  1. I was all set to swap out my old caps on the E-2 networks in my Heresy's and picked up caps that matched values off of a schematic for the E-2s. Well now that I have the board on my desk and the solder iron hot I see the old rectangular caps for the tweeter and squawker are both 2.0 mF instead of the 2.2 and .22mF values on the schematic and that I bought. Darn. The serial number of one of the speakers is 8450834 and it has K-22 woofers, K-53 squakers and K-77m tweeters. Should I stick to the 2.0 values that came in it. Or can I at least use up those 2.2 caps and if so what effect does it have? I'm trying out the Jantzen Cross caps hoping for some improvement. Am also adding some 1/8" hard vinyl floor tile material to the back board of the cabinet and some floor spikes in hopes of gaining punchier bass.
  2. I love my La Scala's, especially since the networks were upgraded. Now I am out for all the small tweeks on my system. I know there is lots of controversy surrounding the merits of bi-wires between amps and speakers but am just curious if the La Scala networks can be set up easily for bi-wires? Any idea if its an improvement
  3. I have a pair of 1977 La Scalas Walnut stained birch with black cloth grills in excellant condition. The networks were recently rebuilt by Dean and they sound great. I have them on Craigs List for $1100. If you are interested write Carl at solarcruzer@yahoo.com
  4. I was so impressed with the sound improvement in my La Scala's after Dean reworked the networks and set the taps up to drop the squawker by 3 db that I see the merit of swapping out the old cheap caps. Apparently the caps leaked all over when I shipped the boards to him so it was time anyway. These 84 Heresy's I just picked up would probably benefit from a cap upgrade as well. Here's my question, replacing the total of six caps with Theta Audiocaps can add up in cost pretty quickly and I wonder if using the Dayton or Solen metallized polypropylene for a lot less money will still be a large improvement over the old caps? I dont know much about this but I want to tackle it myself. Are the new caps polarized and if so can someone describe which way they orient on the crossovers? Thanks, Carl
  5. I must be bitten by the bug. First it was my $200 La Scala's that I had Dean rebuild the networks on and did the rope caulk treatment and they sound so good. Next I found a pair of Heresy's for the other room and my new Jolida tube amp is coming tomorrow. A few questions. First off, the last owner said the Heresy's were 84's. They are serial number 8450834 and8450838 and have E-2 crossovers. So, is that an 84? I went to replace the terminal strip on the back with some nice binding posts and see the back plate is thinner wood than the sides. Would it make sense to add dampening material to it to improve bass? Also, is there anything to be gained by doing the rope caulk treatment on the mid-horn? Carl
  6. I have a pair of 1977 La Scala's and the woofers sound okay but I am curious if the surround Klipsch used would be rotted out by now? I guess I could remove them to have a look but it may be a needless hassle if you guys tell me so. Carl
  7. Can anyone recommend a particular part that I can mount to the terminal strip on the AA networks on my La Scalas that will allow me to attach banana plugs? I've seen binding post adapters made for some early tube amps and wonder if the same thing is being made for my speakers? Carl
  8. I just picked up a pair of La Scala's with what looks like a cherry colored stain and type AA networks. They are model LS-BR and are serial numbers 12R924 and 12R925. Can any of you tell me the date of manufacture? One thing odd about them is that someone took the squawker and tweeter and mounted them to the face of the cabinet with the screws showing out the front. In other words, they screwed the back face of the horn flange to the front face of the cabinet and now the grill covers dont fit. Before I restore the original mount is there any logical reason they would have done this? From listening to the speakers I hear they could use improvement. Obviously the caps could be replaced. Can anyone recommend caps that are inexpensive since I may not keep the speakers, yet of high enough quality that they will be an improvement? Carl
