  1. You won't get anything as good new in that price range.  Buy used.

Can you go a little higher?  $1,000 - $1,500 will get you something really nice.  You won't regret the extra expenditure down the road.

What do you recomend in this price range?

Just to be clear, please specify new or used.

    Thanks,

    Stephen
  2. I just ordered the upgraded crossover and also the tweeter upgrade.

What can I say, I only want to do this once.

So far, hooked up to the Mc, the sound good.  Not great.  I am hoping the new Xovers will be a big help.

I am going to need some help with room placement I think.  I had my old speakers really dialed in on placement.  I am not sure what to do with these huge boxes... suggestions??
  3. Stopped in at my long time dealer to listen to some new setups and look and see what kind of used equipment was in. After looking at some old HK tube gear with those MIA 7355's and a few old fisher pieces we decided to move into the high end room.

    Equipment:

    McIntosh MC402  400wpc SS     - $5,900

    McIntosh C45     SS                   - $3,599

    Phillips SACD 1000                    - $2,000

    B & W 802D                              - $12,000

Room is fairly large not sure of exact dimensions and has bass traps as well as other sound reinforcements.

Spent about 2 hours listening. We listened to Dire Straits, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, and of course some Floyd.

We we pushing about 50watts. Jammin along pretty good. If that would of been the same 50watts on my Chorus II's we would of been having a block party.

The sound was descent but got to say there is noway I would spend that kind of money for that. For some folks I imagine its the cats meow but wow do I appreciate what I have managed to put together at home. I've got about $6,000 worth of equipment when new that I listen to on a daily basis vs $24,000 worth we were listening to there. My combo is richer, more pleasing to the ears and much more dynamic. Don't misunderstand, I am not saying it sounded like a $500 combo set but gosh for $24,000 compared to what I have invested geesh something doesnt add up. Maybe if it was sitting in the same spot my system is it would be a different story. I just find it amazing how folks walk in and say yeah that sounds great and drop the cash. Are they buying sound or the names? It sure is a long road we travel to get to a point we feel comfortable and somewhat satisfied. Just my 2cents on a couple hours of hanging out.

    Interesting thread...

I would be very interested to kmow what your home set up consists of.

I just tonight bought a set of CW's and I am going to drive them with SS Mc gear...
  4. Ok, as some of you may know I have been searching high and low for a pair of CW on the west coast.  I found a pair today, I picked up a pair of one owner 1978 ( I think, "S" serial #)  RB CW's that have had one coat of medium stain.

I paid $700.00, which was a lot more than I wanted to pay, but they were 5 minutes away, and I wanted a pair...

I have then hooked up and they sound great...  but being the anal person that I am, I want new crossovers, refinished cabs etc.

    Please advise.

The grills are close to perfect, so that, at least is not an issue.  I do want these to sound the very best that they can.

I will be driving them with a McIntosh SS amp.

I really appreciate all of you on this forum and look forward to your advice.

I saw a thread not too long ago about a guy doing a beautiful refinishing job, if someone can point to be that thread that would be great.

    Thanks, Two Dot
  5. I have a 6200 and Heresies that I bought 25 years ago...

Even though I have not had a chance to use them together, I think it would be a wonderful combo.

The McIntosh has brought music into my world more beautiful than I had ever imagined.

Even though I recently upgraded to a MA 6300, I would not hesitate to say that the 6200 is one of the sweetest amplifiers I have had ever had the pleasure of listening to.
  6. I am right there with you guys.  My old vinyl rig is put away on the east coast and I am out on the west working.

Finally found a nice old Linn (thanks Allan) and started spinning agin.

Brought back about 20 LP's, been buying a few used ones locally and been burnin' up the web ordering some new stuff.

Great fun, just like the old days!!!

I almost forgot how much I loved that vinyl sound, almost.
