  1. Gentlemen (and ladies if any of you are): Thanks very much for the good info. I think I will go with fini and try the partial laquer (after concerted effort to remove oil) and see how it goes. My question now is, once re-laquered, how soon do I oil with safety? I will report back as things progress. Thanks again to all, Rich
  2. Fini, you are OK!!! By the way, I think its Heresys. So if I go to Lowes or Home Depot they would say "sure, we got Deft. Right over here. Which do you want, the gloss, the matte or the semi". And I will say "the semi, since the current finish is somewhat glossy but it is very easy to see and feel the oak grain pattern on the uneven surface." And he/she will say " Thats right, some guy named Fini was here the other day and had the same problem". So what do you think, Fini, the semi??? Thanks again, Rich
  3. Thanks Chris. I wondered about the possibility of that (your analysis) right after I posted the request for help so I applied some oil to a portion of the effected area this morning. I will wait a while to evaluate the results. I did only a portion in case I do have to refinish it and new oil would effect the wood's ability to hold the poly, or whatever new finish I would use. In the meantime, the serial #s are 102U826/7 and the label says HOL(I think-- the handwriting of the "L" is hard to be sure about. Maybe you would know what else it might be if you are familiar with Klipsch's coding). The little I know about the coding would suggest that if it is "L", that would mean "laquer" By the way, I thank you for your first suggestion of the pouring of drinks. Problem is, I've been drowning my sorrows with drink ever since I discovered the damage!! 3 more would have made little difference. But it looks like "Fini" felt OK with your suggestion, even though its not his anguish! Thanks again, Rich
  4. Horror of all horrors!! Sin of all sins!!!(well, almost). I have had the bad fortune of damaging the finish on my '80s Heresys. I had them sitting horizontally on stands that had a "padding" on them to prevent scratching. I can't be for sure, but I think the lemon oil I used to treat the Heresys must have effected the pads, and they stuck to the cabinet. Maybe the adhesive on the pads leaked through and got to the cabinet!! The stands stuck to the cabinets!!! After I got them loose and cleaned whatever that stuff was off of the cabinets it appears that the varnish is gone. The stands were square tubular things and there is a u-shaped (1" wide) varnish free area on each cabinet. My question is, what to do now. My first thought was to "touch up" the problem area, but then I figure the finish is not urathane, that not being used in the '80s, and that whatever it is isn't available any more. You can probably tell I'm not too much of a cabinet finisher. So, what to do???? Do I have to refinish the whole cabinet? If so, I guess I have to remove the old. Is there a finish of choice if I do this. HELP!! Any ideas will be appreciated.
  5. Drew et. al.-- I haven't posted for a while because of several things that have kept me away from the speaker mods and the computer. But hopefully in the near future I will be getting the sand bases completed and the mortite on the horns. Rich
  6. Drew-- Thanks for posting these. As per our emails, I am enjoying my newly purchased Fortes, but am eager to do the mods and hear the differences. In fact, I am on my out the door to Home Depot right now to get the sand filled bases material. I think I will do the mods 1 at a time to see the difference that each adds. I know this leads to some repeated taking apart, but it will be worth it to hear the gains from each mod. I will check out Al's material on the x-overs. He lives close enough for me to visit and he and I have chatted by email re my Heresys. Thanks again for the posts. Regards, Rich
