  1. Thanks I defintely would have bought it from you but I just ordered the Onkyo A-9555, the deal was pretty good so I decided not to let it pass me by. It'll be here in a few days so I'll let you know how it sounds. What drew me to it was that it's digital like the Panasonic but has a big transformer. I don't see how you could get much bass without one.
  2. It's been my experience that the new vinyl is just vinyl CD, often worse sounding than CD. That's the way it is with the popular titles anyway, but the more underground stuff usually sounds good. For instance my Stephen Malkamus (ex-Pavement) record is the best recording I've ever heard. My Foo Fighters and Trail of Dead records are total garbage. I never spend more than $15 for a new record, but I suspect those Best Buy ones are just $20+ vinyl CD garbage.
  3. I've been reading a lot about these lately but don't know which to get. Panasonic SA-X25, Sony str-da5000es, and now I've just heard about the Onkyo a-9555 which is supposed to be better than the others. Sounds to me like great sound quality for the price but I haven't heard one yet. Sometimes there's negatives though like them being not musical, not enough power, harsh mids and highs with rock, etc. But more often people seem to be blown away by the clean, dynamic tube-like sound. One thing I'm concerned about is if they make bad recordings sound really bad. I hate that aspect in amps. Right now I'm using a cheap Yamaha Best Buy receiver that sounds decent, but at least I can listen to all my recordings.
  4. I've heard that come pro amps soundbetter than others. I haven't found any opinions on these. They're discontinued, so I don't know if that could be a bad sign.
  5. Has anyone tried a 4 channel pro amp in the home? I have a set of Heresys and KG4's I'd like to hook up to one. I don't know what brand/model sounds best either.
  6. I started to get interested in getting a pro amp like Crown or QSC because of the great watts-for-your-buck, then I thought why not do the same thing with speakers? Those pro amp speakers have massive horns on them and I'm sure they'd cost a lot less than the same size Klisch home speaker horn. And then why not just get active pro spreakers and kill two birds with one stone? I saw I guy on Audiogon that was selling his QSC powered speakers and said they were pretty good sounding in the home.
  7. How about one of the pro amp like a Mackie or QSC? I also heard somewhere the Carver Pro amps sound good, they use the tri-path chip or whatever ir is.
  8. Are the Chorus I's just as good? I also head the Forte's have excellent midrange.
  9. I've never tried a subwoofer, although I did try adding the KG4's with the Heresy's. All it did was add a bunch of bass.
  10. I've never tried a subwoofer, although I did try adding the KG4's with the Heresy's. All it did was add a bunch of bass.
  11. I actually did that and it was the same as raising but not as loud. When I try to pull out the midrange it just sounds like it's trying to push something it doesn't have and sounds terrible. I guess I can try getting new caps for the Heresy's since it doesn't cost too much. I don't know it getting knew diaphrams for them would be worth the $120. I'm just assuming since guitar amps are tube (the good ones) then midrange will sound better with a tube integrated like a Scott 299. It just seems like there's too much treble and not enough mod coming out of the Heresy's. Maybe it is the caps since they're from 1982.
  12. As a guitar player I love the chainsaw-like sound of an electric guitar but can't seem to get it to come out in my stereo. I had the KG4's with the HK730 and wasn't impressed at all with the midrange, then I got some Heresy's and it improved, but it still seems like the treble and bass is drowning out the vocals and guitar. I tried EQing it but raising the mids just made it sound like crap. To me rock isn't all treble and bass like most people seem to like. Sure they're important, but the real magic comes from the midrange. So I'm thinking maybe it's the amp, I'm on the lookout for a Scott tube amp righ now. Gotta take my time on that though since I don't have much money. I thought horns were supposed to rule for midrange, but maybe not. I've never seen a guitar amp that used a horn.
  13. So it sounds like the HK and Naks are the best you can get for Kllipsch speakers at that price range, am I right? What about the $500 range (for ss)?
  14. Anything around the same price range? I guess before I judge the hk too harshly I should upgrade the caps in my Heresys and KG4s. Also I've got a questionable turntable setup which I have no idea how to upgrade since I grew up more in the cassette era.
  15. I've read here that these are great inexpensive amps that match well with the Heritage line. I got a HK 730 and it's pretty good but I was wondering if the Nak will be a noticable improvement? I'd probably get a TA-3A since the 4A is a bit out of my price range.
  16. They have the risers, nice finish although a bit scratched up which doesn't matter to me. Looked up the serial, they're 1982. Looking to get a Nakamichi stasis amp now, I heard that will be an improvement over the HK 730. I guess I've got the bug. One day when I'm rich I'll get the khorns and tubes.
  17. Thanks for the advice guys. I got the Heresy's and they work fine. Big difference from my KG4's, better highs but less bass. I've decided to pair the KG4's and the Heresy's since my HK 730 has 4 speaker outputs. Need to get a horn diaphram for one of the KG4's. Will definintely look into replacing the caps on all the speakers. Will need to learn how to solder first though.
  18. Thats interesting, I'd never heard of Mitsubishi amps before. Unfortunately out of my price range though. Someone has a GFA-535 for sale in the next town for $100. I could plug it into the preamp on my HK 730. Or maybe I should save my money and wait for a Nakamichi TA, the way people talk about them it sounds like they're better than the Adcom..
  19. After some research here the old Nakamichi TA-4 sounds like a winner. I'll have to be patient though for one to come up for sale at a good price. From what I read that line of 'stasis' amps are pretty good.
  20. Thanks for the manual. As it turns out it's the KG4 that's blown. I assumed it was the amp since the exact same sound was coming out of my marantz before the left channel blew in that one. Also, it seemed to be going into protection mode, so I just assumed.. now I've got to get some more speakers. Someone local is selling some early 80's Heresy's.
  21. Thats it? No early production models better sounding than older ones, no faulty crossover in 80's models or something weird like that?
  22. Found a matched pair locally for a good price and was thinking about getting them for my HK 730. They've been up for sale for awhile, so I was wondering if there's anything I should look for before buying them, something that may have dissuaded other potential buyers. They're supposed to be from the early 80's.
  23. Thanks for the advice. Could you recommend a good ss amp to go with my KG4's? I can only spend about $200 right now. I guess I need more than 30wpc since I blew the last two ss amps.
  24. I actually liked the distortion from the tube amp I had before when i turned it all the way up. It was so smooth that it just added more excitment to the punk rock instead of making you want to turn it down like a SS does. If I can get the best of both worlds, tubed-out highs with deep bass I'd be in heaven. It doesn't have to be extemely earth shattering bass though, movies aren't as important as music at all.. I just need to be kicked in the gut by the bass drum like the hk does. Will more sensitive speaker also give me deeper bass with the same wattage?
  25. Can you tell me what to look for? I assumed a fuse is either open or closed. I didn't know it could still play with a blown fuse.
