  1. I did find the matching round treminal cups and add those with the new binding post. I also ended up going with a all black front by taking the cloth off the grill frames. This is about as wife friendly a setup as I could come up with. Not a typical look...that's for sure, but I do like it!
  2. Well considering the beautiful craftsmanship of crossovers built by the likes of Bob, Al and Dean ... even if it is sonically questionable to have a external crossover ... at least you get to see what you paid for! There is obviously no harm in having them outside the speaker and maybe it would have some beneficial effect. I would be great if someone with the proper test equipment could try to test for any measurable difference. I suppose a suitable way to run the crossover output wiring back into the cabinet is the next thing to consider .. that should not be to hard though.
  3. Damm ...I didn't think there was going to be a math test today! What does it all mean...It seem like speaker maufactures (at least high-end one's) would have been using outboard crossovers long ago. I'm still confused/skeptical..or something !!!
  4. makes sense...thanks McD. By the way I find ceramic coffee cups (red one's only...of course) work much better than the foam one's for speaker cable supports. The noise floor of my system is now so low that it sounds like it's in the basement !!
  5. I do not use Foobar to organize music, I have always done it on my own. I have a separate hard drive that I store my music on but that's mainly because I have a lot to store. I think of mine system like it is a file cabinet. My setup is this. I have made folders labeled Music, A - G...Music, H - Q and Music, R - Z. In each folder is artists that match those alphabetcally, and as stated above, in each artist folder are the various Cd's by that artist. I also have a group of "Various" folders in the R - Z folder (Various, Jazz ... Various, Blues...etc) that I put artist that I don't want a whole folder for. For the main folders (A _- G ...H - Q ...R - Z) I have made shortcuts and placed them on my desktop for easy access. It seems like a lot of folders but it's logical and works for me. If I want to listen to The Beatles, Abbey Road. I open the Music, R - Z folder...go to The Beatles folder and open that and then open the Abby Road folder/Cd and hit "play all" or pick a song that I want and then play that. I have set Foobar as my "defaut player" in Windows so when I hit "play all" Foobar open and play's the music. I would think you could still do the six major groups that you do now as that's what your use to. There's no right or wrong way to do this, what works for you is all that matters.
  6. I’ve been thinking… seems a lot of high end audio folks are concerned with isolating various components in the audio chain from the obvious one such as turntables and CD player right on through to the sub’s and speakers. Here’s one quote on the subject from the Galen Carol Audio Website…(there are many others along these lines) “In the same way vacuum tubes are sensitive to external vibration, so to I believe, solid state and passive components are too. Capacitors (in particular), resistors, transistors and the like are sensitive, at least to some degree, to the influence of vibration. More and more we are seeing designers take these concepts into consideration when designing a new product. Chassis damping, improved structural rigidity/integrity and individual component damping are now almost commonplace.” I’m not sure I buy into this, but some of it is common sense, such as for isolating turntables. So here’s my though. If there is an effect to electronics, sonically, from vibration, would it not make sense to have the crossover outside the speaker…not even attached? Just think of the vibration inside the speaker cabinet. How did they miss that!!! Food for though and hopefully discussion. EZ
  7. I use artist, title and date of release as the folder name, (Neil Young, Harvest 1972).... In the folder I have track number and title for all the songs, (02 - Harvest). If I have more than one CD/LP file for a artist, I put all of them in a folder named for the artist. There would be a Neil Young folder. Inside would be the various albums and inside those folders would be all the songs for that album. I hope this what you were looking for.
  8. I have my Herseys on low stand to accommodate my room layout. To make up for any loss of low end I added a Klipsch KSW 12 sub. They make a nice combo. Part of all this upgrading/updating I bought a crossover upgrade capacitor kit and titanium diaphragms for the tweeters from Bob Crites. I removed the crossover from the terminal cups and mounted it them on wood blocks, Bob C. style. I do need to upgrade the wood to something a litter prettier (I used a piece I had laying around). I cut some wood rounds to block off the terminal cups openings and I'm going to mount new binding posts, (like the ones in the pic), to them. They wiil stick out but will do until I can find some proper round cups. capacitors
  9. Before I found these cabnets it was my intention was to go for a piano type finsh but these have a industral/pro speckled finish over oak (I think) so I knew it would never be smooth without a total surface sanding. That was more work than I was willing to put into these. This is a close up of the finish
  10. Two things came together to help me conceive this project and ultimately get it done. First I ran across www.voltiaudio.com and began lusting after a re-veneer job on Hersey II. After I realized Greg’s work was way out of my budget I started thinking of a DYI job. One of the biggest obstacle (other than never veneering before!) was living without my speakers for a extended period of time. At the same time I’ve been taking some heat from my wife over those “big brown speakers” and how the do not match are blue and white decor. What to do? I had foolishly toyed with the idea of painting my Hersey’s white and be done with it but I knew there would be no turning back and veneering them would be a lost dream. Well perusing craigslist, just before Christmas, low and behold there was listed a pair of Hersey cabinets in black for $20!!! I quickly snatched them up. This was the perfect answer for me, paint these and save my originals for future improvement. The new ones where an odd 2 way version of Hersey’s that I have been told may have been used as surrounds in a movie theater. Luckily it was a easy task to remove the wood blocking the tweeter cut outs and with that done all my drivers fit perfectly. It took 5 coats of industrial latex enamel to cover them completely and give me a good hard finish. I know they may not be very many people’s cup of tea (I’m still getting use to the look myself) but it did allow me to kill two birds with one stone. All I need to do now is find some round Klipsch terminal cups to finish them off right.
  11. I haven't had a blown one in a long time, but I remember it had a kind of "raspy" sound. I don't think you can tell by looking at it because the damage is to the voice coil. You could check for lose connection or bad internal wire.Or maybe a bad/lose solder joint on the crossover.
  12. SORRY ABOUT THE SUFF ABOVE ... I CAN"T SEEM TO GET RID OF IT! I got these on craigslist for $20. They have a finish similar to my KP 350's, though the cabinets are not as heavy duty. Actually they seem lighter than my birch Hersey II's. The tweeter were factory blocked with the wood as shown (I removed the wood) so they must have been a 2 way system.
  13. I posted the same post twice...it was the only way I could find to remove one of them.
  14. Wanted...Klipsch Round Terminal Cup's ....to fit Heresy II. Anybody have a pair that they could part with?
  15. I have to sets of these in white...both in use. I have never tried to ceiling mount but I think you can flip the bracket to make it work. Depending on the angle you are looking for...it will be limited. I think you could un-screw the bracket if you look under the boot and maybe replace it with something like this. http://www.bracketsandstands.com/AM_30_UNIVERSAL_SPEAKER_WALL_MOUNT_Black_p/am30b.htm
  16. Has anybody tried to put a white finish on thier Klipsch speakers? I have a pair of Hersey II I've been thinking of refinishing and the wife would really like them white to match the decor. I'm leaning toward a white wash stain. Any thoughts? I would love to see some pics if somebody has (or has been crazy enough to) done this, Thanks EZ sorry about the stuff above...can't seem to get rid of it!
