  1. Hey Marvel, I breifly tried a Fisher 500C and at 32 wpc it would blow you out of the room at anything over 3-4 on the volume dial. Just to get by, I am currently using my Denon AV receiver and at 90 wpc it sounds so BLAH and lifeless. I was/am not expecting too much from the Denon but it is an interesting comparison.
  2. Hey Jay, Thanks for the feedback. I just did a search on your amp... very nice indeed. I am still having a hard time getting my head around idea of single digit watts, but real world input like yours is very reasuring. Thanks
  3. I had been considering a Audio Space integrated for the Khorns and when googling 300B amps I came across a JD-300B for sale at a very attractive price. The 1st question, will nine 300B watts be enough to drive the Khorns in a large room... 15' x 24', open to another 11' x 22' room? 2nd, have the Jolida guys been happy with their gear for reliability, sonics, and value?
  4. Hey guys, Just to add another log on the fire... I know Jolida is a little more popular than Audio Space. How would a Jolida JD-300B work with the KHorns? I think I might start a new thread on the JD-300B.
  5. Hey OB, I just saw a new listing on AGon for a pair of Corns in NASHUA, NH for $750. http://buy.audiogon.com/cgia/cls.pl?spkrfull&1204836153
  6. Hi Leo, I do agree that it is better to buy American or Canadian when possible, especially, politically speaking. Quality wise, I think there are cases of some real crap coming from China, but more and more there are some nice products being manufactured in China. There are a lot of well respected companies getting some of their stuff made in China. Denon, Quad, Cambridge, etc, and if what I just read in another thread is true, even Klipsch. http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/99238.aspx "Mr. Dee, i can even post a pic showing "made in china" written on the back of RF 82's!" If money was not an issue, I might go for something from: http://www.wyetechlabs.com/index.html Like an Opal Line Stage Preamplifier and a Topaz 211C stereo amplifier. I am hoping some of the guys have had a closer look at the Audio Space stuff and see if it jives with what my dealer was saying.
  7. Hey OB, Yes, I sold them to help finance the KHorns that I bought from Claude: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/97057.aspx I would have loved to have been able to keep them along with the corner-horns but I just couldn't swing it. They went to a loving home a few hours north of you, in the Kingston, ON area. Good luck with your search, hopefully you will find a pair that are as nice as Doug's pair. Tom
  8. Hey DD, The link that Bill posted shows the list prices and with the current US/Canadian dollars, these are very close to the prices up here in the Toronto area. I think the price I got quoted for the 3i (EL34: 16W (triode), 32W (ultralinear), EL34, without remote) was $1200 plus tax.
  9. Yes Bill, very well priced and they look very nice when I saw them in person. I did not listen to any of them, this dealer has nothing remotely close to a horn / Klipsch speaker. The website refreshed my memory on names, the models the dealer suggested were: 1) Gallaxy 300: 21wpc, 300B, with remote. 2) Gallaxy 34: 16W (triode), 32W (ultralinear), EL34, with remote. 3) 300B MKII: 10wpc, 300B SET, no remote. 4) 3i: 16W (triode), 32W (ultralinear), EL34, without remote.
  10. I stopped by a local shop yesterday looking for a tube integrated to go with my "new to me" 1975 Klipschorns. For tubes they sell Mac, VTL, Shanling, and Audio Space. For price/performance the owner suggested Audio Space and pointed me to the either the EL34 model or the 300B model. Sorry, forgot the model names already. From what I understand Audio Space is one of the older Chinese HiFi companies and maybe a cut above some of the others? I would love to hear from anybody that has used or had a listen to these amps. Thanks
  11. Hey Mark, "If you have to go SS, these amps are as good as it gets" Well, that means a ton, coming from a tube guy like yourself! A year or so ago when I bought the Mod preamp, it was basically a coin toss over which to buy... your Peach or Dan's 9.0. Ultimately it came down to the remote control, but I see you are now offering the Peach with a RC option. Can suggest which First Watt might be best suited to the Khorn as well as which would work best with the Peach. Thanks
  12. Hey Tom, I am basically slowly starting from scratch after recently selling my previous system (84 Corns, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre24, Ouicksilver Mid Monos) and buying the 1975 Khorns. I just took delivery of a Fisher 500C that I bought on Ebay but it got sent back to the seller after finding a broken tuner wheel. My plan was to go with a vintage receiver but I am not sure if I want to deal with the thought of sourcing parts and service for such an animal. With that said, the Fisher did make the Khorns sing, nice and full sound, very easy to listen too. My next thought was to go with a more modern set up, a tube pre and SS amp. I have used this combination in the past, Modwright SWL 9.0 with tube rectifier and a Bryston 14B with great results on PMC OB1s. Initially I was also thinking, JM Peach or maybe another Modwright. Thanks for the links.
  13. Hey guys, Has anybody tried or listened to any of the First Watt amps with a Heritage speaker? I know that the F1 and F2 are designed to work with single driver speakers with no xovers but I am wondering how the F3, F4, or Aleph J might work with my Khorns. I just read a review on the F3 and it compared very favourably to the reviewer's SET amp but with a better bottom end and obviously no tube maintenance.
  14. Michael, You are killing me! I feel privileged to have owned 1 pair of mint Cornwalls, then sold them for a pretty nice pair of KHorns... When I see shots of some of your collection... now I feel inadequate. I want to meet you in person, and listen to every pair of speakers you own. It may take a little while, but I am willing to supply the Stella, Harp, Guinness, Moosehead (for me, eh), and maybe even some Sam Adams to have the good fortune to listen to your collection. I may even bring some good Canadian whiskey with me! Cheers, Tom
  15. Hey Groomlakearea51, The TubeDepot has a ton of tubes listed, makes it even more confusing for a tube newbie like myself. A lot of the tube reviews that I have looked at usually talk about guitar amp applications, how should I relate that to HiFi amplifiers? Last year I bought some tubes from Brendan at Tube World for my now sold Modwright preamp. That made a huge improvement on the sound. I will give both Tube World and Tube Depot an email and see what they have to say.
  16. Hey Guys, Now that I have had a month or so to listen to the Mid Monos driving my Cornwalls I am wondering what might be the next step... maybe upgrading the OEM tubes? The Mids came with: 1- 6922: Sovtek 1 - 12AX7: no name, Made in China 2 - EL34: Tesla One of the EL34s was a little wonky, it snapped and crackled during start up so I picked up a quad of Winged "C" SED from The Tube Store for $90 to get me by. Is NOS tubes the way to go? From what I have seen some of those can get pretty pricey, I may have to go 3 steps at a time... 6922s, then 12AX7s, and then EL34s? My musical tastes are fairly wide, rock, country, folk, starting to get into jazz, no classical. Here is a handful of cds that are currently sitting out: White Strips, Richard Thompson, Van Morrison, Mary Gauthier, Allison Kraus, Dave Alvin, Keb Mo, Holly Cole, John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Springsteen, AC/DC, Stones, Blue Rodeo, Roy Hargrove... no particular order. I would rather spend my time listening than rolling, so I would like rely on your opinions as too what you guys think might be best suited for me and my amps. Ultimately, I would like to bring out the best these amps have to offer. Thanks
  17. This probably should have gone in the "right this minute" thread as I am half way through the first listen to the new S. E. disc. I have always been a huge Steve Earle fan, his live shows have always ROCKED but his song writing is what makes him truely great. I am really liking this recording, it is ... awsome! Then again, the circles that Steve ran in (Townes, Guy, Rodney) he pretty much had to know how to lay a song down. And to top it off, it sounds pretty fine on the Cornwalls.
  18. Hey nu2toobs, That is a very kind offer but It was my fault for not jumping on them right away. I delayed a bit because I was trying to decide if my Cornwalls would be better of with the 25 watts of the Horns or the 50 watts of the Mids. The Horns probably would have been good with the Corns, but now with the Mids I am sure I will not have any concerns with power. The Mids may not be as quite as the Horns but hopefully that will not be an issue. The Horns should be even better suited to your La Scalas, let us know how the combo works out. Congrads on the new amps, when do you expect them to arrive? Tom
  19. Well, It looks like I will be answering my own question about this time next week. I called up Mike at QS on Tuesday to say yes I will take the returned pair of Horn Monos that we had talked about the day before but much to my dismay he said they just got sold. Ah $#!T, now what to do as I had convinced myself that the Horns would be just the ticket for the Cornwalls. Mike says, I still have the returned pair of Mid Monos here and I can look after the shipping for you. I said OK, it is still a little more than I was budgeting for, lets do it. So by next Tues. or Wed. I should have pair of Mid Monos with chrome chassis hooked up the the Klipsch. This is exciting stuff... it will be hard to wait. []
  20. Hi Jack, I have looked at the Fat-Man version before and have been thinking that would be a great unit for my daughter. The kids are all about the Ipod and I thought something like what you just got would be a great intro into a higher fidelity set -up. Ya, I understand the relationship between doubling the power to get 3db more output from a speaker but I am still having trouble convincing myself that 25 watts will be enough. I spoke to Mike at QS today and he actually has a couple of sets of used amps at he factory, a set of Horn Monos and a set of Mid Monos. Both are basically brand new models that have been returned for very slight cosmetic flaws, hence Mike is offering them to me at reasonably attractive pricing. Mike thinks the Horns will most likely do the trick for the Cornwalls but I am still wondering if I should pay the extra for the 50 watts in the Mid Monos. I will sleep on it tonight and give Mike a call tomorrow morning to put my order in... which ones to get?
  21. Thanks Tarheel, I think that might be my plan, if I can be patient. The old Yamaha receiver that I am using right now (just to make something come out of the Cornwalls) sucks. If you or anybody sees a pair before I do, give me a nudge and let me know. Thanks
  22. Hey Guys, Thanks for all the feedback so far. I sent off an email to Quicksilver asking what they thought about the Mid Monos matching up with my new Cornwalls. Mike actually got back to me very quickly and he said that the Mid's would work fine, but in his opinion, he thought that the Horn Mono Amplifier 25 watts, $1695/pair would be the best match. He also thought that 25 watts should enough to drive the Corns. After reading the discription on the Horn Mono I see where Mike is coming from in regards to that amp and hi efficient loudspeakers. At $1695, they are a little out of my budget for brand new ones, so it is either take a chance on those Mini Monos or wait for a pair of Horns to come up on Agon. I wonder how often the Horn Monos might surface in the used market?
  23. For now, I have the Cornwalls in my living room on the short wall about 3.5 feet out from the deepest part of the bay window that is the end wall. As the room is only 12' wide and about 18' deep the speakers are about 6-7 feet apart and only 10" from the side walls. The listening position would be about 8 feet from the speakers. Our house is an open concept split level so this living room is pretty much open to the rest of the lower level... dining room, kitchen, and then down about 5 steps to the family room. I listen at medium levels usually (the wife may have a different opinion) and once in a blue mood at live venue levels. Mostly rock, folk, blues, country, a little jazz, no classical or pop/top 40. Just coming from my 87db PMC's with a 500 watt Bryston, I am still trying to get my head around the idea of just a handful of watts. []
  24. Hey Dean, I will be using my Musical Fidelity, CD-Pre24... it is a preamp/dac/cd player, all in one box. See link for example : http://www.musicalfidelity.com/products/archived/cdpre24.html
