  1. OK.... I'm confused (not that hard to do)..... I would also like to do either an x-over upgrade or re-build. I have vint 81 with type B-2 x-overs. I also noticed that this was the only style to reverse polarity on the squawker and tweet. I read through all ALK's notes on his re-build. I also saw what Dean G said about "use Al's original design". Does that mean don't change out the 1.3Mhy's for 2.0 and 2.4's to smooth out the impedance mis-match? I usually drive my corns with EL34's or sometimes a Citation II so I'm not going for low volume. I know the cap's in those corns are tired. So it's probably time to do something with them. So for a re-cap (no pun intended):

    1- Just a re-cap

    2- Re-cap w/autoformer

    3- Re-build with ALK (original)

4- Re-build with ALK (impedance improving)

    ....Thanks

  2. I have been reading a lot of buzz about KT-88's recently and wanted to change things up a bit. I have a quad of S.E.D.'s in there now and I never bias them per the citation spec. I bias them down a bit. I've rebuilt several Cit II's with Jimmy's kits with great sounding success. Fortunately, I'm lucky enough to know Jimmy personally and yes.... he is a bit biased (no pun intended) when it comes to the Chinese tubes. I know what he'll tell me if I ask him about the KT-88sc's. I think that's why he doesn't carry them. Anyway, I'm looking for tube with a little "sweeter" midrange and without good KT-90's that Jimmy likes so much in production, I don't know where to look. Any other ideas are welcome.

  3. And the other side.

Since it was made in 1989 it has toroidal power and output transformers, 1% metal film resistors, polystryrene and polypropylene capacitors, and can be switched from ultralinear mode to triode mode. List for 2 was 4000, this pair cost me 500 bucks.

Those EL34's look VERY tired.... The shinny getter's on the top of them are almost gone... Bet they would sound even BETTER with new EL34's!!!! [D]

  4. Congratulations on the new Klipschorns!

You have been given some good advice about refreshing the caps on the crossover. This is small step. You can order the caps from Parts Express and it will only set you back $15-20. I believe Solen caps would be fine.

You will soon get advice about swapping drivers and adding elaborate crossovers, spending huge amounts on tube equipment, etc. All this can get very expensive and the price to value ratio is difficult to determine ahead of time. So let me give my other piece of advice. After you swap the caps, don't do anything. For the next several months just concentrate on making sure the cabinets are in corners and listen to them. Enjoy them. There is always time to tweak later on. But first you should get to know them. Later on if you need to tweak, then you will have a better baseline for comparison.

Hey Tom, Tube Equipment?? Huge Amounts??? I'm lucky I have a somewhat understanding wife..... I think she's planning to use it all for our kids college fund!!

  5. Thanks again..... unfortunately, they're not mine... my close friends though. We had to go take my truck to go pick them up. I think if I came home with those, they would stay, and my @ss would be out on the curb! It was bad enough when I came home with the Conwalls!!!

I hear what Al is saying, but I don't think he'll go for a horn swap out. I pretty sure he would like to keep the horns stock. I agree that those caps have to go! which one of you guys keeps caps that can be used in that system in stock?

  6. Thanks guys... I'll tell you as much as I can remember from briefly seeing them today. The mids are the pv-5v something alinco drivers I think. There were 2 caps "soldered" in parallel. 1 more cap with screw on nutz over to the right and the inductors looked like spindles. I didn't open the LF cab.

AL, what do you mean by "Replace" the top section?

  7. They are STOCK as stock gets. ... and in DAMN good condition!!! Yes, these are the ones from Brooklyn.. You had to see the stairs we had to come down. The guy we got them from, couldn't have been a nicer guy... He just couldn't make it work in his LR. Just as well, he had a pair of Genesis hooked up to an 8B that I drooled over..... ;-)

Bob, When you say rebuild... do you mean start from the ground up? I can see the caps, but do the inductors go out of spec with time?

  8. .

... UM.... Something look out of place here???? Look where's he's cabled up...... I don't think that was intended as the input.....

You're right. Unless there is something different about the 50's crossover, that speaker cable is hooked directly to the woofer. Wonder what that would sound like?

Idunno... Hey Pat... Why dont you hook them up to the "Input" on the crossover and tell us if anything changes.... [;)]

  9. Hey guys, I don't post much, but when I get a chance to show the system.... I can't resist!

Here's my 2 channel setup in my sun room (looking out the windows at night is nice too).

To make nice with the wife... I have to share the room with the 2 year old.. Good thing he likes music!
