  1. Comcast was here again the other day and I now have a DVR dual tuner box. I am STILL having problems with the SciFi channel and a few others as far as sound only coming out of one channel. The so-called "tech" guys from Comcast didn't know squat. Sssheeshh... *I* know more than they do! It's beginning to sound like it's a local issue. I was talking to a friend of mine who also has Comcast but lives in a different county and ALL channels come through fine on his HT system. And yes, I've checked every setting you can think of on the comcast box, tv, receiver, etc. etc. Guess it's time to TRY and get someone intelligent on the phone at Comcast. Rhi

Now I haven't heard the different KG speakers -- in fact the only KG I've ever heard was a 3.2 -- so I don't know what sound differences there are, if any, between (say) a 2, a 2.2, and a 2.5. My instinct would be to stick with a .5 series since that's what your fronts are, and you want your surrounds to blend in with your front stage. If I were in your shoes and could place the matching bookshelves, that's what I would do. Matching surrounds make your front sound better. As a f'rinstance, when I had Heresys behind me with my Chorus IIs up front, I'd hear surround effects and think, "Oh, there go the surrounds." At the beginning of the very first movie I watched with my Quartets in place, a garbage truck pulls up behind you as you're looking at a house. I turned around and peeked through the blinds to see who was parking in front of my house. Boy, did I feel sheepish. EDIT: Actually I do have an idea. Flank the speakers on either side of the TV, with the center on top or in the cubby beneath it. Stand your surrounds on end tables on either side of the couch, or like you said, use stands to get them up a little over head level. If the speakers are wide enough, stack the gear on top of them -- use them for your rack. Alternatively, empty the TV stand and put the gear in there, maybe removing the doors for better ventilation -- and so the remotes will work. Of course I'm probably not seeing something, but that's what the picture tells me. ---------------- Whew... lots to think about but nothing I'll be able to do soon. I'm beginning to realize there's a lot of planning involved before "jumping the gun" so to speak. I thought about moving my front mains to the sides of the tv but I just don't think it will pay off. Don't think there's enough room on either side of my TV for the mains and hey, since I'm a lady living alone it ain't that easy.. though I'm no slacker either. I got those old Cerwin Vega's hooked up later this afternoon and between them and the SS-1s I'm not getting hardly any volume out of them. Yep, I've checked all my settings via OSD so I'm at a loss as to where to go from here and don't want to invest anything more until I research this more. I'm a 52 year young lady who grew up in the 60s and LOVE hearing my DVDs and CDs LOUD. But I just can't seem to get the volume from the rear and back surrounds. Should I start thinking about pre/power amps? which I know absolutely ZILCH about. This whole venture started when my good old Sony AV 920 died after 15 years of service back in June. I upgraded to a HK AV 525 that I found on Ebay and now I'm thinking about Pre Amps, Power Conditioners and lord knows what else. Yes, I confess.. I've recently joined HT's 10 step program. Rhi

It looks to me like you've been very resourceful with the space you have available -- I sure couldn't do as well. Having seen your opportunities for setting up the surrounds, I went and dug around a little on the KG bookshelves. Any of the x.5 bookshelves would make a good sonic match, but unfortunately none come with Omnimount (or other bracket mounting) provisions attached. That means you'd have to, um, customize your speakers to hang them on the wall. To make things worse, they are all rear ported, so they have to be a few inches out from the wall. That would make shelf-mounting awkward. I retract my question and congratulate you on your shoehorning ability. ---------------- LOL! I told ya this was an awkward set up. If you look at the right side of the couch behind the lamp and the left side behind that vase with the flowers I have my old Cerwin Vega AT10's. They're not hooked up yet but I was considering using them as my back surrounds. Would I be better off getting a pair of KG bookshelf's and getting some stands and forget about the CV's? I'm not sure how the sound would be coming from them anyway because the table that the lamp is sitting on would block most of the sound on that speaker. There's a pair of KG 2.2's up for bid on Ebay at the moment. Might not be able to swing them right now but it might be something to think about. I can always sell the SS-1s easily on Ebay. I'll probably eventually sell them anyway because I'm not getting the volume of sound out of them that I'd like to. I haven't really put them to the test yet though because I just hooked them up this afternoon. I keep looking at them to see if there's a way I can lower them on so they're about 18" above the couch. Course, then I'd have to rearrange all my paintings... which btw are mine. Got any more suggestions or ideas, Olorin? Rhi

Have you considered a set of KG bookshelf speakers for the rears? ---------------- Hi Olorin, It's due to space. My living room is very narrow and just plain awkward with how it's layed out. I'm open to any suggestions and have attached a few pics here so you can get the gist of what I'm working with. Rhi
  5. I'll be receiving a pair of SS-1's on Monday. Initially I thought I could just hang them where I've got my old Bose speakers but after doing a bit of research I've heard it's best if you angle them downwards because of the way the sound is dispersed. My couch is up against the wall. I know it's best if it's out from the wall but that's not possible because of my living room being so narrow and I've only got about seven feet between the edge of my couch and my woodstove foundation. Question... is it difficult mounting these Omnimount 10 brackets to the speaker itself? Are the 10s efficient enough to hold the SS-1s or should I go with the Omni 20s? Is there an actual mounting bracket that comes with the SS-s?I'll have to mount the brackets to the wall because of the type of ceiling I have and don't think it'll hold it. Thanks for your help guys. Rhiannon
  6. Well, I just hung up with good ole Comcast and THIS time they told me that I can upgrade my box to one with digital audio outputs but they charge $25 for it. No biggee. They're coming out tomorrow so I'll let you guys know if that makes a difference. Rhiannon

Almost all of the Comcast delivered, HDTV programing comes through DD as decoded by my wonderful Pioneer 1014 A/V Receiver. It's optical into the receiver. All the HDTV programming, including the World Series champion RED SOX and the New England Patriots dynasty on NESN are DDigital, and sound great! Yeppers, that cheap little Pioneer combined with the el-cheapo BB purchased Klipsch Synergy IIIs are a sweet sounding TV experience! ---------------- Okay, rub it in Steve. I envy you all with HDTV setups. That's probably the last item on my list. I upgraded my old Cerwin Vega's to Klipsch KG 5.5's about two weeks ago and I am HOOKED on Klipsch! Since then I've won a KV3 and a pair of SS-1's on Ebay which should all be here on Monday. Next thing I'll be getting is a sub. But hey, ya gotta start somewhere. Just wish I could figure out this issue but I have a feeling it has something to do with just having analog outputs going into my HK 525 receiver. Rhiannon
  8. I checked to see if my Motorola was listed and it wasn't on that page but checking further into the site I think I found what looks to be mine. It's DCT2000. It has OPTIONAL digital outputs. I called Comcast back about six weeks ago when I began setting my HT system up and was told the only receivers that they have with digital outputs are for hi-def which is obviously a bunch of crock. I can live with not having full DD but I'd at least like to have sound coming out of all the channels and this problem occurs on a number of channels. Rhiannon
  9. Hi guys, This is my first post here. I've been lurking around for about two months and have learned lots. I just finished setting up my HT system and this lady is pretty darn proud because I've done it all myself. I have Comcast digital cable. The box I have is a Motorola. I don't know what model it is but it doesn't have digital audio outputs which sucks so I've got the RCA outputs going from the box to my receiver. I've noticed that a lot of channels come through as Dolby PLII (because of it being analog) but then I was watching the Sci Fi channel the other night and sound only comes out of the right channels. To make it even stranger, when a commercial comes on the sound switches to the left channels only! Aarrrgghhh... this is driving me nuts! All my settings are correct and everything else works fine. Can anyone shed some light on this? Rhiannon
