  1. I was just informed by my friend that the 970 I sold him is having issues. He states that the player will freeze up during scene changes and occassionally at other times while playing a dvd. I have never used this unit for dvds. I always used it for two channel cds.

At one point several months ago I let a friend check it out in a home theater application and he raved about how well it performed playing movies. This particular friend stated that it worked flawlessly for him.

Any thoughts on what might be going on with it? Is it just getting old and worn out? Could it be a simple fix? Anyone have similar problems?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks, Tom

  2. I picked up a new in the box 981 to replace my 970. I am curious, is the sound quality going to be the same, better or not as good?

I am only using it for two channel music. I haven't even taken it from the box yet and have already sold off the 970 to a friend, so I guess I'm stuck with it regardless.

I remember reading a thread that said the 980 is a bit better than the 981 for audio and I am just wondering if I might have waited for a 980 instead of grabbing this 981?

Is the difference in sound quality very noticeable, or , is it just slight?

The price, I thought at $75.00 was a good one, for new. What is the take on this price? Fair , low, or too much?

    Any remarks appreciated.

    Thank you, Tom

  3. I just finished endulging myself in the Jeff Beck, performing this week...live at Ronnie Scott's dvd. Man I thouroughly enjoyed this one.

I am just amazed at the level of his performance at this venue.

The one and only time I seen him in person was in the mi to late 70's. I don't remeber exactly what year, or month for that matter. Things are a little hazy in that time period for me. I do remember that I was totally floored with his performance back then.

Now that I think about it, he was playing with Jan Hammer. It must have been around 75' or 76'. I beleive he opened for Aerosmith and Aerosmith sucked.

Wow, it's starting to come back! Could this be a break through?

Has anyone else enjoyed this dvd? If so, what are your thoughts?

  4. beauty is in the eye of the beholder

why didn't he offer to refurbish them and split the profits with the university?

He works at the recycling plant where they were delivered to, and had already been inventoried.

He did not have that option.

He certainly wished he could have had an opportunity to get his hands on them. He stated that when the tech checked them, they were good components.

He tells me about brand new lcd and plasma tvs that come through there plus all kinds of old electronics, like them old tape macines (reel to reels), I have.

I think I need to see if they need some help down there. LOL

  5. I was just about in shock yesterday when my son-in-law came home from work. The company he works for recycles electronics.

He told me about three pair of Lascalas that came through the plant and were destroyed for recycling of their parts.

He knows what Lascalas are, because when I had mine here, he told me that he was impressed with them and someday would like a pair.

A major state university in the area sent them to be recycled. Here in this economy, when tuitions are being raised and budgets being slashed, how can one justify just throwing something of value, as these are, away? Why on earth would you not sell them as surplus or auction them off?

    This really chaps me.

    very disappointed, Tom

  6. I finally talked with seller and found out that he has decided to keep them. He is moving to a new home and is going to make a try at fitting them in.

I was relieved to hear that he was keeping them and that nobody else beat me to the punch. I know it's selfish, but, I would much rather hear about him keeping them instead fo someone else getting the killer deal.

  7. It is low, even for recent sales. What year, model and what type of crossover and finish do they have? Not that it matters, at that price, you can not go wrong.

I haven't had the opportunity to check them out yet. The seller claims they are in great shape, but, has not offered up any other info. on them. I am waiting to hear back from the seller with more info. and if I can check them out soon.

This would be something I have been waiting for for a very long time, if it pans out.

  8. I just picked up a satin black KLF 20 that sounds wonderful but has more than it's share of issues.

The outside of the cabinet is in pretty good shape, other than a back corner rounded and a couple of spots where the black paint has been chipped away. The grill is in dang near perfect condition.

The issues lie under the grill. The motor board is cracked in the upper right corner (does not rattle or vibrate at all) and the rubber grommet in that corner is pushed into the motor board a bit. The cover peg still connects fairly well.

The top woofer's dust cap is dented in pretty good and I may not be able to bring it back to it's original shape.

The bottom woofer has a crack in the poly carbon graphite cone. The previous owner put a piece of scotch tape over the crack.

How would I repair this crack?

The thing sounds wonderful. The defects that I have mentioned do not effect the sound what-so-ever. The speaker sounds fantastic. I have checked it out at all levels, including volume levels that no man should subject himself to.

My dilemma is, do I part it out and sell the undamaged parts ( which to me sounds like blasphemy) or do I keep it and possibly use it at some later date as a center for my Cornwalls?

Or, do I offer it up as is for $100.00?

I don't have a heck of a lot of storage room anymore.

Is there a market for good used high and mid drivers ?

What could one expect to get from the sale of these drivers?

  9. Is this a quality TT?

I am thinking about picking one up with a couple of xtra goodies for a couple of bills.

It comes with two xtra carts, (besides the one that's mounted) a Sennheiser hedphone set., some interconnects and a preamp or something to hook to the computer, a converter or something. Oh yeah, and the original carton with packing material.

    One owner.

I am not too savvy on this stuff. Just seems like it might be worth buying.

Any comments, suggestions or advice is more than welcome.

    Thanks, Tom

  10. Robin Trower- Bridge of Sighs

    Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards

Both of these CD's sound exceptional for being older recordings.

    Very good choice indeed!

I will have to pull out the vinyl and see if these two are as well done as the cd's are.

    Tom

    Well, just as I thought.

I will have to find new copies of these, as it seems, mine have been worn out just a tad.

Must have been that 70's thing!

  11. I, too, am curious about the general concensus on Hafler amps.

I picked up a DH-220 and a pair of B&W DM1400 speakers along with a Kenwood C-1 preamp and a Sherwood tuner for $195.00, (all in fantastic shape) a while back and have not put the amp in a system yet to get an idea of how it sounds. I know that the speakers sound and look great, but, I am curious about the amp. Quality, or just another amp?
