  1. I’m going to send this to ModWright for a check up. I haven’t used it in awhile until this morning. I found two of the switches pop the speakers and the volume pot is noisy. I’m also concerned about the choke/transformer that appears to have some pitting. There are a couple of other annoying things as well. I may end up keeping it depending on what needs to be done and what its going to cost me.
  2. These are no longer available, at least for now.
  3. Thank you Andy, sorry the timing was bad. They are great amps but I have decided to simplify my system.
  4. I have for sale a beautiful pair of Quicksilver Mini-Mite Mono Blocks that sound awesome! They come with a great quad of Genelex KT-77 power tubes and strong testing vintage Telefunken 12AX7’s made in Germany. As a kicker, I will throw in a second pair of strong Tele tubes. These are all long ribbed plate for the tube aficionados out there. They come with the original shipping boxes, long power cords, manual and they have consecutive serial numbers. They are wired Ultralinear. I obtained these amps from the original owner who used them sparingly and took immaculate care of them, as did I. They will accept virtually any 6L6 based power tube. They will be packed very well, double boxed, for safer shipping. Local pickup or a meet within a reasonable distance of Redding, CA is very possible. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Oh, these pair well with the ModWright preamp I have for sale. I would make someone a killer package deal! I’m asking $650.00 plus actual shipping and PayPal fees if applicable. Thank you, Mark
  5. How about $1,000 plus shipping for this fine pre-amp.... Comes with extra vintage tubes including a Matsushita 5AR4, remote, factory box etc.
  6. Swapped in a strong trio of 6SN7’s and swapped pre-amps and she’s working and sounding great. Looks like the main issues were the pre-amp and the 6SN7 in the center which is the front end. The amp itself is fine. As far as I can tell, it’s good to go. Thanks!
  7. This excellent preamp is still available. I will reduce the asking price to $1200 which will include ground shipping to the lower 48. Thank you!
  8. It’s still too noisy for my liking. I’m going to have a technician I know check it out before I go further with it. Sorry I posted this before checking it out more thoroughly.
  9. Finished the Deoxit gig on the Sansui and it helped. I’m still getting some unwanted noise however. I’m going to hold off selling it for awhile until I get a fresh batch of tubes in it. A friend of mine has a “bazillion” tubes and I’m sure I can talk him out of some.
  10. I haven’t spent a lot of time with it but it is very revealing. When I hooked it up to the Forte II’s I noticed some blow type noise through the left speaker. After swapping some tubes and other troubleshooting, I found the balance control on my Sansui integrated, using it as a pre-amp, needs a bit of cleaning. I will hopefully get to cleaning it later.
  11. It’s called a “Beam-Pentode” that was originally used in TV Horizontal applications.
  12. Here’s another, I will post more later, thanks!
  13. I have a classic, almost cult like, tube amplifier built by Jim Nicholls. My friend had this built in, at least it was completed, in July, 2014. After paying over $1800 for it, he never used it. You would have to know my friend to understand. I had a technician friend of mine bring it up an his Variac, slowly, and check the voltages. It came up just fine and everything works as it should. I have played it for about an hour through my test speakers and it sounds great. I’m going to try it with the Forte’ II’s later. Power tubes are GE black plate 6BG6’s with exposed grid, basically a 6L6. Driver and phase inverters are the plentiful and cheap 6SN7. It uses two 5U4 GB rectifiers, hence the large power transformer. This is basically a highly modified Magnavox pull. I do have some correspondence paperwork between Jim and my friend Richard I will include. It gives some unique insight on the building process including the installation of a stand-by switch. Even though it was built over four years ago, it ie essentially new. It probably needs a bit of breaking in I would think. One nice feature is he installed a detachable power cord. I would like $750 for it plus shipping via FedEx ground. I will try to post some pictures, thanks!
  14. It’s the standard version but was sent to ModWright to have the tube power supply upgrade. Don’t know if they did the cap upgrade? I will try to post a picture of the inside. Oh, I will toss in a strong testing Matsushita 5AR4.
  15. I have an excellent condition ModWright SWL 9.0 Linestage Pre-amps with the upgraded tube power supply. It works flawlessly and sounds great. It comes with the original box and packing, remote control, quality power cord and spare vintage input tubes. The power supply tube is a modern Genelex Gold Lion GZ34. Lots of positive reviews on line for this pre-amp. I am only selling it to simplify my system. I’m asking $1300 which will included shipping to the lower 48. I prefer PayPal Friends & Family or please include the fee. Thank you!
  16. Hey Jim, I did some serious listening yesterday with The Fisher and the modern tube gear. The new stuff just can’t seem to give me that low end punch of the vintage Fisher iron. Yeah the midrange and highs are a bit cleaner but I’m a bottom dweller at heart. I need to feel the low E and the kick drum without a “one note wonder.” Oh, that would be my description of most subwoofers I have used. There may be a Modwright preamp and Quicksilver mini-mites for sale soon?
