  1. I have a problem with the K55V squaker in one of my cornwalls 1's. It doesn't seem to put out anywhere near as loudly as the other, but it is working somewhat so I know the voice coil isn't open. Is the diaphram bad perhaps?? Can someone who has fried one in the past advise? Can you get just the diaphrams and if so, does anyone have a source. I have already eliminated the crossover as the source of the problem. Thanks for your help. Jake
  2. Last weekend I completed a long awaited upgrade to my 1979 Cornwall 1's. I had wanted to upgrade the crossovers for quite awhile as I suspected a problem with one. I had lost 2 tweeters over the years in the one speaker and it didn't sound as crisp and loud as the other. Anyway I was excited when Al K. offered the Cornwall upgrade and decided to construct a pair. All ordered items came very quickly ( 1 week ). I also elected to use 1% tolerance North 5.6 ohm wirewound resistors in the crossovers as well as Teflon insulated silver wire, 14gauge, to rework all internal cabinet wiring to the squaker/ tweeter. I used 10 gauge input wire and to the woofer. I'm very please to report the results are spectacular. Al should be awarded some type of design award! These crossovers bring these masterpiece speakers to a whole new level. The quickness of their response is unreal. The high end detail is amazing. The do sound totally different than the originals though so be aware. The first song I played, my heart sank as the squawker sounded all destorted. I believe it takes a while to bias all the Harmony/ Hovland caps but I soon came to realize the recording sucked. If you thought the Cornwalls were unforgiving before on poorly recorded music, with Al's crossovers its unlistenable. The ALK crossovers bring the Cornwalls to another league all together. I can tell you that one would have to spend at least $3,000 - $4,000 on speakers to get anywhere near my 22 year old Cornwalls with Al's units installed. It's amazing what the drivers in these old brutes are really capable of. Needless to say I can go on and on. Overall they are outstanding and highly recommended. I must warn you though, if one is not skilled at electronics and soldering get them from AL. These are more difficult to build correctly than the drawing might indicate. I have an extensive background in the field as well as all the tools to do the job right. If you don't have either, don't attempt to go it alone or you might have a nice pair of bookends. Finally, the completed units are absolutely beautiful with the Solen coils. They are almost too nice to hide in the cabinet! Thanks again Al for a wonderful job! Ken DeGroff
  3. Does anyone else think it strange that the tweeters / squakers are mounted on the inside wall on the Cornwall 1's? It seems to me that firing the tweeter through the 3/4 inch cutout would restrict horizontal deflection of the sound. Wouldn't it be an improvement to mount the tweeter with the flange on the outside? Has anyone ever done this and would were the results? Thanks.
  4. One of the tweeters in my 1979 Cornwalls has been replaced. I changed it approx. 1987. I am interested in the ALK crossovers but I'm not sure if the current tweeter is compatable as there are no Klipsch markings on the back of it. It looks the same (square) as the other tweeter. Does the K79 appear different than the K77?? If I recall, I got it from EV and it's a t-35. Also has anyone ever just rebuilt the current B3 crossover using the Solen litz coils and better caps??I was thinking of that with the additional P-trap. Thoughts Thanks
  5. I have a pair of 1979 Cornwalls that have played loud for 21 years. A friend of mine just bought a pair of RF-3s. I thought the mid/highs sounded better than my old Cornwalls and was wondering if mine are just tired or is the Tractrix horn better? I read somewhere about upgrading the Cornwalls with pro tractrix type horns. Does anyone have and info on what Pro horn I would use? I will never sell my Cornwalls and I'm confident I can blow the RF-3's away with some rework. The bass on the Cornys is still better. After all, the Hertiage speakers are immortal. I also have considerable better front end equipment than I heard the rfs on. Thanks
