  1. To answer a few of your questions: I have the the "TYPE AB" crossovers. The waxpaper on the capacitors looks dried out and shrunken. There is also corrosion on some of the connections and the screw terminals. I have access to another receiver that I'm going to try hooking up. If it yields no difference, I'll have to convince my dad into letting me borrow his Crown amp/pre-amp combo. I also thought about the blown diaphram thing, but don't I have the opposite problem? (blown diaphrams sound better at low volume and bad at high volume)
  2. Just out of curiousity, what goes wrong in the crossovers over time? There is quite a bit corrosion on them, but does anything else go bad? Do the caps dry out?
  3. What crossovers would you guys reccommend? I've heard mention of ALK and Bob Crites before. Would I be looking at a rebuild or a replacement?(they're in pretty rough shape). What should I expect to pay? Thanks for the help. I have the original crossovers still in the speakers. I'd have to look to see if they have a model # on them. I've also seen some on eBay before.
  4. I bought a set of Belle's (vintage 1984) from a local guy a few weeks ago and have set them up at my house. What I'm noticing is the midrange sounds muffled/compressed at lower volume levels. It is particularly noticeable with vocals, esp. with a male singer. Do you guys have any idea what could be causing it? I realize it's hard to know what I'm talking about without hearing it. The problem seems to dissappear once the volume knob goes past about 1/4 of the way on an old-fashioned volume knob. The really strange thing is, they sound better than just about anything I've heard at about 1/3 volume (which is quite loud). The mids and highs really come alive at that level, and the sound quality is exceptional. It's almost like these speakers are Dr. Jeckl and Mr. Hyde depending on were the level is set. Here is some more info about my set-up that may also be influencing the sound: - I have a fairly cheap Sony stereo reciever that is about 7 years old (100wx2) - I have 9 foot ceilings - There is not much "soft" furniture or any curtains in the room, which has plaster walls - The crossovers definitely look like they need to be replaced and are rather corroded. I plan on upgrading to a "real" amp and replacing the crossovers in time, but I would like to adress the most immediate need first. Any ideas on what may be the culpret?

  6. Somehow I posted this twice. Whoops. There is also currently an 24 hour auction for a set of La Scalas with free shipping (next day air). Wouldn't next day air on a set of these run well over $1k? http://cgi.ebay.com/BEAUTIFIL-Set-of-Klipsch-La-Scala-Floor-Speakers_W0QQitemZ8387501804QQcategoryZ543QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem He also mentions that ebay e-mail isn't working. I think I'll send this guy my credit card info.
  7. Atlantic City, too. I wonder if they were from a mob boss's garage sale?
  8. One day auction, buy it now for $1100. The seller also claims free shipping. I contacted them via e-mail, and haven't got a response yet. This has to be too good to be true. What do you guys think? http://cgi.ebay.com/World-renown-Klipsch-Corner-Horns-remarkably-uncommon_W0QQitemZ5669854482QQcategoryZ40104QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

  10. Do you run your's as a pre-amp or as your amp? How many watts does it push per channel? I've been looking at getting a vintage receiver and HK is pretty good quality stuff.
  11. Sometimes a bad thing can be a good thing. We had a terrible ice storm a couple of nights ago(gotta love that Michigan weather) and it knocked out the power for about 100,000 people in the tri-city area. The seller lost his power (which isn't good) but so did a few of the other people who planned on stopping by to look at them. The seller says he had several people contact him about stopping by to listen to them, including a guy who owns a local stereo shop. However, it turns out I was the only person who actually stopped to look at them, as everyone else was preoccupied with hooking up generators and trying to stop their water pipes from freezing. The seller went through the trouble of hooking his system to a generator so I could have a listen to them. They sounded AWESOME!! Pops, who owns a set of Khorns, was impressed. My dad and I did the "cover the driver" test on the high and mid horns, and they all work fine. The crossovers work, but look like they could stand a rebuild down the road. I couldn't wait to get home and bid on them. I was also able to get the story behind the speakers from the seller. He bought them from a buddy of his that he served in the Navy with for 12 years. The guy took these speakers all around the world for 12 years, which explains why they are so dinged up. I ended up paying $1276 for them, plus about $8 gas to pick them up. Not a bad deal. Now, I'm going to need some info about refinishing these down the road. I plan on replacing all of the bad veneer strips around the bass horn and along the bottom of the speakers. The finish on the tops of the speakers are pretty scratched up, but nothing really deep. I see someone mentioned Watco Danish oil. Do you think I could sand these down and try Watco oil on them? I used to work at a paint store in college, and we sold that product. There were a loyal following of old-timer wood workers who swore by the stuff. I don't want to re-veneer the tops unless I absolutely have to. What do you guys think?
  12. I talked to the seller on the phone just after dinner tonight. I'm going over tomorrow night to look at them. He also said he can hook them up for me to listen to. I plan on bringing my dad along, who is a self-professed Klipsch expert. Talking about prices, it's funny. My dad was looking at his receipt for his Khorns and La Scalas tonight. He paid something like $1200 for his finished La Scalas with grills brand new in around 1980. His Khorns were only around $2000 brand new in 1988. It's amazing what these speakers are going for now. As far as ending the auction early, one of the first things the seller mentioned to me on the phone was that he refuses to do so. And apparently, there's also one other local guy who plans on stopping by to look at them. Thanks for the tips guys. Between my dad and I, I think should be able to figure out what's up with these speakers. I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow night.
  13. I know they'll probably go for more than $899. I think I'd be willing to spend $1200-$1300 on the pair, but not too much more. I'm going to contact the guy to go see them in person. I think if they're still in good condition component wise and sonicly, I'll probably make a run at them. Borrowing my buddy's pick-up and $8 worth of gas sure beats a several hundred dollar frieght charge. How much was a set of Belle's new when they stopped making them? I'm guessing $4500 or so? With the prices people are paying for used Heresy's on ebay now, I figure a set of these in this price range is hard to beat.
  14. Hi guys, I've been shopping for my first set of Klipsch speakers (my dad has been a big fan of them since before I was born). I've been planning on buying a set of Heresy's on Ebay because that's about the only place I seem to be able to find any used sets, and furthermore it's the only Heritage speaker that's practical to ship. Anyway, when I was browsing, I came across this set of Belle's on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Klipsch-Belle-Speakers_W0QQitemZ5865982915QQcategoryZ61378QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Normally, I wouldn't be interested in such large speakers due to the cost of shipping, but these happen to be about 15 min away from my house. My question is, how hard would it be to fix the veneer on these? Do you think I would be able to find an approximate match to replace the missing strips? Bear in mind, I would be happy with less than perfect, I just don't want them to look like total crap. Also would it be practical to sand them down and re-finish the entire speaker to obtain a closer match (I'm semi-skilled at wood working/finishing) if I could find some veneer that was relatively close? $899 is pretty cheap for a set of Bell's, but I'm not sure if I could make them look decent or if it's worth the trouble. What do you guys think? Also, should I have doubts about how well these speakers were kept and what kind of condition the components are in if they look this poorly on the outside? (because I do)
