  1. I picked up two RF-82's and an RC-62 center for $1175 US. You can't go wrong with that combo - I promise you. My advice is shop around and getting the biggest and baddest for the budget.
  2. Thanks for the link. I read the info, but I can't understand why I wouldn't want my RF-82's set as large, handling some of the bass. I've read elsewhere that this allows the sub to handle the ultra-low frequencies primarily, and increases the bass effect. Even the auto calibration set the RF-82's to "large."
  3. I don't have the trained ear necessary to detect subtle timbre differences between speakers. For example, I have a secondary theater room above the garage, with two 1985 Pioneer floorstanding speakers and a 2 year old cheap Pioneer center channel, and to me, it sounds terrific. From my research, the RC-7 and RS-7's are similar in construction to the new reference line, and I can't imagine there being any detectable matching problems. Of course, the best possible scenario is just to do an audition. That said, how much money would you be saving on an RC-7 over an RC-52/62? And how much are you saving on your surrounds verses the RS-42/52's? If you can't go with the RF-7's, then I would try to buy the new reference line, to make sure there are no matching problems whatsoever.
  4. muchas gracias. I'll leave the RC-62 set to "small." Now, which crossover setting would you guys advise I use? 50, 80, 100, 150, or 200? It would be really nice if the receiver allowed you to make individual setting on each channel, instead of the same setting for all "small" speakers. I can't wait to pick up my RS-52's.
  5. I'll preface everything with the fact that I know very little about home theater audio. I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV, 110 watts/channel, with two RF-82 fronts, the RC-62 center, a JBL 150 watt 10" sub, with POS, small surrounds and backs. Like most receivers, mine has the option to set the speakers as small or large, which tells the receiver which channels to apply your crossover setting to, so you don't get puny bookshelf speakers trying to produce a lot of bass. My auto calibration set the RF-82's as "large," as it should, and set the RC-62 as "small." The crossover settings are 50, 80, 100, 150, and 200. Could I safely set the RC-62 as "large"? Would it have an effect on the clarity of the dialogue through the center?
  6. Here is a link to the Omnimount shelf. They advise nothing over 30 lbs, but the 32 lb RC-62 feels very solid. Thanks again for all of your advice. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/OmniMount-Center-Channel-Speaker-Shelf-CCH1B-/sem/rpsm/oid/108951/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do I bought mine at Ultimate Electronics for $34.99. It comes in black and plainum, like mine. There are several reviews of it on Circuit City's website. I found out about it at avsforum.com, where they typically have a thread dedicated to your TV, so you can ask specific questions regarding other's setups.
  7. Picked up my two RF-82's and an RC-62, hooked them up to my Pio Elite VSX-81TXV, and I'm hearing things in previously viewed movies that I simply couldn't hear before. My 3 year old daughter has, at least 20 times, gotten out of her seat while one of her Disney movies is playing, walked up to the RF-82's, and stuck her ear up to them and listened. Then, she'll tell me, Dadda, to go to the other speaker and listen. Even my 3 year old is amazed! I can't wait to add 4 RS-52's when the budget allows. Thanks to all of you for helping me with my decison in picking these speakers, this is a great forum. Here are a few pics of the setup ... My Omnimount Center Channel Speaker Shelf, supporting the RC-62 ... Now, how far apart should I space my RS-52's (when I get them) along the back wall in this photo? For perspective, you can make out one of the RF-82's and the edge of my TV in the bottom right of the picture. You can also see my very cheap Pioneer surround speakers, mounted approximately 10' off the floor. (those will be replaced by RS-52's as well)
  8. Ok, I just measured my surrounds heighth at 10', a little better than 12'. No, they are not mounted on the ceiling. How does the discontinued RS-35 compare to the RS-52? Will it be that much of a drop off? And, when mounting whichever surrounds I get, wouldn't you guys agree that I should angle them down?
  9. I'm buying two RF-82's for my mains, an RC-62 Center, and possibly some surrounds. I can get the RS-42's for $180 each, the RS-52's for $300 each, or the RS-35's for $175 each. I use a Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV (110 w/channel - 7.1) in a 20'x18' room with 18' tall cathedral ceiling. Because of my open floor plan, the surrounds and rears are wired 12' from the floor. Obviously, I like spending the least amount of money, but I want the most bang for the buck. Thanks in advance.
  10. I'm about to pick up the RF-82's and the RC-62, and maybe the RS-52's. I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV, 110 watts/channel, HDMI upconversion v1.2 (supports 1080p), handles high definition audio over HDMI. I can let you know how it sounds very soon. This receiver cost me $750.00, and has been perfect thus far. It was the least expensive for the options I needed when I bought it about a month and a half ago.
  11. Yeah, I was thinking of waiting all the way to Valentines day to pick up some surrounds, and then add the rears sometime later. I have a 20'x18' living room with cathedral ceilings, peaking at 18'. Because of the open floor plan, my surrounds and rears are mounted 12' off the floor. So, my surrounds and rears need to have some umph. Which surrounds and rears would you guys reccomend?
  12. I am going to make my purchase from Best Buy/Magnolia Home Theater. The Magnolia Home Theater is located in some of the larger Best Buys, and carries higher end components and speakers than the typical Best Buy. NEVER buy from Best Buy online. A common misconception is that you simply have to pay sticker price at Best Buy, but I have paid less than sticker on my TV, receiver, and other speakers I have purchased in the past. Find a few prices on the internet, do a lot of research, and then go talk to a salesman at Best Buy/Magnolia. Tell them you know they can't match the online prices, but they sure could work with you to encourage a purchase in the store, because you realize the value of just being able to bring them back if there is a problem. They will work with you on the price.
  13. Thank you very much for your response. I'm very excited to pick these up. My Pioneer puts out 110 watts/channel, and I can't wait to see how it sounds. Originally, I was going to get the RC-52 Center channel, for two reasons. 1) My Sony LCD has no room on top for a Center, and I'm going to purchase the Omnimount Center Channel Speaker Shelf, which has a maximum weight allowance of 30 lbs. (I have no room to place the center under the tv), and 2) Best Buy/Magnolia Theater for some reason does not carry either the RC-62 or RC-64. After posting a little on the Avsforum, and talking to some audiophile salesmen, they encouraged me to stay away from a RF-82/RC-52 combo. So, I'll likely pick up my RC-62 elsewhere. For anyone else with a DLP or LCD tv with no room to stick a center channel on top, you ought consider the omnimount shelf I mentioned - it has received good reviews over at avsforum, at least for my tv. Eventually, I want my surrounds and rears to be the Klipsch reference line, but that will have to wait.
  14. I'm upgrading the HT, so my new Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV will have something respectable to push. Right now, I have a bookshelf system that blows (old home theater in a box system speakers), so I'm considering picking up the RF-82's as my fronts, with the RC-62 Center. I read that close to 90% of your sound comes from the front 3 speakers, so 90% of my investment should likewise go there. Do any of you guys have this setup? How does it sound? Are the 82's overkill? I am listening to a lot more music, since the 360 will stream my mp3 collection, so the 82's are not just for home theater. However, home theater will be their primary function. Thanks in advance.
