  1. I am using a Denon 5900 with my Denon 5803 av/r. This is a great combo for movies and music dvd,s but I dont like cd,s through this sysyem. It may be me because I am not very knowledgeable about these componets. I much prefer my Rega Appllo with my Vintage Sansui when listening to cd,s.

I am pretty impressed with what I hear on cds, but I must admit, I don't have a high-end cd player to put it up against.

The best disc player I own, (besides the 5900) is the Denon 2910, which is a bit newer technology than the 5900 and seems to do a good job retrieving the info. on the disc properly.

I should probably hunt down a very high-end cd player for a good price in order to make an accurate assessment.

  2. I picked up a mint condition 5900 for $200.00 a couple of days ago and I have to say it is an improvement in sonic bliss over my beloved 2910, even though it is older technology.

This was a very well spent $200.00, I think.

Is anyone else using this old dvd player? What are your thoughts on it's musical characteristics?

  3. I don't have any experience with the drs series of Phase Linear amps, but, my series one 400 works well with my ESS Heil AMT1B's.

I have read here that the amp is not a good match with horns, and my experience with the amp and my Belle's appears to be evidence of that.

Although it is not a terrible matchup, it certainly does not sound as good as the AMT1B's do in combination with the 400.

  4. Thank you everyone for your input. Especially Marshall, for the very detailed procedure for refinishing these.

Unfortunately, I have been scared off of the task and will live with them the way they are for now.

I don't have a shop area or other area available to me for this project and quite frankly I don't want to start something I can't finish.

I have an attention span deficit. LOL!

I will wait till finances are better and hire someone that has experience to do the job.

    Thank you all again, Tom

  5. Does one have lacquer on it and the other oil?

I've never owned Belle's. Are the woofer grill covers removable?

    Greg

The Clear Oak Belle looks and feels like it is raw.

The Oak Oiled is just that, oiled. It appears a couple of shades darker and the wood grain stands out much more than the clear one (darker and more prominent).

The grill covers are not removable.

  6. I would like to get my Clear Oak Belle to match my Oiled Oak Belle. Can anyone with experience clue me in on a procedure that is not too difficult for getting these babies to match?

I have no experience working with wood and am looking for a simple method to get these looking as close to the same as possible.

I don't know what all will be involved besides cleaning the cabinets well. Do I need to sand? Do I need to use any chemicals? What is the best product to use for a good deep clean on these? Do I use a stain? Is there a particular Oil I can rub into them that will give me the desired finish?

    Please help.

    Thank you, Tom

    Tom b.,

You have only one of each, or one pair of each??

    Roger

    I have one of each.

  8. I have a friend with a pair of Altec 411-8A 15" woofers and a pair of JBL Model 136A 15" woofers.

Both pairs have been tested and are in good condition.

I am trying to help him find out what the fair market value of these things are and have not had much luck. I found some info. on Ebay, but, I never take those prices too seriously.

Anyone have an experienced opinion on worth?

    All help welcomed.

    Thank you, Tom

  9. They both seem to have blown tweeters. I will replace the diaphragms or replace complete tweeters. Either way should not be too

Agreed. Bob's tweeters sound quite a bit better tha

    much trouble.

Why not go for a pair of Bob Crites's CT125 tweeter

s? They definitely sound better than K-77s and they're not that expensive.

n the K77s, and at times, I prefer Bob's tweeters to the JBL and Beyma alternatives.

Welcome to the Belle club. I'll never sell mine.

    Enjoy.

    Carl.

I've talked with Bob about the diaphragms. I would be lying if I said the thought of Bob's tweeters hasn't been on my mind. I guess I just need to get past the idea of keeping them original. Bob told me that his tweeters actually go to 20,000hz, which is better than the original at 17,000hz.

I called Bob the same day I picked them up. I know that he is the go-to-guy when it comes to upgrades. And yes, his prices are very reasonable and you couldn't ask for a nicer guy.

Any ideas on how to oil the Oak Clear one to match the Oak Oiled one?

This is a dream come true for me. I have been lusting for a pair of Belle's for a pretty long time

    Tom

  10. I couldn't stand the thought of not being able to use these beauties for a couple of weeks due to the lack of tweeters.

I disconnected the tweeters from the crossover and hooked up a pair of peizo driven Conradial horns that I had sitting around not being used for anything and now I have Belle's to listen to. I"m sure they don't sound near as good as the drivers that these things were designed to incorporate, but, they don't sound half bad.

These will have to do until I get the K-77's back in business.

    Yee Haw!

  11. I'm glad I don't own any cats. I would hate to think about cleaning all the cat hair off the grills. I fear it would be a never ending task.

Cheap lint roller , no problem .

Yeah, I guess that would work alright.

I know how cats are. I would have to relinquish ownership to them.

They do want to run things, you know!

  12. I cleaned these puppies up a little bit and to my surprise most of the mars and rubbed spots on the cabinets were just dirt and what ever else adhered to the veneer.

    They look quite nice now.

  13. I finally fell across a killer deal on a pair of Belle's.

    Three catches.

    1) They are both Oak, but, one is oiled and the other clear. Needless to say not sequential serial #'s. S/N 265394700 and S/N 201490798. I think this makes one made in 94' and the other 90', if I read the date codes correctly.

    2) They both seem to have blown tweeters. I will replace the diaphragms or replace complete tweeters. Either way should not be too much trouble.

    3) They are not perfect. Some dings and chips, but, nothing that stands out. They are all small blemishes, a few of them are on edges.

They are a bit dirty, so they will need a good cleaning. Small price to pay for picking them up for $650.00.

I am jazzed about these babies.

I would have loved Brazilian Rosewood or some other exotic veneer, but, can't have it all.

What is the best product to clean these with and strip the old oil off so i can try to get them to look the same. I have never worked with wood before so I really don't know what all I need to do to refinish them both so they can match. The wood grain isn't too far off, so, if I can get them the same shade of oiled oak, I will be happy.

Any thoughts on procedures about how to acomplish this? Any input will be appreciated.

    Tom

  14. Depends on what Denon amp and what HK receiver and what shape everything is in. 4.2's around my neck of the woods can be had for $150-200 in very good shape if you are dilligent and don't jump at the first ones you come across.

    Where are you located?

    Tom

  15. I have owned KG5.5's, 5.2's, 4.5's, 4.2's, 4's and 3.2's. Out of all of these KG models, I believe the 4's are the best bang for the buck.

If I had to choose my favorites, I would go with KG 5.5's as the best and KG4's as the runner up.

I have a pair of KG4's and a pair of 5.5's that I will keep and have no desire to part with.

Klipsch got those exactly right. They are great for small to medium sized rooms and work well with vintage units, such as an HK430.

I would suggest keeping your KG4's, but, if you can afford both, go get the 4.2's and check them out. You can always sell them if you choose.

    It's good to experiment.

  16. I don't have any experience with the G-8700DB, but, I do have experience with the 9090DB, 9090, and the 8080DB powering my Forte's and love what I hear. I have been rotating these three in and out of service for a little over a year. Before that I was using my Marantz 2275. I like the sound of the Sansui's better.

The 8700DB is a beautiful piece and I think you couldn't go wrong for that price if the unit is in excellent condition.

    Tom

  17. Try something new if you can afford to, but, hang on to your 5.5's. I sold my first pair of 5.5's and regretted it. I recently found another pair and am very happy to have been able to add them to my stable of assorted Klipsch and other types of speakers.

I have found that there are many good speakers out there and if you have the room and the ability to check different ones out, it can prove to be very interesting as well as fun.

  18. Well, I picked up the T-5's for $75.00. I couldn't find out any info. on price for these little buggers. They do, do the trick though.

Amazing that these little transformers can help bring this cartridge to fruition. Best sounding cartridge I have ever owned. I am impressed.

Now my thoughts wander off to, "I wonder what a more expensive moving coil cart. would sound like?"

I think I need to stop and smell the roses first.

What an affliction this audio bug can be. LOL

    Tom

  19. I have come across a beautiful JVC Quartz Fully Automatic Turntable Model # QL-Y5F, that seems to play very well. It comes with an Ortofon MC 10 MK II cartridge and I am in need of a step up transformer.

My friend has two Ortofon T-5 step up transformers that he would be willing to sell me, but, neither one of us knows much about them. They are just cylinders that you hook in line with your turntable rca jacks. Is this all I would need to use to get proper volume out of my Sansui 9090db? What are these things worth? He says that they work properly.

    Any input will be appreciated.

    Thank you, Tom
