  1. I broke down and bought a real pair. I plan on making the box first, to see if I like them, then perhaps do the real mod on the cabs. I bought a set of SETs, my 2A3 Moondog amps and a BBX preamp. Have spent more money that I should have, being self indulgent. With a son getting married next weekend, the youngest heading back for his junior year tomorrow morning and a trip to China in Oct., I don't really need anything else to do... I really want to get things finished up with my gf, (reason for my trip to China), as she leaves Monday from the Philippines to go back to her teaching job in Nanchang. Man... that has to be confusing for everyone reading this. The short story would be... things will settle down and I'll build the ported boxes, to see if I like it (and do tests for Mike).

The credit for your LS clones shouldn't go to me. I just passed along info from others. [:$]

I think you will like the mod if you ever get a chance to build your boxes...if not, it will be easy for you to go back stock.

Good luck on your trip to China...and say hello to all my kin folks!!!

I don't give you all the credit, but you deserve a lot of it because you answered all those hundreds of private emails that I sent you!

This is a great forum with lots of very knowledgeable people. I could not have done the project without it.

  2. Santa,

The ported version is a little lower in efficiency compared to the stock LS. Very cool that you still like them, especially after all the work you put into them.

    Bruce

    Bruce,

Did you ever get started on your project?? (ported LS) Last time we spoke you were going to try and build a set yourself. I really have enjoyed mine and since it was a diy project it makes me like them more...I have to admit I could not have built them without your help and the help of this site.

  3. Rotorhead, you have been living with those for some time now. Do you still like them, and can you give a comparison to the stock LaScala?

    Bruce

    Hello Bruce,

Good to hear from you! Yes, i like them alot... I recently purchase a set of real LS and was listening to the two together and I do like the way mine sound over the real LS. I do have to pump up the volume a little to get the deep bass response that I was wanting. I sometimes kick in a sub woofer to listen to them low.

My friends who see the two think the real LS are the ones I built! The home builds look so much better than the unfinished LS that I purchased. When I show them the photo's,. that's when they believe...

Sorry, guys I am not as technical as you all. I have no way of measuring sound except with my ears... I just know what I like to hear.

  4. Thanks guys,

For all your advice. I'm just looking for another project and though I would try a set of klipshorns. I don't build them to sell or resale just for my own personal satisfaction. I will check out the other links and make a descion from there.

But if and when I do decide to build, I will for sure be back on this board! What a great group of folks on this site!

  5. Hello guys,

Sorry, I haven't responded lately. I just had a new edition to my family...(boy).

I'm still looking for a set of klipshorn plans if anyone has a set to share. I would like to look at them anyway to see if I am up to the challange! Maybe more than I can handle... I did recieve a set of cornwall plans but decide to try the klipshorn instead.

Thanks for all who have responded,

    Santa Lee

  6. Hello,

Does anyone on the fourm have a set of cornwall plans that they would not mind sharing? I build a set of LS last year from a set of plans that I got off this fourm and would like to build a set of cornwalls. I tried to do a search but, it yield very little results. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Santa Lee

  7. I just pick up a Yamaha MX 1000. Can someone tell me what would be a go pre amp to

work with this amp? Anyone know the difference in a Yamaha C4, C40 or CX600 ?

I know that the C4 was made around 1982, any one with info on the other two? and what's the diffrence?

    Thanks

    S Lee

  8. Daddy Dee,

I actually posted my build photo's on the forum. I just don't remeber the thread name! (duh!) I think it was under updates and mods\porting LS's.

Maybe someone on the forum can help you find it. If not I can see if I still have the photo's on my computer and email them direct to you.

I built a set of LS's a couple of months ago and them wound up buy a set from a local guy. I ported mine thought the top and like the way it sounds better than the original ones.

  9. Bruce,

Yes, I did use Bob's tweets. I just had a chance to buy some origanals and was just wondering which ones would be best. Since I've built my LS, I ran across a set of origanal LS that I pick up and it had the round mags in it. Can't really hear too much diffrance in the two (origanal vs clone) highs seems to be higher in origanals. So I though I would pick up a set and just try it in my clones. Maybe I can't hear much diffrance in the origanals because the caps might be old and need replacing?

  10. Neil,

good question... I just pick up a set of LS in my area. This guy purchase 6 of them back in the 80's. I was told he paid 550.00 a piece for them. I too was wondering if i needed to get the caps redone in them. They don't seem to have the punch like the other LS that I had my hands on. Just have no way to compare them now.

  11. Guys,

That was some great info But, way over my head.

Doc, I was wondering if the woofer that I am using was not hitting as solid as the K33. I got the woofer from Bob C. and he stated that this woofer would go much lower than the K33. You present a good ideal about changing woofers and giving that a try. Will Klipsch sell me one? $$$? Just returned the factory LS to the owner...

Yes, i stuck with the 4" ports (dia & 7" long) and they are flaired on both ends. I was telling Marvel in a early email that I notice a change in the way it sounded after I got them home. I think a lot of it had to do with the size and position that i have them in at my house.

The back panel where the ports are mounted is removable so I can go in and adjust my ports to my likings. Still playing with the ports.

There is more bass (deeper) coming from the ported ones than the factory ones. But I don't think the bass is as solid coming out of my speakers. I believe for the deeper bass one must give up on the solid bump! that's just my opion, Maybe some of the experts can chime in and explain. But over all I am satisfied with the project. Also, seems that at lower volume the bass really does not kick in.

    Santa

  13. Ok, Bruce

The ports are not block as bad as is looks in the photos and the bass is really not bad. I will take your advice and report back Monday and see if there is any difference.

To answer you question from an early post. I will stain them a red oak finish and put a gloss clear on them. A friend of mine heard them last night and like them better than the factory LS. So far I have a 3 to 1. 3 for me and 1 for the factory LS's. Maybe they are just being nice!

    Santa

Think I will call them La Santa's!!!

  14. I remembered with no stuffing, the bass seem somewhat distored. Also serious vibrations on the top. I was thinking last night, what do you guys think about using some stuff called egg crate? It is used as a bed coushing. You can get this stuff at Wal-Mart or Target. It is made of foam and has fingers sticking out.
