  1. I thought I should post a couple of pic of my latest finds.

Early in the summer I picked up a Scott 299D on FleaBay, probably paid more than it was worth, but it is almost mint cosmetically and was all original.

Sent it into Craig to work his magic, got it back several weeks ago and have really been enjoying the sound.

The Scott is sounding VERY nice, Craig did a great job with the rebuild.

Thanks Craig I cannot say enough about your service and expertise!

This past Monday I noticed an ad for a HK 630 receiver on Canuck Audio Mart (the Canadian AGon) for $55.

The seller said it worked, but has some intermittent problems when adjusting the controls

I am actually listing to the HK right now playing my new favorite band "Son Volt".

The HK 630 is, I think, from 1972.

It has a nice full sound, leaning on the warm side, with no harshness that my ear seems to pick up

with most solid state stuff now.

The tuner section seems to work pretty good as well, I just hope I can clean up the controls easily enough.

Maybe not the be all, end all... but this vintage stuff is not bad, at all!

  2. Hey MojoX,

My KHorns are in a 20' x 15' x 7.5' room and I am very happy with the sound.

I originally had the speakers on the short wall but switched them to the long wall and was blown away by how much better the 2 channel sound became.

See the thread I had going as I did the change over:

    http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/111977.aspx?PageIndex=1

As for neigbours, I am not much help as my system is in the basement of a detatched house.

  3. Congrats on the rebuild picky,

Your post is making me even more anxious to send my, new to me, 299D into the Doctor for it's mid August appointment.
I am sure Craig will work his regular magic on the Scott as well as transplant a big smile onto my face.

I was thinking of the same road trip to pick my amp up after the operation, mind you I am looking at a
few extra hours in the car.
Toronto is about 4 hours to Sarnia/Port Huron, how much further to Craig's new place after crossing over at Port Huron?
The scenery alone look's like it would be worth the drive.

  4. Hey jwc,

From seeing your gear in the past, I would guess Dan's work must be pretty good if it found it's way into your set-up.

The MC1201s look very nice all doll'd up it their sports jackets.

Thanks Tarheel, I am really looking forward to seeing the 299 in person when I pick it up on Saturday.

I hope it sounds as good as it looks.

I went ahead and ordered a cabinet from Dan today, in Black American Wallnut.

Delivery will be about 4 weeks.

    Should look something like this:

  5. Hey fender... tblake,

So far the Welborne DRD45 + Peach II have been the best I have heard driving my KHorns and now after downsizing those

pieces out of the system I wanted to try the vintage thing while trying to keep the budget in check.

Yesterday I won an Ebay auction for, what looks like a very nice condition 299D:

    Item number: 130315254374

I may have paid a little over the going rate, but it seemed in great condition and it is in driving distance (3.5 hr) to pick-up.

Today I auditioned the 2325 that I had my eye on:

    http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/133287-marantz_2325_receiver_in_excellent_condition_with_wood_case/

It is also in very good conditon as the ad describes and I brought my Heresys along to try to get a feel for how the Marantz sounds on Klipsch.

The Heresys sounded good with the 2325 but I agree with you fender, in that the sound may translate differently on the Klipschorns.

    tblake10,

Your thoughts echo what I was guessing so I think that I will wait on the Marantz until I pick up the 299 (probably this Saturday) and listen

    to it through the KHorns.

  6. Hey Guys,

I am considering these two (different) units to drive my Klipschorns and would like to hear from anyone
who has had a chance to compare the vintage Marantz and Scott sounds.

I have a line on both of these and depending on the final selling prices, it would be a bit of a stretch
to buy both, do some comparing, and then find a buyer for the 2nd place finisher.

So far the KHorns (my ears) have preferred the tubes that I have tried:
Quicksilver Mid Monos, Jolida 300B, Welborne DRD45s
    vs the SS amps:
First Watt F3 (clone), and my Denon AVR.

It was a couple of years ago that I auditioned tuned4life's Cornwals and was impressed enough with
the way they sounded on Doug's 2325 that I bought the Corns.
To me Neil Young never sounded so good...
then again it was my 1st serious listen to Klipsch speakers.

  7. winchester,

Without doing anymore research and if I had to buy a higher powered tube amp right today, it would be a
toss up between a pair of Craig's VRDs and the MC-275.
But I don't have a spare 2Gr right now and I promised myself I would wait until the CND/USD exchange rate
got a little closer to par, like last summer.

Before the Welbornes, I was using a Jolida 300B at 8-9 wpc and that amp could rock pretty good but it had a bit
of noise, hum at idle that bothered me.
When I had my Cornwalls I used a pair of Quicksilver Mid Monos that were very nice but I think I would prefer trying
an amp with the KT88, vs the EL34s in the Quickies.

My buddy is using a HK Citation II (60 wpc KT88 from the 1960's) on his Altec Model 19s, I have been meaning
to talk him into bringing it up to my place and try it on the KHorns.
His Citation II sounds much nicer on his 19s than his HK Citation 12 (60 wpc SS from the 1970's) even with it in
need of a bit of a rebuild... of which he has bought a parts kit and tubes from Jim McShane.

  8. Hey winchester,

Please give us an update after your Peach arrives, I would be very interested to get your impressions with the Peach in front of your MC2105.

You are approaching your system in the opposite direction as I am, but I am guessing we may end up at the same spot.

I have been running my KHorns with a pair of Welborne DRD45s, Peach II, JD-100, and am VERY satisfied with the sound.

The 1.8 wpc are more than enough when I am sitting in the sweet spot, but like you, when I am elsewhere in the house I would like to be

able to ask for a few more db.

I was thinking, when I can swing it financially, of adding a SS amp to look after those occasions.

Maybe an older Mac (2155, 2125, 7150, etc) or Classe (DR-9, Fifteen, CA-100, CA-150, etc).

After reading your last statement, maybe a higher powered valve amp would be the way to go?

  9. Hey Pete,

    "Bryston 4B . . Problem identified."

I am not a Bryston hater, but the 4B is where I would 1st point my finger.

My last non klipsch system consisted of:

    Musical Fidelity CDP...
    Modwight Pre...
    Bryston 14B...
    PMC OB1 speakers.

It took me a while and $$$ to dial that rig into what turned out to be a very nice sounding system.
Some NOS tubes for the SWL 9.0, Cardas Golden Ref ICs, Black Sands PCs.
It wasn't until I logged several 100 hours on the Mod Preamp that the system sounded very good.

Initially I was bothered by a lot of sibilance, but once the caps in Dan's great preamp had time
to properly burn in it was all good.

Bryston makes some great amps, but not for everybody's system and / or ear.

  10. Pete,

Your thread title very accurately describes a good friend of mine.
A year or so ago he took the plunge back into vinyl after a 10 year hiatus from having a turntable.

He got (what I think is) a pretty good table, a VPI Scout, can't remember the cartridge.

    The rest of his system:
    Classe CDP...
    Copland 301 tube pre...
    Bryston 4B...
KEF 107s... these were originally my speaker that I sold to him a number of years ago.

This is a fairly decent system, but, to my ears I can not take listening to it for any length of time.
I am not sure what is cause, but it very fatiguing to me.

My friend has let to get up and listen to my system, I am very interested to get his impressions compared to
    how he hears his system.

As per your title, my friend will always points out to anyone and everyone how vinyl sounds so much better
    than any digital playback.
I have heard some outstanding vinyl playback... but just because there is a TT in his system does not
    automatically mean superior sound...

as my snobby friend believes. [^o)]

  11. Hi Paul, welcome to the forum.

Ovation Audio, is where I originally saw the Audio Space gear... Mike is a great guy to deal with.

I ended up going with a Jolida JD-300B (9 wpc, SET, integrated) and have since changed to a pair of Welborne DRD 45s with

a Juicy Music Peach II pre.

The Novas look like very nice amps, is there a discernible difference in the sound when you switch between triode and ultralinear?

    Timmikid, Mallette...
With this thread being over a year old, it is with much sadness as I re-read the string of posts.
    OB, gone but not forgotten.
