You need the hemptone speakers for great tone...

    They ain't cheap.

I had a bassman back in the late '60s. The cab had two JBL D130s. That was one NICE amp/speaker combo.

I just got a Tone Tubby 4x10 alnico closed back cab that I've been breaking in with a little Univalve running a KT-90...the hemp cones really sound warm and they took the last rattle out of my low-d string. I'm strongly considering putting them in the rest of my cabs.

Has anyone discussed or looked into the merrits of hemp cones for audio? Tone Tubby says their currently looking at neodydidium...

Also, glad that Dr. Bill was able to rescue that Marshall...4.gif

  2. Word on the grapevine is that for as crappy as the new Marshall's are, they are way better then the new Fender stuff. Best bet is to replace the pc board with P-T-P. Also, KT-66's and KT-88's tend to sound better in Marshall's, or at least to my humble ears...:)

  3. "When i emailed Klipsch with the question of how much power they reccomended for the RF-7's, they told me that a 50 watt amp was way underpowered for the RF-7's. he also said this."

Sounds like you got the same story when I called about driving RF-7's and was told 90 watts wasn't enough. After a few more calls, I was finally guided to RB-75's...to make a long story short, I wasn't happy, traded up to RF-5's, still wasn't happy and finally came back to the RF-7's I wanted in the first place and am happily driving them with 60-watts triode/90 watts ultralinear with my Rogue Tempest II. To be honest, the house shakes with bass in triode and I can't be in the same room in ultralinear at 3/4's power. It took me awhile to realize the Klipsch techs were worried I wouldn't have adequate reserves for bass headroom and suspect it'd be great to have a Rogue Zeus to get 250 watts/channel but the 60 watts do fine for the time being. The other thing I also figured out was you really need to run them at 4 ohms...that made a big difference in bass quality and volume....

    Enjoy the RF-7's...

  4. Has anyone come up replacement feet for the RF-7's? I found various threads about need for something more subtantial, but haven't found any reference to any actual commercial product or homemade options.

I've already managed to have 4 of the rubber feet come free from their screw heads while I've been trying to sort out optimal speaker placement in my listening room and I'm really worried about what a naked screw head could do to hardwood floors.

    Thanks...

  5. Thanks for all the advice. I'm swapping out for RF-7's to get the 10-inch woofer, even though the RF-5's are waking up. I couldn't get the carver down for comparison, secondary to some recent back surgery, but I changed the Rogue's impedence to 4-ohms after chasing a few other questions on the forum and it's like the RF-5's woke up and found religion. Deep solid bass and enough volume to drive me out of the room in the Rogue's triode mode which I think is about 6wpc.

Best and thanks again for the advice...Hopkins

  6. I switched my Rogue over to 4-ohms and played the intro to Electric Ladyland in triode mode. It was if the RF-5's found religion and finally they were loud enough to drive me out of the room! I can't wait to see what the RF-7's do when they arrive...

I had asked Klipsch tech about the switch, along with a few other questions, that they couldn't answer. I suspect they're worried about liability issues, as one of my questions was about the swapping out of crossovers that I've read about on the Forum. I also learned that its' Klipsch's policy to not release frequency response curves, which I found interesting.

To cover myself, I asked Mark O'Brien at Rogue Audio if the amp could handle either of the RF's at 4-ohms and he told me no problem...Back to Electric Ladyland...best and thanks for the advice...Hopkins Stanly

  7. Thanks to all for the responses to my sanity check! I was puzzled about the response from Klipsch Tech and wasn't looking for anything louder then I am getting with my KG3's with a 50-watt Carver and the sensitivity on the RB-75, RF-5 and RF-7 looked oh so much better.

RF-7's should be here by the end of the week to swap for the RF-5's, which puts me where I wanted to start in the first place. Thank god for Goodguys! This is the third swap during this Klipsch adventure!

If I wanted to get another tube amp with 200 watts for a bit of extra power under $5K including pre-amp, are there any suggestions? It looks like only the Rogue or Antique Sound Labs monoblocks are the only solution I've found on the web in my range.

Again, thanks to all the help I've received from the forum to date.

  8. I'm trying to get an idea of what adequate power is required for powering RF-7's. I'd originally considered them, but Klipsch tech told me the 90 watt tube amp wasn't enough power; however I'm now upgrading because the RB-75's or RF-5's don't have enough bass and realizing I really want the 10 inch woofers to be happy.

It struck me as weird that any Klipsch speaker should need more then 3-40 watts, as I recall Paul Klipsch used to complain about folks using amplifiers to heat homes because of inefficient speaker designs and 4 KT-88's are definitely enough to heat a room.

Thanks for thoughts and comments...Hopkins Stanley

  9. Best and thanks to all who responded. It appears that I've got a bit of work to sort out the bass difference. I'm beginning to think its' a question of source material. White Stripes "elephant" album from an atrac source sounds really clear with house shaking bass with the Rogue T-II in triode mode, while a lot of other material doesn't have as much of a "shaking" to it with it in 90-watt mode. I've put them on 1 foot risers and moved them out into the room so that their 2 feet from the wall which seems to help. I'm also thinking the KG's have a bit of a more pronounced response in the upper bass range while the RF-s is a lot tighter and clearer.

For the record, I'm using some LyricSG cable from Evidence Audio. The owner made some special bi-wire cables with spade connections for me as a favor. I think I'm also going to have to use the cable for awhile, as I'd forgot that the cable sounds better over time when I use it for guitars.

Again thanks to all for all the suggestions...

  10. More power with the Rogue on RF-5's. The Rogue has no tone controls and the Carver is set for tone/loudness bypass for cleaner signal. I'm really beginning to think the KG series were designed for more robust bass while the RF series is cleaner and tighter. I'm also wondering if the RF's need to be broken in a bit...I've been using the KG's since 1992.

  11. My KG 3's are powered by an old Carver 50-watt amp and I recently put them on pedestles to elevate them 22 inches off the floor. I recently moved the KG's upstairs to a bedroom and purchased the RF-5's to replace them in the living room. I'm also using a Rogue T-II amp to power the RF's. I checked my wiring and everything is in phase...also, I've got the Rf's bi-wired. Hands down the KG's shake the house at half-volume compared to the RF's at 3/4 volume...

Thanks for the questions and response...Hopkins

  12. I just purchased a pair of RF-5's and was a bit surprised that the bass response isn't as loud and house shaking as my old KG 3's which are less efficient and have less of a bass response spec. wise. Tech support told me that I needed to use more then the 90-watts I'm currently using with the RF 5's to get that kind of bass response, but couldn't give me a very good reason why I get better (house-shaking bass) with the KG 3's only using 50 watts. The RF-5's seem plenty loud with 90-watts and I'm wondering if the Reference series just differs from the KG series in bass response in general...perhaps the Reference series was designed always have subwoofer support?

Much appreciation to anyone who can comment...Hopkins Stanley
