  1. Harry, I bought Bob Crites CT125 tweeters & 500uh inductor to crossover the mid/tweet @ 4500hz, and a pair of 13uf & 4uf Sonicaps from Sonic Craft. I could not afford anything else at the moment. If that doesn't help, then I'm probably not going to be happy with the speakers. The only thing I'd still like to do that's currently out of financial reach at the moment is to install the Trachorn in place of the stock mid horn. L.D.
  2. Where does one find the pattern to cut the horn's flare to the proper proportions? This looks like a project I'd be into tackling, but I'd want to make sure I'm doing it right. L.D.
  3. Mark, Have you tried or know anyone who has tried Al's 'improved ' crossover for the khorn? Just wondered if it was worth it's cost. Funds are limited at the moment, but I don't want a so-so/incremental improvement, so if I have to save and wait till I have enough, then that's what I'll do. L.D.
  4. Now you tell me............ I had sold a pair of 511s not too long ago, but they had 806A drivers. Now I have plenty of suggestions to consider and I'm not sure exactly what would be pleasing to my ears. I just know that the cornerhorns are not balanced as the volume increases and become unlistenable. Basically, it comes down to the final dollar figure. I'll calculate the cost of building Al's network on my own, then that will help me come to a conclusion on which way to go. I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you for the help. L.D.
  5. Nevermind some of the questions in the last post. I did go to the ALK website and took a look. I'll check their stuff out a little further and repost if I have any remaining questions. I appreciate the lead. Thanks, L.D.
  6. The harshness I'm hearing could be better described as an over accentuating of the upper midrange that multiplies in loudness more than other frequencies when the volume is increased. I had the same problem with a pair of Klipsch Tangent 500 speakers. I sold them because of that very reason. My last pair of speakers before the Khorns were a pair of Von Schweikert VR-1 monitors and they did not become unlistenable at loud volumes, though they also did not have quite the 'presence' of the Khorns at low & mid volumes. 3 Questions: How extreme of a slope is needed to significantly diminish this smear? What procedure is used to get the driver timing aligned? Is all this beyond my capabilities A) in understanding, in equipment/tools needed, C) in funds required to get it 'right'. I would like to get the cornerhorns 'right', but I'm not sure if it is possible for me to do. I may have to settle for 'better' rather than 'best'. I guess I could just keep the volume down, then all problems are solved. Ha! L.D.
  7. I understood that the purpose of the p-trap was to lessen the impact of the upper midrange spike that brought about the harshness. So, does the p-trap help this or not? L.D.
  8. Thank you guys for all the info on fixing this issue with the K-horns. I'm about to purchase the caps to recap it, so I'll get the other parts as well. I really like these speakers, until I turn them up, so these two improvements should get these where I can really enjoy them. Thanks, L.D.
  9. Does the P-trap for the Heresys work the same for the khorns? That's a 0.25mh inductor parallelled or in series with a 4uf cap? This is connected in on the common side of the sqauwker, not positive? The reason I'm asking so many questions is that there's too much information to sort all of it out clearly. I also don't like to buy parts I can't return. Let me know if you know what parts to use and how to hook them up. I'd sure appreciate it. Larry D.
  10. Bob, Yikes! The two caps that are supposed to be 2.0uf tested at 2.47uf and 3.07uf. The 13uf tested at 15.8uf. When I buy new caps they usually test right on the money or very close.....these didn't. No leakage, but they're not where they're supposed to be, that's for sure. As soon as I get these khorns paid off (next month) I'll buy some Sonicaps. Thank you much for the schematic. L.D.
  11. Let me know when you might be out this way. I'll see if I'm going to be around at the same time. (I travel alot.) I am going to buy some Sonicaps soon. I didn't have anything that would add up to 13uf, just some 10uf. L.D.
  12. I just acquired a pair of 1978 cornerhorns with AA crossovers. I'd already disconnected and checked the capacitors with a multimeter in one of the x-overs, and the 13uf was off by more than 20%. I do not know what the other two are supposed to be. Does anyone have the proper uf rating for the two smaller can caps? The speakers have a harshness problem in the upper midrange when I turn the volume up. I'm using a 14watt tube amp that sounds fine with my Von Schweikert monitors, but the khorns can't be turned up if I'm playing certain songs. Anyone with an AA x-over tried certain other caps and gotten smoother results than the stock caps? Any other simple updates or modifications that I can use on these for improved sound? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. L.D.
  13. Pat, Thanks for the cap info. I do have a number of quality film caps already here at home. I'll see if I have some that would meet/add up to the same specs. Thanks. L.D.
  14. Yes, I have been reading alot of old postings and advice does go everywhere. I'm not sure who to believe. If the caps are in spec, then I'll leave them in, since oil capacitors are supposed to be some of the smoothest sounding. I have a Fluke multimeter which can check the cap's uf reading. I've been spoiled by my Von Schweikert VR-1s. They play very realistically with all the details, but without the harshness. I had a pair of Klipsch Tangent 500s that I really liked except for the harshness of the midrange when the volume was turned up. I had to stuff a tissue down the throat of the horn to make it listenable. This was when I had several tube amps, so the amp wasn't at fault. Thanks for the reply, L.D.
  15. I just figured out the 5 & S mixup before I read your post. Yep, they're 1978s. And yes, these are my first pair of Khorns.....a Craigslist special. I'm not sure what to think of them yet. On some songs they're wonderful, but on others that I like, the upper midrange hurt my ears and I have to turn them down. Bass seems a bit shy....even when tight in the corners. (I run my Eico HF-81 tube amp flat with no boost to the treble or bass.) I'd like to do some upgrades/modifications, but I want to gather information about the khorns before I decide to do anything. It looks as if they have oil capacitors already, so I won't be changing that. I will check them though, to see if they're in spec. If I could boost the bass a little (not that much) and tame the harshness in the upper midrange, I think I'd be very happy with them. L.D.
  16. Thanks for the info. Yes, the 5 is actually an S, making the year 1978. I appreciate the help. L.D.
  17. I just bought a pair of khorns and was curious t find out what year they were made in. One of the consecutive serial numbers is 125385. I tried to find out the information reading old posts, but didn't find it anywhere. I'd appreciate some help if someone knows. Thanks! L.D.
  18. What kind of finish is on them? How do you accept payment? What would shipping cost be to Boise, ID 83709? FedEx Ground has better rates than UPS (www.fedex.com). Thanks.
  19. The Tangents 500's which I have are the same ones as the three-ways in the Klipsch product files and have the exact same speakers used in the Heresy II's. Since I don't have any Tangent 500 or Heresy II crossover specs, I am not sure if they are the exactly the same even though they do share the same x-over points. Where can I find the crossover cap, resistor, and coil specs for the Tangent? I'm planning on upgrading the crossover parts, but maybe I need to hear from others in the Forum who have upgraded their Heresy II x-over and have gotten excellent results.
  20. Anyone have any proven x-over mods they could recommend? Cabinet mods/improvements? Maybe you don't have Tangents, but what has worked well for you? (Crossover points are 700 and 6000 hz.) I'd appreciate any help.
  21. Steve, Sold them yet? Let me know. Thanks, Larry
