set-up process works. I
got my for under on eBay for a fair amount under MSRP.

Check my sig and see that I am the owner of a Yamaha 5760 which was
purchased for about half off when my buddy worked at BB. I have
the upgrade bug, but not enough to shell out the cash right now.
This reciever is great, especially for a starter, and like has already
been mentioned it has the pre-outs, so when you are ready for an amp,
that's all you will need. The YPAO setup is really simple,
however I found that I needed to turn up my the gain on my center
channel quite a bit to match the mains, and then turn up the surrounds
a little bit. I did not use a SPL meter, yet, but the dialogue
sounded MUCH quieter out of the center compared to the music, etc...
coming out of my mains. One thing to consider with the Yamaha is
the lack of an HDMI input, if you plan on using your receiver for all
of your switching. HDMI is the future of HD content and it looks
like component is going away. I use the Harmony 880 remote and
bypass the receiver (all of my video inputs except the on screen
display for the receiver go directly to the TV). It would
normally be a pain switching all of the inputs to get the correct
set-up, but the Harmony does it all with the push of one button.
For example, I hit my "Watch DVD" button on the harmony, and it sends a
singal to the TV to change inputs, the Receiver to change the sound
output, and the DVD player to turn on and hit "play". It's a
great tool and worth every penny. The Harmony 520 is a similar
remote with less options that can be found at Wal-Mart for about $100.
