So I'm building a DIY sub and I might have an issue. I hooked up my Dayton RSS390HF 15" in free-air to listen at low level and check out the quality. I would be surprised if i gave it more than a watt or two and with the input gain at 50% on my Audiosource amp three it sounded great. However, when I turned the gain to around 75% and above I got an electrical sounding hum from the driver. This is in bridged mono, I'm sure I've connected everything right. The hum was present above around 50% in both my shielded sub RCA cable and non-shielded RCA cable. The amp is rated at 400 watts mono at 8 ohms but I've read many people on audioreview using it to power subs and some expert review was using it to power 4ohm speakers. The hum is not present with the gain maxed going to my Mains. Do you think this is a ground loop issue? That is what I'm learning towards. Thanks guys.

Website cut them off. I don't know how to resize but you get the idea of the amp. Anyway, I had a chance to hook it up to my system tonight. I went in not expecting much change in the sound but wow I was wrong. I hooked the amp up via the front pre-outs on the Yamaha RX-V659, I set the amp gain to half and used the receiver to adjust the volume. I started out with the cd Miles Davis kind of blue in my xbox360 via optical connection. I was shocked to hear a lot of hiss and the left horn sounded VERY honky. I was afraid it was the amplifier but after switching material I quickly realized the recording of the CD was awful. After putting in some other material I was surprised by how much cleaner and fuller it sounded. I even for a very short period turned down the receiver gain and turned the audiosource to max to check for distortion. There was none or atleast I couldn't tell the difference. It really was a big difference between the amp in the Yamaha. Soundstage was better and I realized it made bad recordings much more obvious. Dynamics also seemed improved when I listened to some classical and scores from the Star Wars (hell yeah). This is the first time I've powered my RF-5s with an amp and am really really impressed. I think I might keep this to power the fronts and look into another option for the subwoofer, I really like it that much. For an amp I paid 165 dollars for I really could not be happier. I'm not sure all audiosource gear is this quality but for a beginner amp I don't think you could do better. There is a new one on ebay for $299 and I think it's probably worth even that price.

Just picked up a Audiosource Amp 3 locally. I have a Yamah RX-v659 but this is my first amp ever. It came with the Manual and is in MINT condition. Paid a very good price for it (165) and the first thing that struck me was how heavy it is. 28 pounds for a little low-mid range amp like this is pretty impressive to me. It's built very well and the internals look very good for an amp of this pricepoint. It will do 150 watts x 2 at 8ohm or 400 watts bridged at 8 ohm. The manual says it is stable down to 2 ohm but to not go lower than that and reviews I've read on audioreview confirmed that. Hometheaterhifi did a review and confirmed it puts out the rated power which is very nice as sometimes power ratings can be misleading. They gave the amp an awesome review and I'm very excited to hook it up to my RF-5s but it's a little late right now [
]. I'm going to use it to power a DIY sub once I get the enclosure built. The successor of this amp goes for $699 new and has slightly worse specs. There is one of these brand new on ebay for $299 and even though I paid much less than that I think it would still be worth it as a budget amp. I'll let you guys know what I think of the sound/output when I hook it up tomorrow but from what I've read I should be more than pleased. Definitely recomend going the amp route. Probably would not be able to tell the difference between the models soundwise. However, if you could get into the high end stuff you would probably be able to.

Never heard cornwalls but I love them. They're the only heritage speaker I could stand looking at. Not very into the vintage look I suppose...

I would go Klipsch. Even if you find them a little bright (I don't) you will be impressed by the dynamics, output, sensitivity and how they just make music fun to listen to. They're also great for HT use. Are you set on that sub?You could do so much better for the $300 or so it costs. Elemental Designs for instance makes the A2-300 that will literally destroy the Infinity in every possible way. Stay away from mainsteam budget brands like those. There are much much better lesser known options available.

Yeah I saw that amp but it does not have a HP filter like you recomended. Perhaps my Yammy Rx-v659 does in the sound menu?

I sell you a used one in good (very good) condition for $618 pick-up or $700 shipped. Dont have manual, box or calibration mic though. Can buy the mic for around $30 from klipsch. Selling it for what I paid for it but only to fellow forum members.

Thanks for all the help michael, I do love the Klipsch for music and it does fare decently on low output. It actually sounds pretty good in that corner but I need to sell it for some cash, and that's why I'm building the DIY. I thought It would look pretty cool to have 3 ports on the bottom of the from baffle where the driver would be and according to winish (3) 3" ports with a length of 17" would have a mach of .04 which from what I've read is right around the sweet spot. I should probably calculate the area though of the ports because I believe the 3" ports would be a little more restrictive.

Thanks michael, I made a outline of the floor it will be on with mspaint, I can e-mail it to you if you'd like. Don't know how to put an image on here. I would like a good bit of low bass output because I wont be here forever. Box can be up to 11^3ft (was planning on 10.7) and I figured it to be in the rectangle shape similar to a cornwall (40h x 25w x 22d). Thanks again for helping me, I know you are very well verse in the subwoofer field and I really appreciate your time.

Thank you so much michael, the is smallish but it does open up to a lot of other rooms. It is on the main floor of a condo It would be very hard to describe with mspainting a sketch. Suffice to say the room open into about as much as it could but there are two full walls and 1/2 wall. Want the parameters or did you find them?

Wow that is a pretty giant port. I just ran the number I got from Winisd through bassbox and the results are absolutely terrible. This has been the longest, most frustrating two nights and I don't even know where to go from here.I never thought designing a ported enclosure for (1) 15" driver could be such a massive ordeal. If someone has a few minutes could they please help me with this?

Would love to see pictures of the cabinet when you get that completed. Like members said though I would stay away from mixing reference and heritage although the RS could be a decent match. Maybe look into klipsch cinema stuff seems like that would be a closer match. If you are interested in my sub though, I've read good results of the RT series being mixed with heritage.Did you pull the trigger on thatYammy reciever?

Found you a Yamaha Rx-v765 reciever for $394.99 shipped. It is one of their higher models and has 95w x 7. All the hdmi and stuff you would need going into the future. Wow Tim that is an absolute incredible steal you got on the speakers, free reciever too! I personally would go Yamaha they generally get awesome reviews and are great bang-for-the-buck. Audioholics reviewed my reciever and it actually made over the stated power.... too bad it doesnt have hdmi [

Thanks a bunch for all the input brandon, sub probably wont ever be played to the limit but the filter is probably a good idea anyway. Maybe I will give the behringer a look, it seems like quite a few people use them to power their subs. I will look into a larger port but dont they need to usually be longer? I would like to have the port on the driver side but that side will only be 22" deep and 20.5" deep internally. What do you think about the output figures? Do the look good?

Thanks brandon, I've had the Dayton 15" HF for almost 2 years just sitting around so that is absolutely what i'm using. Looks like having a 10^3 enclosure built will be about 200 and I'm expecting the amp to be around 150-200. Don't want a behringer though, I only want around 500 watts and the Behringer's are all like 2000. I want a good clean 500 not a cheap 2000.Anyway, let me run these number by you, i'm kind of intermediate in subwoofer knowledge but the figures seem really good so let me know what you think. Using winisd in the 10^3 box (11.6 cubic foot are bigger but that is just too big) with either a 4" x 8.2" circle port or a 4 x 4 x 11.25" square port the figures are: 100w/1m no room gain 107db even from 500 to 30hz with an f3 of 17.4 hz. 15hz is at 101db, 13hz is 96.8db, 12hz is 94 db with 10hz all the way down to 87.9db. I'm not sure how accurate WinIsd is but I could definitely live with those figures. Please let me know if you think those are off or if they are even good for a budget diy sub.

Four in twelve months? Really? That would lead me to believe it could be something with your electrical or you are the most unlucky guy in the world. You know other companies make subwoofers right? There are awesome options in the $300 range. Look at elemental designs.
