  1. Is a tube amp better to use with Lascala's, or is a solid state amp better, and why? The reason I want to know is because I have a nice stereo system now, but it is all relatively new (solid state). Should I be happy with what I've got or lay down some change for a nice tube amp? BTW, I don't know what my stereo sounds like with Lascala's because I am building mine and I'm not quite finished yet. I don't want to invest my time on this project and fire them up and think, Gee, I sure thought they were going to sound better. Oh yeah, I have followed the design faithfully and my drivers are K-33,PD-5VH,K-77 with Al's Xover. What do you think? Thanks, Thom.
  2. Just wondering if there is any difference between the Atlas PD-5VH driver and the Klipsch K-55. I have an opportunity to buy some PD-5VH drivers really cheap to use in some LaScala's I'm building. Thanks in advance, Thom
  3. What size is the diameter / threads for a K-401 horn? Thom
  4. Bob So I will still be able to use all the stuff I have bought to build Al K's crossover except for one capacitor change. If this is right, what do I change and how (I'm sure it is simple, but remember, I'm a cabinet maker not an electrical engineer). I also have a CNC machine, so will you give me all the dimensions / plans to make a cabinet for a Cornscala, because it sounds like you got it right!! By the way, when I bought the K-33's from you, you gave me some prices on K-401's and PD-5VH's about a month ago. Are these prices still good because I'm ready to buy!! Thanks, Thom
  5. Bob, Great idea and design. I am very new to all of this and I am continually amazed. Just bought some K-33s from you and getting ready to get the horns. I've got all the stuff to build Al K's crossovers. Do I need to change? I own my own cabinet shop. What do I need to do? Thom.
  6. Someone posted a reply to one of my questions and mentioned something called a "Cornscala". What is a "Cornscala" and what do you have to do to make one. I am building a pair of LaScalas and integrating them into my entertainment system. As I understand, the Cornwalls have a better bass response than the LaScalas. I can see the advantages to this which makes me curious about a "hybrid" speaker with the best of both worlds. Am I right or am I way off track. Another poster said that Bob Crites designed this creation. I have bought some speakers from him so Bob, if you read this please help ---- Anyone help!!! Thanks in advance, Thom
  7. Thank you to dodger & Dr. Who for your advice on building an entertainment center with LaScalas built into it. To address the issue of placement I am planning on putting the two bass bins on either side of the center cabinet which measures 49" wide. I then plan on putting the mid & high horns where ever they would sound best. Remember, I am building this from the ground up so I will have total flexability on where I can place them. I am concerned with staging and the "sweet spot" which I know a little bit about (I worked my way through college installing home and car audio equipment for a audio store in town) but, correct me if I am wrong, I am under the impression that bass is omni-directional and mid/highs are directional. So if this is right, I shuold be able to do this, right? As far as why LaScalas, I think they sound great! Thanks in advance, Thom.
  8. I have been following many threads on this forum for awhile now (approx. 1 year) and I have gotten a lot of valuable information. Today I decided to join in because I have finally decided to construct my own set of LaScalas. I know what you are all thinking - Oh boy here we go again. In many areas I'm sure that you're right. But one area I am very skilled in is construction. I have been a professional cabinet/furniture maker for 19 years so I don't anticipate any problems there. But I still have questions. My biggest question is can I integrate a pair of LaScalas into a entertainment center? Room is not a problem. The dimensions of the center are 14'x 8'x 46". So, my question is: are there any concerns with my plan? Oh, BTW I already have all the components needed to build a pair of speakers; 2 K33-E woofers, 2 K55-m sqwakers, 2 k77 tweeters and a pair of home made x-overs (used ALK plans). So what do you think?
