  1. What about a new tube amp? Are they as good as the old ones? Also, do you think good SS gear like Mcintosh or maybe Rotel can be as musical as tubes? I'm not really interested in accurate or analytical as much as it being 'pleasing'. That's interesting, I didn't know that. I do like to hear bass, it just makes the music sound better to my newbie ears.
  2. Hi Everyone! I've been excitedly reading the forums looking for an amp to use with my KG4's and think the Eico 81 would be a great choicet. I thought about McIntosh SS but I hear a lot more words like 'magic' when reading about the Eico. My question is, will it ruin it if I leave it on all the time and will it run up my electricity bill? I have an old Marantz that I leave on all the time right now. Also, I watch a lot of movies, will that ruin it? I plan on getting better Klipsch speakers in the future but I can't afford it yet. I also plan on playing computer FLAC files as my music source. Any recommendation on the best way to do that? -mike
  3. Thats funny you said that, I just found out about a program called 'Izotope' that does exactly what I've been asking about. And I thought I was the only one who liked tube distortion in my music! Now I'm thinking I'll just run winamp through some decent ss amp into my KG4s. At least until I can afford the KLF30s and a sub.
  4. None at the moment. But I could probably get away with spending $1k max in the near future. Right now all I've I've got some old KG4's with no amp so I'm listening to music with winamp on my computer speakers.
  5. Thats one way to get THD, except it comes from your brain!
  6. That sounds like an interesting idea. Does turning up the preamp make the music distort? Also I'm wondering, Is there such a thing as speaker distortion with stereos? Speaker distortion is part of good tone for guitarists.
  7. hell yeah! i think it tricks your brain into thinking your listening to it at earbleed levels. ]');" title="Big Smile - []"> I think I just showed my age right there!
  8. I'd love to have that but I can't be too loud unfortunately.
  9. Hey thanks for the quick reply! Just curious, you don't you think a tube amp would be better? I guess I think that because I play guitar on an old tube amp and to get distortion I just turn it high. But what you're saying is interesting, I've heard of a guy that used ss distortion from a Roland JC-120 as the preamp and outputting that through a big tube power amp. It makes a wicked chainsaw-like sound.
  10. I don't know if that's what it's called, but I think it sounds good when rock music sounds a little distorted like when the volume is up too high. I know I'm weird. My question is what kind of amp/speakers should I try to produce that effect? My idea is maybe a low power tube amp, but I'd like to get some 'kick you in the gut' punch too. For my type of music I think midrange is very important. (Punk/metal/rock) I heard the KLF-30s which sounded really dynamic, but I don't which amp would be good to pair with it. Thanks!!
