  1. Yeah.....read about that. Hope he be OK.

    And in a related matter......

Bruce Rossmeyer was killed while travelling to Stugis for the annual motorcycle rally. Not many outside the motorcycle community know of Bruce, but he was truly a self-made man/success story. He became the largest Harley dealer in the world and had the largest Harley dealership in the world. His Destination Daytona has to be seen to be believed. It's 150 acres of motorcycle dealerships, hotel, condos, accessories, etc. and is located just north of Daytona Beach. Never met Bruce but knew folks that did and they said he was as down-to-earth as anyone. His GEICO Buell race team has been doing very well lately. It's sad he died but I guess he died doing what he was passionate about - riding motorcycles.

    Sorry for the minor hi-jack.

  2. Let's see......

Monday was a left-over lime & cilantro marinated grilled chicken breast and a Coke.

Tuesday was chicken fingers from the buffeteria here at work which ain't bad if you use enough hot sauce [:(] and some sweet tea.

Wednesday was lunch out with a friend. We ate at a place with a Mexican buffet. My friend is of Mexican descent and has gotten me hooked on chilies toreados (deep fried jalapenos - no coating, just plop them in hot oil). Man they're good. But the next day......HO BOY! LOOKOUT!!!!

Today is left-over pizza and a Coke.

  3. After some damage .

Sorry Willy....but that sammich looks nasty. Bet it tasted better than it looked though. Smile

Man-oh-man did those comments about fried bologna and spam bring back memories. Back when my Dad was in the Air Force, I guess you could say we weren't "well off". Never knew what a real steak tasted like until I was almost 12. Up until then it was either flour coated & pan fried spam or hamburger steak or if we were lucky....cubed steak (where in the sam dickens did that term come from?) that my Mom would beat the crap out of with that pulverizer hammer-looking thing. And even then she'd used Adolf's meat tenderizer!!!

And that fritata thing reminded me of a quickie meal Mom would make. She'd put a little bit of Wesson oil in a fry pan, throw in some frozen french fries & chopped onions and let them cook a bit. Then she'd scramble two eggs and pour that in and when almost done, add a slice of Velveeta cheese.

Another sardine concoction......chop up some garlic (or use that already chopped stuff from a jar) and a bit of onion. Combine that and one or two cans of sardines in a bowl. Into the bowl, add a handful or so of cold left-over spaghetti and toss with a bit of olive oil and salt & pepper to taste.

  4. Again - thanks guys for all the kind words.

And I appreciate seeing other's workshops/garages/whatever. Well....except for cal blacksmith. His place don't count 'cause it's a home factory. LOL....... Sheesh, that place is big. It reminds me of our neighbor (Greg) behind us who's got a steel building about that size. My wife hates it when I visit Greg 'cause she says I get this look in my eyes that reminds her of what her son looked like on Christmas morning. Greg's got just about everything - a Bridgeport milling machine, 6' engine lathe, tube bender, car lift, etc., etc. In a separate building, which is an old barn original to his family and their sawmill days, is a bunch of wood working tools that I could spend days looking at for many are at least 100 years old or more. And then there is Greg himself - just a simple, local, single country boy with a high school education that don't cook 'cause "every kinda food I like they have at da Huddle House". LOL..... And a guy that can spec out a custom grind camshaft for his 402 small block stroker motor with custom designed & fabricated (by him) stainless steel headers and all sorts of other go-fast stuff he built. The guy is just amazing. Oh - and he makes some very nice home-made wine that'll knock you on your @ss.

As for tools & clutter.....give me time. But FWIW, I'm pretty good at filling up a space. See????

  5. Wow......that is some really nice looking heart pine. When you see so-called heart pine nowadays it's more likely just old pine and not really the "heart" of a pine tree. Not sure how old that stuff is, but it almost looks like it's fat-lighter which had me thinking the same thing as dtel - i.e. that must be some hard-as-nails stuff. A pine you don't see very often anymore but something I'm sure dtel would know about is long-leaf pine. I'm certainly no expert, but those boards sure look like heart long-leaf pine.

BTW - very nice work and a a very giving project. [Y]

(sigh.....maybe one day Tom's shop will grow up and have tools like that)

  6. This National Forrest sign in & of itself is not odd - but taken in context with what my friend Randy is doing just cracked me up. When he pulled over 'cause he couldn't hold it any longer and started "going" I thought for sure he'd seen the sign - but he didn't. I was laughing so hard that I almost didn't get the shot. It still cracks me up to this day.

  7. Not much really to add other than to say that I've had to deal with VW over billing errors and I feel your pain. Ironically, the 8 or so years I was with them, I had great service as far as making/receiving calls.

When I got married, the wife was with (under contract) Alltel and I was with VW and not under any contract. After doing some comparisons, I went on my wife's Alltel plan, we up'd our minutes slightly, and our total monthly bill (VW + Alltel) dropped by around $100. Honestly, the Alltel folks here are awesome. Seriously - I've not dealt with better customer service folks anywhere. In fact, the guy we dealt with said that the "company line" was to sell me a new phone but that since he knew my old Verizon Motorola was a CDMA, he'd make an attempt to get AllTel's system to "recognize it". After accessessing some phone menu's and calling his "geek friend", he got it to work. He went way above what he had to do and could've just spouted the company policy, but he didn't. Anyhow.........

    Keep at 'em winchester.

    Tom

  8. Yeah, but your shop is prettier Tom. I like all the outlets and checkered motif.

And although I went from groundbreaking to doors and electrical in three months, we just got the drives and walks poured, I still need to paint the durned thing, get the last bits of stone ordered for capping the wainscott wall, and landscaping is awaiting a week of dry weather.

It takes a year, no two ways about it. If this place looks 'done' and pretty by September I'll be lucky.

Now let's get those Heresies flipped upside down if they're not already. Doc can explain. I've done the same to my KP201's that are shelf mounted.

I had a 16 foot equipment trailer in mine for load out during the Indy Fest and plan on backing the boat in there today after it's inaugural voyage of the season.

    Michael

That's a very nice compliment - thanks Michael. Having to do as much of the work as I could to save some $$$$, plus working on it when time/weather permitted, plus trying to pay for it as I went, was the big factors in it taking so long. And as much as I hate to admit it, there were some weekends I just said "SCREW IT! I'm going riding." LOL....... But yeah, it can take longer than planned sometimes. What I found was that it was all the little detail stuff like caulking and trim and painting and touching up. Crap - I bet I spent 3 hours just trying to figure out the best layout for the cabinets!!

All the lower outlets are 20amp and there's (3) circuits - right wall, left wall, back wall. All the upper outlets are 15amp. The big honking outlets on back wall are 30amp 220V for future big mo' air compressor or whatever. I've got (2) 20amp 110V and (1) 30amp 220 stub-ups outside for whatever backyard project the wife throws at me. Hmmmmm.........outdoor theater has a nice ring to it donchathink??? All told, I've got a 200amp service to the building mostly 'cause it wasn't any more expensive than 120 or 150 amp.

And yes, the Heresy's have been "flipped" to get that woofer closer to the upper corners (know that trick already - I just look stoopid. hee, hee). Surprisingly, they put out a decent amount of bass, but all that volume - especially when the garage door is open - really sucks the bottom end out of them. I'll rememdy that with my Dr. Who aided sub. Good thing the closest neighbor is .25 miles away!

    Tom

  9. Looks great! I can't wait to see what kind of sub you and the Dr. come up with. Horn loaded no doubt.

That square hole you see in the ceiling is the manifold opening! Just kidding - that's the attic access. LOL.........

Thanks for the compliment. Dr. Who & I have been chatting and we've settled on amplification (Crown XTi 1000), but haven't gotten specific about driver(s) or enclosure. I'm not limited to size, but would prefer to not move the thing once in place. I've got this crazy idea of making the enclosure look like a refrigerator so it will "blend in" to the decor. Not sure I can pull it off though.

    Tom

  10. WOW Tom that looks awesome. Looks like you thought ahead and put tons of outlets in, that was smart. Are you parking cars in there too or just your scooter?

    Steve

Thanks Steve. Nope - no cars, just my motorcycle and my small woodworking tools for now. I've got a motorcycle lift from Harbor Freight coming and plan to maybe do a motorcycle restoration next year. Not sure what that will be, but I've got my eye on a couple of different British bikes (yeah - I'm a glutten for punishment).

I'd like to fertilize this guy I have: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=159362-46578-C10FR&lpage=none

So it will grow up to be something like this: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=159362-46578-C10FR&lpage=none

As for the outlets, it's kinda over-kill - especially the ones up top. Those came about after a conversation with the wife when she said that I needed outlets up high so when she buys me some cool neon signs, I'll have convenient outlets to plug into. Gotta love the way she thinks. Either that or she wants to make this place reeeeeeal comfortable so I'll stay outta her hair! [:$]

  11. This last shot is of the flooring we decided to put down. It came from Home Depot and is a floating floor designed for garages. It's pretty tough, cleans easily and is resistant to a lot of chemicals. I looked at all sorts of floor coating/coverings and this was the best compromise for my needs. It installed very easily. 480 square feet went down in about 6 hours with the wife's assistance.

  12. This is a shot of the left side. And a huge thanks goes out to my wife for doing the checkered flag border. The other thing you can't see are the provisions on the back wall for the 37" flat screen TV that my wife secretly bought for me. FWIW, 45' of premium HDMI cable and audio cable came from Blue Jeans cable. I know they're not as cheap as Monoprice, but I've had great service from Blue Jeans.

  13. Well....at a little over a year to complete, my garage/workshop/man-cave project is finally done. It's no where near the size of Michael Colter's, wasn't done in a few months like his and it dang sure aint' got no where near the number of Klipsch speakers his does (I got just one pair of Heresy's). However, one of my first projects - with the help of Dr. Who - will be a DIY sub that will be used for rockin' & rollin' and to hopefully drive all the bugs & roaches crazy.

This first shot is the right side with just a few cabinets in place. The cabinet to the far right that you can barely see houses my A/V equipment.

  14. Something I haven't had in a while 'cause it's been a while since I was seriously happy-faced, is truly what I would call a concoction.....

Place contents of one or two cans of sardines (I prefer the ones in oil) on a plate and top with the following:

    - Garlic powder (however much you want)

    - Finely chopped onions

    - Hot sauce (I prefer Melinda's XXXX reserve)

Personally I eat this with crackers and then chew one Pepcid AC for preventive measures.

    BURP!!!!

  15. Best bachelor midnight meal ever created:

    1 can Hypower Hot Tamale's

1 can Armor star chili w/beans

    (snip)

spread cheese over concoction, lid and wait for cheese to melt. Better grab a plate now, won't take long (only because the dam.n pan is too hot to set on your lap while you watch old UFC videos.

once cheese is melted, dump pan onto plate, add taco sauce to taste, and enjoy......

P.S. make sure you blow the first few bites to avoid blisters on your tongue.......

Tomorrow morning, make sure the bathroom is availableEmbarrassed

That sounds kinda close to another quickie dish I make.

    - Heat up one can of Chili with beans

    - On a plate, place a handful or so of Fritos original corn chips (amount is up to you)

    - Pour heated up chili on top of Fritos

    - On top of chili put shredded cheese (your choice), shredded lettuce, jalapenos, salsa, sour creme

    EAT!!

  16. Interesting and powerful photos. It's also interesting what the "mood" is in that country - definitely get the feeling "they" want change to a more free society.

However - it makes little difference who wins their elections as it is the Supreme Religious Counsel that really runs the country.

    Tom

Yes but the Supreme Counsel is walking a fine line with the youth and women of Iran. This is evident in the freedoms the youth and women have now. They have to give them something to keep some support. The more the public loses confidence in President and Counsel their days are numbered. Or at least I hope. I hope they gain some ground or at least keep those in power worried.

    Agree 100%.

BTW - that Suzuki in photo 32 is one bad@ss motorcycle.

  17. Today was a lunch out day. I went with a friend from work to his BBQ restaurant that he just re-opened (was closed for a bit while he and his Ex fought it out. Long story, but he screwed her BIG TIME. I just love it when a no-good, lying, cheating, swindling, you-know-what woman (and that's only what I know to be true about her) gets her @ss handed to her). Anyhow........

I had a pulled pork sammich w/o BBQ sauce (I'm a BBQ meat purist) and a side of Brunswick stew and my wife's potato salad (he uses her recipe). Naturally it was chased down by some sweet-tea.

    BURP!

    Sorry.

    Tom

  18. Kinda depends on the situation for me....

Last weekend I went to a race with some friends who race dirt track motorcycles. Typically, the racing ain't over until midnight, so by the time we load the bikes and all the pit gear back into the trailer it can be 1:00am or later. Last weekend it was almost 2:00am before we headed back. For this scenario there is but only one choice - good 'ol Waffle House. Bacon/cheese omlette with hash browns scattered/smothered/covered. Ahhhh yes, can feel my cholesterol rise as we speak.

If I'm at home and can't sleep, it's the trusty stand-by of some sort of chocolate and milk in a frozen glass.

If I've come home from a night of celebrating, a pie tin of Tostitos (round chips) covered with grated cheese & jalapenos then placed under the broiler will kill the appetite.

    Tom

  19. Goop packet, eh?? Hmmmm.......

All I've ever used was plain popping corn and popping corn oil. Once the stuff is popped, I sprinkle it lightly with butter flavored salt. I then have some unsalted butter melted for those who want to clog their arteries.

Of which I'm usually first in line. [:o]

    Tom

  20. Maybe this guy should just hire the lawyer that represented NFL player Donte Stallworth. For those that have not followed the story, this is the player that was DUI and killed a pedestrian. He was given 30 days in jail, which is really 24 with time served, 1000 hours community service, and 10 YEARS probation.

I guess at first glance the 30 days really sticks out. Upon further reasoning, the 10 years of probation is probably what will get this character in trouble. People rarely think of the ramifications of these "plea" deals because their whole purpose is to avoid jail time. Most likely with the probation will come drug testing in some form. These are generally set up to get the "perp" to violate the terms of probation and generate cash flow for the city. I think this is where he will see more jail time, on a probation violation. Think good and long before agreeing to a "plea".

Played hookie one day and went to see the wife while she was in court. A young man (defendant) steps up and the state presents their case of drug possession and intent to distribute. The defendant pleads guilty to a lesser charge (plea deal by state due to defendant having no priors). The judge asks the young man if he knew about or had been offered first offender.......

Here in Georgia, first offender basically means that if you stay clean (i.e. don't get caught doing ANYTHING wrong) for 5 years there will be no felony record and you do no jail time. That's the upside. The downside is that the police have the right to search/stop you at any time, day or night, without any warning during that 5 year period. Plus the usual check in requirements with your probabtion officer. Any violations during the 5 year period means that you automatically go to jail at the maximum sentence prescibed by law for the offense with no allowance for time already served on probabtion.

Defendant: "Yes yer Honor, I know about first offender and yes sir, they (the state) offered it to me."

Judge: "So would you like to accept it?"

    Defendant: "No sir."

Judge: "No? Really?? May I ask why?"

Defendant: "Well yer honor, anybody can get into trouble in 5 years. I mean, it's hard sometimes to not do something stupid. I bet everyone here in this courtroom, no offense yer Honor, probably does something wrong at least once a year and I ain't much different except I'm more apt to get caught."

Judge: "Well, at least he's honest."

  21. Testing Amy's limits, huh Thebes??????

    (snip)

How about those mini-movie theater machines. They any good?

Hey, this could become a gear thread after all.

A couple of Christmas's ago my parents gave the wife & I one of these: http://www.epopcorn.com/mo4ozpomaw.html

Honestly, I thought the thing was just gonna wind up being some cute novelty thing that would sit in the corner and just be another item on the dusting routine. Man - was I ever wrong. Although the basic enclosure isn't commercial, heavy-duty quality, it does it's job. The cooking pot however is very good at getting HOT and the drive motor & stuff do what they need to get the job done. It took a few tries to learn how it wants to cook, but once you get the hang of it, you can flat crank out the popcorn. LOL..... And the reaction from small kids when it gets to popping and the popcorn starts coming out the kettle is funny to watch. They jump up & down as much as the popcorn does!
